A better representation of volatile organic compound chemistry in WRF-Chem and its impact on ozone over Los Angeles

Abstract. The declining trend in vehicle emissions has underscored the growing significance of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from volatile chemical products (VCPs). However, accurately representing VOC chemistry in simplified chemical mechanisms remains challenging due to its chemical complexity including speciation and reactivity. Previous studies have predominantly focused on VOCs from fossil fuel sources, leading to an underrepresentation of VOC chemistry from VCP sources. We developed an integrated chemical mechanism, RACM2B-VCP, that is compatible with WRF-Chem and is aimed at enhancing the representation of VOC chemistry, particularly from VCP sources, within the present urban environment. Evaluation against the Air Quality System (AQS) network data demonstrates that our model configured with RACM2B-VCP reproduces both the magnitude and spatial variability of O3 and PM2.5 in Los Angeles. Furthermore, evaluation against comprehensive measurements of O3 and PM2.5 precursors from the Reevaluating the Chemistry of Air Pollutants in California (RECAP-CA) airborne campaign and the Southwest Urban NOx and VOC Experiment (SUNVEx) ground site and mobile laboratory campaign confirm the model's accuracy in representing NOx and many VOCs and highlight remaining biases. Although there exists an underprediction in the total VOC reactivity of observed VOC species, our model with RACM2B-VCP exhibits good agreement for VOC markers emitted from different sectors, including biogenic, fossil fuel, and VCP sources. Through sensitivity analyses, we probe the contributions of VCP and fossil fuel emissions to total VOC reactivity and O3. Our results reveal that 52 % of the VOC reactivity and 35 % of the local enhancement of MDA8 O3 arise from anthropogenic VOC emissions in Los Angeles. Significantly, over 50 % of this anthropogenic fraction of either VOC reactivity or O3 is attributed to VCP emissions. The RACM2B-VCP mechanism created, described, and evaluated in this work is ideally suited for accurately representing ozone for the right reasons in the present urban environment where mobile, biogenic, and VCP VOCs are all important contributors to ozone formation.

Development of a UAV-borne sorbent tube sampler and its application on the vertical profile measurement of volatile organic compounds

Vertical detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential to expend our understanding of the distribution characteristics of VOCs and improve the predictive ability of existing air quality models. In this work, we report the development of a sorbent tube sampler based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. Vertical profile measurement of VOCs with a vertical resolution of 25 m was achieved. The sampler consists of five lightweight VOC sorbent tubes and a 5-way solenoid valve, making it available for collecting five atmospheric VOC samples in a single flight with a time response of less than 30 min. The sampler weighed ∼ 1.45 kg and had dimensions of 240 mm × 220 mm × 100 mm with small penetration loss (< 10%) under 4-liter sampling conditions (flow rate of 200 mL/min). Commercialized SUMMA canisters were used as experimental controls to investigate the possible loss of self-made sampler for target compounds in the same sampling process. Comparison experiment on the ground showed that the concentration differences for all VOC species were lower than 0.14 μg/m3, proving the good reliability for VOCs measurements using sorbent tube sampler. The UAV platform also incorporated online instruments for meteorological parameters and O3 measurement. The sampler was successfully applied to characterize the vertical profiles of VOCs up to 100 m in October 2023 in the Huaihe River Basin of China. The UAV platform and the sorbent tube sampler demonstrate good performance and will be a valuable and reliable tool for vertical VOCs measurement.

Changes in factor profiles deriving from photochemical losses of volatile organic compounds: Insight from daytime and nighttime positive matrix factorization analyses

Substantial effects of photochemical reaction losses of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on factor profiles can be investigated by comparing the differences between daytime and nighttime dispersion-normalized VOC data resolved profiles. Hourly speciated VOC data measured in Shijiazhuang, China from May to September 2021 were used to conduct study. The mean VOC concentration in the daytime and at nighttime were 32.8 and 36.0 ppbv, respectively. Alkanes and aromatics concentrations in the daytime (12.9 and 3.08 ppbv) were lower than nighttime (15.5 and 3.63 ppbv), whereas that of alkenes showed the opposite tendency. The concentration differences between daytime and nighttime for alkynes and halogenated hydrocarbons were uniformly small. The reactivities of the dominant species in factor profiles for gasoline emissions, natural gas and diesel vehicles, and liquefied petroleum gas were relatively low and their profiles were less affected by photochemical losses. Photochemical losses produced a substantial impact on the profiles of solvent use, petrochemical industry emissions, combustion sources, and biogenic emissions where the dominant species in these factor profiles had high reactivities. Although the profile of biogenic emissions was substantially affected by photochemical loss of isoprene, the low emissions at nighttime also had an important impact on its profile. Chemical losses of highly active VOC species substantially reduced their concentrations in apportioned factor profiles. This study results were consistent with the analytical results obtained through initial concentration estimation, suggesting that the initial concentration estimation could be the most effective currently available method for the source analyses of active VOCs although with uncertainty.

