Abstract

The article depicts the interrelation between verbal and visual codes in a political metaphor from the perspective of linguosemiotics and cognitive linguistics exemplified by the integration of image and word in the representation of the meanings of political reality. The study is based on the mono- and polymodal texts of political caricatures. The research aims to describe metaphorical models of national leaders of two linguistic cultures – Great Britain (B. Johnson) and the USA (D. Trump). The schemes of interaction between verbal and nonverbal codes represented by substitution, comparison and hybridization, as well as their role in the formation of a metaphorical image of politician are revealed. The symbolic nature of polymodal texts of political caricatures is analyzed from the perspective of meaning formation by the interpretive consciousness, and the suggestive potential of political texts.
