Abstract

The article analyses the Buryat adjectives with the meaning of high temperature халуун (“hot, ardent, sultry”) and дулаан/бүлеэн (“warm”) in comparison with their Russian equivalents. The findings indicate that semantics of the word халуун includes the meanings of all the three words, and insignificant differences affect the sphere of figurative usage. The adjectives дулаан and бүлеэн differ cardinally in their compatibility: дулаан refers to solid and gaseous objects, and бүлеэн - to liquid ones, with a few exceptions. The adjective бүлеэн has no figurative meaning, which indicates its high-level pragmatic specialization.