Vertical Features of Volatile Organic Compounds and Their Potential Photochemical Reactivities in Boundary Layer Revealed by In-Situ Observations and Satellite Retrieval

Based on in-situ vertical observations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the lower troposphere (0–1.0 km) in Nanjing, China, during the summer and autumn, we analyzed the VOCs vertical profiles, diurnal variation, and their impact factors in meteorology and photochemistry. The results showed that almost all the concentrations of VOC species decreased with height, similar to the profiles of primary air pollutants, as expected. However, we found the ratios of inactive species (e.g., acetylene) and secondary VOCs (e.g., ketones and aldehydes) in total VOCs (TVOCs) increased with height. Combined with satellite-retrieved data, we found the average HCHO tropospheric column concentrations were 2.0 times higher in the summer than in the autumn. While the average of tropospheric NO2 column concentrations was 3.0 times lower in the summer than in the autumn, the seasonal differences in the ratio of oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) to NO2 (e.g., HCHO/NO2) shown in TROPOMI satellite-retrieved data were consistent with in-situ observations (e.g., acetone/NO2). On average, during autumn daytime, the mixing layer (ML), stable boundary layer (SBL), and residual layer (RL) had OH loss rates (LOH) of 6.9, 6.3, and 5.5 s−1, respectively. The LOH of alkenes was the largest in the ML, while the LOH of aromatics was the largest in the SBL and RL. At autumn night, the NO3 loss rates (LNO3) in the SBL and RL were 2.0 × 10−2 and 1.6 × 10−2 s−1, respectively, and the LNO3 of aromatics was the largest in the SBL and RL. In the daytime of summer, the LOH of VOCs was ~40% lower than that in autumn in all layers, while there was no significant difference in LNO3 at night between the two seasons. This study provides data support and a theoretical basis for VOC composite pollution control in the Nanjing region.

Emission factors and source profiles of volatile organic compounds from the automobile manufacturing industry

Controlling volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the automobile manufacturing industry requires establishing VOCs emission factors (EFs) and source profiles refinedly. In this study, 41 samples involved 32 VOCs discharge links were collected from three factories. The EFs and VOCs source profiles were estimated by the material balance method and weighted average method, respectively. The ozone formation potential (OFP) of the 110 VOCs species were calculated by the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR). According to estimations, the ranges of EFs were 0.23–1.66 kg VOCs/SUV car and 2.14–14.86 g VOCs/m2 painted area. EFs of six materials were firstly estimated, which are electrophoretic primer (152.31 ± 97.39 g VOCs/SUV car, 0.97 ± 0.38 g VOCs/m2 painted area), sealant (48.39 ± 26.20 g VOCs/SUV car, 0.46 ± 0.25 g VOCs/m2 painted area), floating coat (87.40 ± 75.63 g VOCs/SUV car, 0.86 ± 0.74 g VOCs/m2 painted area), colored paint (127.24 ± 168.24 g VOCs/SUV car, 1.25 ± 1.66 g VOCs/m2 painted area), varnish (205.46 ± 218.14 g VOCs/SUV car, 2.01 ± 2.15 g VOCs/m2 painted area), and cleaning solvent (328.54 ± 404.94 g VOCs/SUV car, 3.23 ± 3.98 g VOCs/m2 painted area). OVOCs (37.40–51.60 %) and aromatics (36.40–37.00 %) were the dominant components. n-Butyl acetate, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, undecane, n-hexanal, acetone, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5 -trimethylbenzene, m/p/o-xylene, 3-ethylbenzene, and 4-ethylbenzene were the major VOCs species, accounting for 68 % of total VOCs in the automobile manufacturing industry. Considering the OFP values of species, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, acetaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone are the key active species that should be prioritized for control.

