Abstract

Mining of thick flat-lying coal seams is associated with a huge number of problems, the bulk of which is attributable to technical limitations in the existing and currently available for use mining methods. All these problems can be resolved with the fully mechanized longwall face mining of thick flat-flying coal seams consequently layer by layer down to the seam floor. Validation of these proprietary mining methods required a complete research of crashing and caving behavior of the undercut mass. The research process was performed on models built with the equivalent materials in a laboratory environment. The results obtained from the research studies made it possible to introduce these new methods into the industry.
