Abstract

John Knox, a 16th-century man, was a reformer who institutionalized the Reformation of Scotland. Knox left a number of sermons, letters, and important works, including The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women, published in 1558, which caused many objections. This article was intended to neutralize the rule of Mary Tudor, Queen of England, but let Knox have gained notoriety as a misogynist with the development of a generalization of misogyny and opposition to women's rule. In response, this paper aims to explore the background of Knox's writing of The First Blast and introduce its details, so as to reveal that the core of the book is not "misogyny" but opposition to idolatrous women "rulers". Also, this paper introduces the historical Knox, who recognized female rulers and respected women, by exploring Knox's letters to female rulers and women around him besides The First Blast.
