Abstract

This study aims to compare two major novels, As I Lay Dying and The Sound and the Fury, written by William Faulkner focusing on intratextual and intertextual meanings of balance and thematic points of circle and fate in and between both novels. Although The Sound and Fury delineates tragic fall of the Compsons having heritage of the southern aristocracy while As I Lay Dying tells a comic story of the Bundrens journeying through various travails to bury her dying mother, Addie, both novels share the theme of balance and the symbol of circle in a variety of ways. In As I Lay Dying, Darl, standing for cognitive and pensive subject and its limit sustains balance with Jewel, a man of action and body. Anse and Cash also are located at opposing positions though they share balance in their geometric thoughts and actions. In The Sound and the Fury, Benjy and Quentin share the scheme of perception and maintain thematic balance. Then, the paper explores how Addie and Caddy/Dilsey play roles of core of circles of fate and balance in both novels.
