Abstract

Medium-capacity (6–20kV) overhead power lines made of aerial bundled cables (ABC) were inspected to identify deaths of birds of prey in western Kazakhstan in summer 2017 (Aktobe Province) and autumn2019 (Mangystau Province). The results show that the use of ABC in itself does not completely prevent deaths of birds. Birds die from electrocution caused by contact with lightning overvoltage protectors. The level of hazard to the birds depends on the design of such protectors. The conclusion was made that the safety of birds should be ensured when designing overhead power lines, including ABC lines. It is recommended to use primarily the lightning overvoltage protectors that ensure safety of birds.
