Abstract

The study examines the fundamental aspects of the teaching of St. Justin (Popović) on the role of knowledge of God in the life of a man and the development of peoples, the solution of the social problems of Western civilization in terms of St. Sabbas’ school of thought and Orthodox philosophy of truth. In his works, Archimandrite Justin (Popović) takes a completely different theoretical view on the assessment of the following basic concepts of European civilization: progress, society, personal development. His criticism of European civilization relies not only on the God-man concept but also the opinions of the leading Russian wri-ters and thinkers such as F.M. Dostoevsky, N.V. Gogol, and A.I. Herzen and the famous foreign cultural scientist O. Spengler. The concepts of society, progress, and enlightenment are not opposed to Orthodoxy, but they have not been truly developed due to the lack of knowledge of God’s position in the European theory because of the de-Christianization of European thinking. The views of St. Justin (Popović) on the problems of modern society are introduced in modern Russian humanities.
