Abstract

The study aims to describe ways of working with opening sentences of a text in preparation for writing a summary in the Russian language in the 9th form. Special attention is paid not only to elaborating on the communicative functions of opening sentences and giving their classification, but also to substantiating a system of exercises with a progressive complication of tasks based on the principle of graduality proposed by E. V. Arkhipova. Scientific novelty lies in developing an algorithm for the systematic learning of the communicative functions of opening sentences, which contributes to their conscious use when writing summaries in Russian. Such work will pursue not only a narrow goal, i.e. forming graduates’ skills of creating opening sentences taking into account communicative intention, but also a broader one, i.e. mastering the highest level of language ability, which is speech proficiency. As a result, the researcher has developed a system of exercises that promotes the effective learning of the communicative functions of opening sentences and has proposed an algorithm that can be used when writing a summary in Russian.
