Abstract

This article analyzes the factors influencing the emergence of phraseological units with a color component. Examples of Englishes from countries with different language situations are used: countries where English is the first and main language, as a native language (ENL) (the Inner Circle, with Australia as an example); where English is a second language (ESL) (the Outer Circle, with Singapore as an example); where English is studied as a foreign language (EFL) (the Expanding Circle, with China as an example). Phraseological units are analyzed from the viewpoint of the applicability of B. Berlin and P. Kay’s theory, as well as influence of conceptual, sociocultural and historical factors on the process of phraseological unit formation. Based on the analysis, it can be assumed that the formation of phraseological units with a color component in the Australian and Chinese varieties of English was mostly influenced by a sociocultural and historical factors, while Singaporean phraseology is based on the conceptual image meaning. B. Berlin and P. Kay’s theory is applicable only to Australian variety of English.