Characteristic, source apportionment and effect of photochemical loss of ambient VOCs in an emerging megacity of Central China

During the transportation from emission sources to sampling site, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) undergo photochemical losses which have significant effects for tropospheric ozone (O3) formation and VOCs source apportionment. In this study, based on hourly speciated VOC data from May 23, to July 8, 2019 with high O3 concentrations, the concentration level, chemical composition, and diurnal variation of observed VOCs were studied, and the initial concentration of VOCs was obtained by combining the local emission inventory in Zhengzhou, Central China. The impact of photochemical loss on source apportionment was evaluated using the Positive Matrix Factorization/Multilinear Engine 2-Species Ratio (PMF/ME2-SR) model based on observed and initial VOCs concentration (OC-PMF and IC-PMF). Results suggest that during the observed period, the average concentration of total VOCs (TVOCs) was 23.74 ± 9.20 ppbv, and alkanes (3.92 ± 2.40 ppbv) were the predominant component. The photochemical losses of TVOCs were approximately 10.15 ± 7.13 ppbv, with an average loss rate of 29.9%. The ozone formation potential (OFP) based on the initial VOCs concentration was 2.2 times higher than that observed VOCs concentration. Alkenes contributed the most to OFP and were also the largest contributors to photochemical losses. TVOC concentrations increased by 5.0% during O3 pollution compared to non-O3 pollution. Seven sources of VOCs were determined, including biomass burning, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), vehicle emission, industrial emission, solvent usage, gasoline evaporation, and biogenic emission. Compared to the results of IC-PMF, the contributions of these sources in OC-PMF were underestimated by 15.4%, 14.4%, 13.0%, 11.7%, 31.5%, 7.6%, and 4.7%, respectively. This study still exhibits certain limitations in calculation method, and further exploration can be conducted in the future.

Temporal evolution of speciated volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from solvent use sources in the Pearl River Delta Region, China (2006–2019)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from solvent use sources constitute an important part of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. While stringent control measures targeting VOCs have been implemented in recent years, an assessment of historical trends is imperative to evaluate their effectiveness. In this study, trends of VOC emissions, compositions, and reactivity from solvent use sources in the PRD region from 2006 to 2019 were estimated using a developed methodology, which considered the improvement of manufacturing equipment and removal efficiency. Results show that total VOC emissions from solvent use sources displayed an overall increase from 277 kt in 2006 to 400 kt in 2019 despites some fluctuations, with metal products contributing more than 20 % each year. Aromatics and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) accounted for over 70 % of total VOC emissions, increasing by 21 kt and 52 kt respectively. OFP and SOAFP increased by 40 % and 23 % respectively from 2006 to 2019. Specific aromatic species, including m/p-xylene, toluene, 1,2,3,5-tetramethylbenzene, o-xylene and ethylbenzene are identified as key species in both VOC emission amount and reactivity. This study aims to facilitate the understanding of VOC emission evolution from solvent use sources in the region and provide insights into the impact of enacted measures, aiding in the future development of more targeted and efficient strategies in the PRD region.

Characteristics of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted from Airport Sources and Their Effects on Ozone Production.

In recent years, commercial air transport has increased considerably. However, the compositions and source profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from aircraft are still not clear. In this study, the characteristics of VOCs (including oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs)) emitted from airport sources were measured at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. The results showed that the compositions and proportions of VOC species showed significant differences as the aircraft operating state changed. OVOCs were the dominant species and accounted for 63.17%, 58.44%, and 51.60% of the total VOC mass concentration during the taxiing, approach, and take-off stages. Propionaldehyde and acetone were the main OVOCs, and dichloromethane and 1,2-dichloroethane were the main halohydrocarbons. Propane had the highest proportion among all alkanes, while toluene and benzene were the predominant aromatic hydrocarbons. Compared with the source profiles of VOCs from construction machinery, the proportions of halogenated hydrocarbons and alkanes emitted from aircraft were significantly higher, as were those of propionaldehyde and acetone. OVOCs were still the dominant VOC species in aircraft emissions, and their calculated ozone formation potential (OFP) was much higher than that of other VOC species at all stages of aircraft operations. Acetone, propionaldehyde, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and ethylene were the greatest contributors to ozone production. This study comprehensively measured the distribution characteristics of VOCs, and its results will aid in the construction of a source profile inventory of VOCs emitted from aircraft sources in real atmospheric environments.

