Abstract

The methods of actualization of I. Slavinska’s own experience in the book «My spare lives» (Lviv, 2019) are investigated, the features of presentation of facts, situations and memories in the context of influence on reader are analyzed in the current article. The relevance of this research work is due to the fact that I. Slavinska's debut book has not yet been the subject of a thorough analysis which it needs primarily at the level of ways to deal with socially significant topics and problems, presentation of life experience and composing of material. The author choosing a meditative-artistic and philosophical tone covers important issues in accordance with the tasks of journalism. I. Slavinska is a peculiar kind of chronicler whose activity is directed to the inner sphere, impressions, emotions and memories. Her book is a model of journalism that performs a therapeutic function, because it focuses on self-analysis, search and understanding of traumatic situations, primarily research of own history. The author engages the reader in the process of recollection through vivid metaphors, expressive, laconic details, specific composition of the material. Reproducing memories, raising acute topical issues the essay writer constructs a metaphorical reality, universal and concrete at the same time, and it can be considered as a common background for the exchange of senses, a form for filling special content and experience of each recipient. It is determined that the author shifts the emphasis from the problem itself to the actual course of this problem, combines typical and specific aspects, avoids visible logical or compositional schemes of material’s presentation. The journalist shares her thoughts about the Holodomor and the Holocaust, the devaluation of human rights, the importance of the Ukrainian language, the imperfection of the education system, sexism and other current issues. Researcher reveled function of the memory’s image which combines all the stories into a holistic picture and underlines the key metaphor of «spare lives» given in the title. The prospects for further analysis of the book of a well-known media figure in particular the study of the image system, compositional and linguistic features are outlined in the article.
