Abstract

The article introduces the complete text of A. А. Fet’s 1891 response to the circular letter from the Petersburg editor and publisher M. M. Lederle, who was collecting data for his book "Russian People on the Best Books for Reading" (1895). Through the analysis of the letter and of the general social situation of the time, the author suggests that Fet was opposed to Lederle’s project, while the poet’s letter should be regarded as one of his latest public statements.
