Abstract

Wanghoedo (Envoys Paying Tribute to the Court) is an illustration of envoys from various countries paying tribute to an emperor originated from an anecdotes of legendary Chinese emperors receiving foreign envoys. It is known to have first painted at the request of An Sa-Go under the auspices of Emperor Taejong of Tang. In China, Wanghoedo was continuously painted from Ming to Qing Dynasty. In Joseon, Wanghoedo was established as one of subjects for the royal folding screens during the era of King Jeongjo and Sunjo and had developed into various forms.