Production of oxygenated volatile organic compounds from the ozonolysis of coastal seawater

Abstract. Dry deposition of ozone (O3) to the ocean surface and the ozonolysis of organics in the sea surface microlayer (SSML) are potential sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the marine atmosphere. We use a gas chromatography system coupled to a Vocus proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer to determine the chemical composition and product yield of select VOCs formed from ozonolysis of coastal seawater collected from Scripps Pier in La Jolla, California. Laboratory-derived results are interpreted in the context of direct VOC vertical flux measurements made at Scripps Pier. The dominant products of laboratory ozonolysis experiments and the largest non-sulfur emission fluxes measured in the field correspond to Vocus CxHy+ and CxHyOz+ ions. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis suggests that C5–C11 oxygenated VOCs, primarily aldehydes, are the largest contributors to these ion signals. In the laboratory, using a flow reactor experiment, we determine a VOC yield of 0.43–0.62. In the field at Scripps Pier, we determine a maximum VOC yield of 0.04–0.06. Scaling the field and lab VOC yields for an average O3 deposition flux and an average VOC structure results in an emission source of 10.7 to 167 Tg C yr−1, competitive with the DMS source of approximately 20.3 Tg C yr−1. This study reveals that O3 reactivity to dissolved organic carbon can be a significant carbon source to the marine atmosphere and warrants further investigation into the speciated VOC composition from different seawater samples and the reactivities and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yields of these molecules in marine-relevant, low NOx conditions.

Traceability tagging of volatile organic compound sources and their contributions to ozone formation in Suzhou using vehicle-based portable single-photon ionization mass spectrometry

BackgroundIn recent decades, there has been an increasing global preoccupation with atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Given the significant impact of VOCs as pollutants and essential precursors of ozone (O3) in urban and industrial areas, it is imperative to identify and quantify the sources of their emissions to facilitate the development and implementation of effective environmental control strategies.MethodsA mobile laboratory vehicle equipped with a single-photon ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometer (SPI–TOFMS) and a navigation system was employed to establish the traceability of VOCs that contribute to the formation of ozone in Suzhou Industrial Park. The method exhibited a favorable detection limit of 0.090 ppbv, accompanied by a mass resolution of 1500 for the instrument and a correlation coefficient ≥ 0.990. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was utilized to determine the source appointment of the VOCs.ResultsThe study tentatively traced and identified the VOCs emissions source and their contribution to ozone formation in Suzhou. Using the PMF model, the sources of VOCs were profiled: three primary sources of VOCs were identified, namely, vehicular emissions, an industrial solvent, and biofuel combustion. Alkanes groups were found to be the most abundant VOCs species, accounting for 60% of the total VOCs, followed by aromatics and alkenes. Maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) quantifies the impact of photochemical reaction mechanism on the potential ozone formation.ConclusionsThe findings of this study complement existing knowledge on the pollution status of atmospheric VOCs and highlight the correlation with ozone formation potential in Suzhou. The aforementioned sources were identified as the primary factors responsible for the pollution in Suzhou. The successful implementation of SPI–TOFMS has demonstrated a promising methodology that is well-suited for the real-time and online monitoring of VOCs in the atmosphere. In addition, a library for identifying VOC fingerprints from the same plant was established. This library serves as a comprehensive resource for establishing on-site VOC traceability, estimating source apportionment, and evaluating their impact on ozone formation.

Elucidating contributions of volatile organic compounds to ozone formation using random forest during COVID-19 pandemic: A case study in China

