Abstract

The paper aims to reveal techniques to translate the Italian dialectal vocabulary into English and Russian. The study is based on an analysis of the English and Russian translations of fragments of the Italian feature film “Gomorrah” and the first episode of the first season of the TV series of the same name. The article emphasizes importance of transferring specificity of movie personages’ speech into target languages characterized by the lack of dialect forms. Scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that the author for the first time, by the material of the Italian feature film and TV series, identifies translation techniques to transfer the sociolinguistic component of the Italian dialectal vocabulary into English and Russian. The conducted analysis allows concluding that dialectal lexical units are often translated by means of explanatory translation. This tendency is equally observed in the English subtitled version and in the Russian dubbed version of the movie.
