Abstract

The move to smart grids stimulates development of new technology for power transmission and distribution. Solid-state transformers as an alternative to conventional transformers look promising for AC and DC integration in adaptive smart grids. This paper reviews basic principles of building smart grids based on solid-state transformers with a special emphasis on renewable energy sources integrated into power distribution grids.
