Abstract

Aerosols containing microorganisms, viruses and elevated concentrations of pollutants released from wastewater into the atmosphere pose a serious threat to human health and safety. The purpose of this review is to detail the processes of generation, transmission and diffusion of aerosols from wastewater treatment facilities. In addition, the main factors affecting aerosol transmission and the corresponding prevention strategies for combating airborne and inhaled bioaerosols are discussed.
