Abstract
The purpose of the study is to trace the influence of stories about the spontaneous renewal of icons found in the folk tradition of Belarusians in the XX-early XXI centuries on the formation and dissemination of narratives about miracles. The publication examines the views of various authors on the place of the concept of miracle in Belarusian folk culture and its evolution under the influence of various contextual factors, attempts to typologize stories about the spontaneous renewal of icons and search for their place in the most common structures of stories about miracles. The article also shows the attitude of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches to the renewal of icons in the territories where stories about them were most common. The scientific novelty lies in the study of the selected material, as well as the results of interviews with informants from the expeditions undertaken by the author, which are necessary for the analysis. As a result, it was found that the stories about the renewal of icons became a kind of mediator between the" book " miracles and the miracles of the new time.
