Abstract
The aim of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the development of scientific ideas about the history of Orthodox monasteries and monasticism in the city of Kyiv in the historiography of the pre-Soviet period. The works that were the result of many years of research of their authors should be taken as the basis for the study. Scientific novelty. The historiography of the works on monasteries of the city of Kyiv, which were printed during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, was consistently formed, and their grouping and classification was carried out. It was emphasized that a detailed review of the texts of these scientific studies and popular literature can lead to the conclusion that almost all of them have not only historiographical, but also sourceological significance. Conclusions. The analysis of the historiography of monasteries of the city of Kyiv in the pre-Soviet period was carried out, the main groups of sources were determined and their classification justified. All research on the defined scientific problem of the 19th and early 20th centuries was divided into three groups: general works that have the character of reference literature, in which all monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church are briefly described, including those that belonged to the Kyiv diocese; general works, the authors of which were engaged in the study of certain aspects of monastic life; regional comprehensive studies on the history of individual monasteries of the Kyiv diocese. The works of the pre-Soviet period of a general nature on the history of Orthodox monasteries, despite their inconsistency and differences, have the following characteristic features: almost all of them belong to historians of the official-church direction; they are distinguished by a certain degree of descriptiveness and idealization of the activity of the Russian Orthodox Church; their authors collected a significant amount of factual material. These studies have significant factual material, including the history of Orthodox monasteries in the city of Kyiv during the synodal period, they present the problems of periodization, the place of monasteries in the life of society, analysis of sources and research methods. Regional studies are mainly devoted to the great Kyiv monasteries and their archives, the socio-political and economic activity of the monasteries.
