Abstract

The paper aims to identify the factors that determined polemical nature of du Bellay’s manifesto “La Défense et Illustration de la Langue Française” (“The Defence and Illustration of the French Language”). For this purpose, the researcher compares this work with the previously published “Art Poetique Francois” (“Poetic Art”) by Thomas Sébillet. Scientific originality of the research involves a comprehensive-comparative analysis of the two theoretical works, which makes it possible to reveal influence of Sébillet’s theoretical provisions on the “Pléiade” literary movement. The research findings are as follows: the author shows that du Bellay’s decisive denial of the medieval tradition and rigidity of his language are mostly explained by his aspiration to separate himself from Sébillet and to proclaim a cardinally different poetical conception.
