Abstract

The article deals with the creative history of the novel “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” by L. N. Tolstoy, shows the significant changes made by the writer during the work. The author of the article analyzes the most important plot nuances and emphasizes semantic points that were present in the drafts, identifies the reasons why they were not included in the final text. Special attention is paid to the motive of lies, the time of the protagonist's insight and the impact of his death on others. It is proved that Tolstoy deliberately did not allow deteriorated descriptions of the character and his family until the final illness of Ivan Ilyich, exposing the irreparable pretense of those around him. In addition to the point of view of Ivan Ilyich, whose consciousness in the story is one of the key points in presenting the surrounding picture of the world and excludes God, there is a people’s view of the world in the work, which puts forward the idea of selfless help.
