Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study to examine the effectiveness of a group counseling program for core competency enhancement of college students majoring in counseling psychology regarding interpersonal competence and empathic competence. And also this study verified to compare the effects of non-contact and contact program implementing methods.
 Methods For this purpose, 32 undergraduate students were participated the program group and 10 students were assigned to a control group, and the group counseling program for core competency enhancement conducted contact and non-contact for 7 weeks. The empathic competence and interpersonal competence scale were used as measurement tools, and the survey was conducted at pre-test. post-test, and 1-month follow-up test. For the analysis, data from 14 people in the program participation group and 8 people in the control group who responded to all three surveys were used.
 Results The results indicated that the group that participated in the counseling program experienced significant increases in each of the scales, as compared to the control group. The difference according the contact and non-contact participation methods was not significant. Finally, as a result of analyzing the experience report data, ‘self-understanding’, ‘interpersonal competence’, and ‘counseling competency’ were derived.
 Conclusions The effectiveness of a group counseling program for core competency enhancement of college students majoring in counseling psychology regarding interpersonal competence and empathic competence was verified.
