Abstract

One of the measures for the conservation of water biological resources is the conduct of environmental monitoring. Presentation and analysis of the results of environmental monitoring of the water ecosystem in the lower reaches of the Northern Dvina River and the practical use of the data is the aim of the research. The researchers have identified that the average value of the biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton during the freeze-up period is almost 5 times lower than in the summer period. The production coefficient of conversion of the biomass of water food organisms into their products in the climatic conditions of the Arctic is zero for half a year. This is due to the presence of ice cover, reduced daylight hours and low water temperatures. Data from scientific publications, which show the results of research only for the growing season, cannot be used to assess harm. This leads to an incorrect assessment of the negative impact and increases the costs of enterprises. Environmental monitoring is a source of representative data about the actual magnitude of the impact on the aquatic ecosystem. The costs of economic entities for environmental monitoring are significantly lower than the cost of compensation for damage to aquatic biological resources based on incorrect data. The availability of data on the background state of the aquatic ecosystem will make it possible to make a correct assessment of the negative impact on the components of the environment in the event of various kinds of man-made accidents.
