Abstract

Currently, there are many methods, approaches and technologies for assessing the relevance and potential of scientific and technical areas. This is an important task for the development of science and innovation, as well as for defining priorities and strategies for research funding. This paper provides a review of existing methods, approaches and technologies, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Particular attention is paid to methods based on the analysis of scientific publications, patents, citations, social networks and expert assessments. Promising directions for further development and improvement of methods for assessing the relevance and potential of scientific and technical areas are also considered. The basic requirements for automated research management systems are also specified and their efficiency and advantages are analyzed.
