Abstract

The aim of the study is to clarify the nature of the relationship between the notions “literal meaning”, “transposed meaning”, “real meaning”, “figurative basis”, “internal form” of a language unit, “linguistic worldview” thereby eliminating the existing inconsistencies in their interpretations. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the work highlights the functional aspect of the internal form of language units, namely the mechanism of motivating meanings with the help of the internal form. The obtained results have shown that the internal form of a language unit is not its literal meaning as such, but the relationship between its literal and real meanings which underlies the semantic motivation of its real meaning. The study has been conducted by the material of the English and Russian languages.
