Abstract

The article discusses the judgments of M. O. Menshikov and V. V. Rozanov about the personality and creativity of N. V. Gogol. The literary views of the two leading publicists of Russia of the beginning of the XX century, who worked in the newspaper ‘Novoye Vremya’, are analysed. Similarities and differences in their assessments of the classic writer’s creative heritage are revealed. The authors ascertain that the general approaches of Rozanov and Menshikov to Gogol’s works are based on K. Leontiev’s conception. Rozanov develops Leontiev’s thoughts in his own way, mystifying and demonizing the writer. Menshikov, partially following Leontiev, sees a dramatically split figure in Gogol.
