Abstract

Tibetan New Year is the most important traditional festival in Tibet. It is of considerable interest for studying the processes of transformation and preservation of traditions taking place during the celebration of the Tibetan New Year at the present time. This article presents the results of participant observation conducted during the celebration of the Tibetan New Year festival in the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa city, in the winter of 2023. As part of the writing of the article, more than 20 sources, previously unavailable to the Russian scientific community, were analyzed and introduced into the scientific turnover. It is deemed that over the course of history, the traditional Tibetan New Year has transformed from a mere holiday into a comprehensive festival, while preserving the ancient customs of holding it. Conclusion dwells upon the fact that the broadcasting of Tibet's cultural heritage that takes place during the New Year events also has socio-economic significance.
