Abstract

Examined in this article is the work of young Yu Jino, which until now have only been studied by scholars in the fields of history and literature separately. Here his works are approached from a more comprehensive angle, with the aim of determining his identity as a Socialist. As a leader of the Gyeongseong Imperial University-based Socialist intellectuals, Yu Jino used various pen names like Jin’o(陣伍), Yi Ji-hwi(李之輝) and Hyeonmin(玄民) while writing on various subjects across many areas, such as academic Marxist theories, Journalist approaches toward the history of Social movements, and Socialist literature.BR Then in the mid-1930s, as the prospect for Ideological movements continued to shrink due to unfolding political incidents including the Manchurian war, Yu Jino converted, apparently abandoning ‘ideology’ in favor of ‘literature’ and all its qualities. His conversion coincided with his abandoning of other pen names except that of Hyeonmin. Earlier he used that pseudonym as a symbol of pursuing both ideology and literature, but later he used it as a pen name symbolizing his departure from Socialism and his new pursuit of progressive but at the same time not-so-Socialist literary aspirations.BR But if we carefully examine all his engagements in writing, it becomes clear that he was not just a companion author that mildly agreed with Socialism from a distance. He was a genuine Socialist, only of a different type. Young Yu Jino was a clear example that there were more than one way to pursue Socialism in colonized Joseon.
