Abstract

The article analyses perception of Yemelyan Pugachev’s rebellion among the population of Tyumen uyezd by the material of the documents of Tyumen Voivode’s Chancery. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the author for the first time shows how information campaign against the rebels influenced the overall situation in Tyumen uyezd. The following conclusions are justified: outside the rebellion area, Pugachev’s uprising was defined as “gangsterism”, a generic term used to describe the Time of Troubles. In public consciousness, the rebellion was perceived as an anomaly, a danger to social stability.
