Abstract

The article for the first time addresses the problem of discrepancy of speech portraits of the main characters of Vladimir Menshov’s “Moscow Does not Believe in Tears” in the original version and in the English dubbed version of the movie. The conducted linguistic research shows that the speech portraits of Katerina and Gosha have undergone essential transformations due to the fact that their remarks acquire a different stylistic colouring or even a different meaning. It causes distortion of the characters’ images and leads to a different perception of the movie by the English-speaking viewers in comparison with the Russian-speaking ones.
