Abstract

The paper deals with the specifics of interlanguage lacunae that appear during the translation of A. P. Chekhov’s works into Chinese by Chinese translators. In particular, the features of different types of speech lacunae are examined, the appearance of which is due to the absence or modification of concepts, images, phenomena that are characteristic of the conceptual sphere of Russian speakers in the conceptual sphere of Chinese speakers. The study aims to identify the main types of lacuna vocabulary that appears when translating works of fiction from Russian into Chinese. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in introducing the works of Chinese translators into scientific use, in identifying and classifying the types of lacunarity on the basis of these works. As a result of the study, the following types of interlanguage lacunae that emerge during the translation of Chekhov’s works into Chinese by modern Chinese translators have been identified: motivated/unmotivated lacunae; stylistic lacunae; full/partial/compensated speech lacunae (including uncompensated or vacant); grammatical lacunae; emotive (connotative/associative) lacunae; mixed lacunae. The appearance of each type of lacunae is explained by the absence or modification of concepts, images peculiar to the Russian language in the conceptual sphere of Chinese speakers.
