Abstract

The starting point of this article is the observation that Russian and non-Russian historians of literature assign Andrei Platonov a very special place in Russian culture. This place does not coincide with any of the known developments or periods in this field. Considering works of art, which “belong” to one development or period, not as texts, which imply closed lists of formal and/or semantic features, but as mere phenomena, which show family-similarities in the sense of Wittgenstein, this article reconstructs correspondences of Platonovʼs writing not only with Russian realism, modernism, avant-gardism and socialist realism but also with non-Russian developments as international absurdism and Dutch and German “Neue Sachlichkeit” (“New Objectivity”). The value of Platonovʼs oeuvre can be related to the fact that in an inspiring dialogue it communicated with works of all these developments and periods.
