Abstract

The paper analyzes current problems in the handling of personal data in the media and the attempt of the Bulgarian legislation to synchronize the requirements under Regulation (EU) 2016/679 for the handling of personal data with the constitutional framework of the communication rights for freedom of expression and information, provided in Art. 39, 40 and 41, which also affect the freedom of media. Emphasis is placed on the latest amendment to the Bulgarian Personal Data Protection Act of 2019, which, among others, covers the requirements for the processing of personal data in journalistic content. In this regard, in relation to the Bulgarian media environment, several particularly broad problem areas which await their solution are commented on.
