Abstract

The recent “emotional turn” offers new research perspectives in literary studies. Emotions are not only a personal phenomenon, but also a product of culture. Therefore, it is important to reconstruct their evolution in different contexts, such as in the family environment. To do this, ego-documents are rich sources for investigating the emotional world of the family in the past. The aim of this article is to analyse the feelings related to family relationships in the autobiographical work Повесть о рождении моем, происхождении и всей жизни by I. M. Dolgorukov (1764–1823), who is an interesting figure of the Eighteenth-century Russian cultural scene. In particular, this study pays attention to the aims of I. M. Dolgorukov in describing his emotions. Moreover, it emphasizes how the author is influenced by cultural context in the way he talks about his own feelings in his autobiography.
