Abstract

This article describes the characteristics of morphological, biological and economically valuable signs and advantages of milk thistle varieties bred in the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Russian Research and Design Institute of Sorghum and Corn", included in the state register of breeding achievements of the Russian Federation. Today, the issues of world medical practice are relevant and it is rational to use herbal preparations for treatment and prevention. In this aspect, it is realistic and correct to use valuable medicinal plants growing in the Russian Federation. There are a large number of agricultural plants with medicinal properties, a plant – milk thistle, which is a promising medicinal plant and grows massively in the conditions of the Middle and Lower Volga region, got into our field of view. There is not enough information in the field of breeding and seed production of milk thistle, therefore this plant is promising and requires research. The purpose of this work is to study the varieties of milk thistle and the prospects for creating new varieties of breeding of the Rossorgo Institute. The creation of new varieties for the specific conditions of the Lower Volga region is an important task in the region. The variety, as a dynamic and biological system, belongs to one of the main places in solving the problem of increasing crop yields and improving product quality. The staff of the Institute is aimed at concentrating efforts and using the accumulated materials. The main goal is to create highly productive varieties for various soil and climatic regions of the Russian Federation
