Abstract

The paper aims to identify the mechanisms to produce puns in an English newspaper text. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it considers such a variant of linguistic game as pun by the example of media texts devoted to Brexit for the first time. As a result, it has been revealed that antonymic, allusive and homonymic puns occur in the analyzed texts. Pragmatic potential of pun as a stylistic figure for creating expressiveness, evaluating political situation and the leader’s actions has been shown. Pun contributes to achieving comical and dramatic effect, ironic attitude towards the situation described, as well as attracting the addressee’s attention, controlling their emotions and feelings.
