Abstract
The aim of the research is to study the persuasive potential of the linguistic means of expressing evaluation in the German-language mass media discourse by the material of the discussion on the issue of awarding the Nobel Prize in Literature 2019 to the Austrian writer Peter Handke. The scientific novelty of the research lies in studying the positive and/or negative persuasive potential of the linguistic means of evaluation in the media discourse dedicated to a socially resonant cultural event. As a result of the analysis, it has been revealed that the authors of the texts often use various tropes and figures of speech as persuasive linguistic means depicting the fact of awarding the Nobel Prize to Handke either in a positive or negative subjective-modal way.
