Abstract

The article discusses the intertextual links of Batiushkov’s verse-tale "The Wanderer and the Home-Lover". As formulated in Batiushkov’s letters, the tale’s central idea is closely connected with French maxims, and especially poetic punchlines. The philosophical quest of the protagonist, which forms the basis of the plot, culminates in him acquiring of Pyrrhon’s skeptical wisdom. The study reveals multiple borrowings from French poetry and treatises on classical Antiquity.
