Abstract

The paper publishes a most important work by Bishop Jacob (Vecherkov) of Saratov, a notable church official of the second quarter of the 19th century and initiator of large-scale missionary projects who exerted significant ideological influence on quite a number of his contemporaries. The text is an essay dealing with mass local religious movements and state policies in this field during the modern history that are virtually unknown to present-day science. The message is a precious monument of social thought of the Nicholas I era, of particular interest being the priest’s assessment of consequences of the policy of religious tolerance pursued during Russia’s ‘enlightened absolutism’.