Ozone has been reported to increase despite nitrogen oxides reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and ozone formation needs to be revisited using volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are rarely measured during the pandemic. Here, a total of 98 VOCs species were monitored in an economy-active city in China from January 2021 to August 2022 to assess contributions to ozone formation during the pandemic. Total VOCs concentrations were 35.55 ± 21.47 ppb during the entire period, among which alkanes account for the largest fraction (13.78 ppb, 38.0%), followed by aromatics (6.16 ppb, 16.8%) and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs, 5.69 ppb, 15.7%). Most VOCs groups (e.g., alkenes, OVOCs) and individual species (e.g., isoprene, methyl vinyl ketone) display obvious seasonal and diurnal variations, which are related to their sources and reactivities. No weekend effects of VOCs suggest limited influences from traffic emissions during pandemic. Aromatics and alkenes are the major contributors (39% and 33%) to ozone formation potential, largely driven by o/m/p-xylene (21%), ethylene (15%), toluene (9%). Secondary organic aerosol formation potential is dominated by toluene (>50%) despite its low proportion (5%). Further inclusion of VOCs and meteorology in the Random Forest model shows good ozone prediction performance (R2 = 0.77–0.86, RMSE = 11.95–19.91 μg/m3, MAE = 8.89–14.58 μg/m3). VOCs and NO2 contribute >50% of total importance with the largest difference in importance ratio of VOCs/NO2 in the summer and winter, implying ozone formation regime may vary. No seasonal variations in importance of meteorology are observed, while importance of other variables (e.g., PM2.5) is highest in the summer. This work identifies critical VOCs groups and species for ozone formation during the pandemic, and demonstrates the feasibility of machine learning algorithms in elucidation of ozone formation mechanisms.

Establishment and verification of anthropogenic speciated VOCs emission inventory of Central China

Improving the accuracy of anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission inventory is crucial for reducing atmospheric pollution and formulating control policy of air pollution. In this study, an anthropogenic speciated VOCs emission inventory was established for Central China represented by Henan Province at a 3 km × 3 km spatial resolution based on the emission factor method. The 2019 VOCs emission in Henan Province was 1003.5 Gg, while industrial process source (33.7%) was the highest emission source, Zhengzhou (17.9%) was the city with highest emission and April and August were the months with the more emissions. High VOCs emission regions were concentrated in downtown areas and industrial parks. Alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons were the main VOCs contribution groups. The species composition, source contribution and spatial distribution were verified and evaluated through tracer ratio method (TR), Positive Matrix Factorization Model (PMF) and remote sensing inversion (RSI). Results show that both the emission results by emission inventory (EI) (15.7 Gg) and by TR method (13.6 Gg) and source contribution by EI and PMF are familiar. The spatial distribution of HCHO primary emission based on RSI is basically consistent with that of HCHO emission based on EI with the R-value of 0.73. The verification results show that the VOCs emission inventory and speciated emission inventory established in this study are relatively reliable.

[Characteristics，Sources，and Ozone-sensitive Species of VOCs in Four Seasons in Yuncheng].

Based on the one-year observational data of volatile organic compounds （VOCs） in an urban area of Yuncheng in 2021， the concentration， composition， sources， and ozone-sensitive species of VOCs in four seasons were analyzed. The results showed that the average annual concentration of VOCs was （32.1 ±24.2）×10-9， i.e.， at the national middle level. The seasonal concentrations of VOCs were in the order of： winter （46.3×10-9）&gt; autumn （35.5×10-9）&gt; spring （25.6×10-9）&gt; summer （21.2×10-9）. Alkanes and OVOCs were the most dominant VOCs compounds， accounting for 69.0%-80.4% of TVOCs in Yuncheng. Affected by changes in source emissions， the proportion of OVOCs was higher in spring and summer （41%-43%）， whereas the proportion of alkanes was higher in autumn and winter （42%-43%）. Vehicle exhaust， LPG/NG， industrial production， and combustion sources were identified as the main sources of VOCs in Yuncheng. The largest contributors in the four seasons were vehicle exhaust （28.5% in spring）， secondary + combustion sources （29.0% in summer）， LPG/NG sources （30.4% in autumn）， and coal combustion （27.3% in winter）. The ozone formation was located in the transitional regime in summer and in the VOC-limited regime in other seasons. Ozone production was more sensitive to alkenes （isoprene， ethylene， and propene）， OVOCs （acetaldehyde and propanal）， and aromatics （xylene， toluene， and benzene）. Winter was more sensitive to ethylene， and the other seasons were more sensitive to isoprene. The primary emission sources related to these sensitive species should be reduced to achieve the goal of air quality improvement.

Artificial nose of scalable plasmonic array gas sensor for Multi-Dimensional SERS recognition of volatile organic compounds

Gas sensing is one kind of promising analytical technique for high-flux screening and evaluation. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is arising but usually focuses on a single species of VOCs due to the limitations of complexity, stability, and accuracy in practical applications. Canine animals have a sensitive sense of smell due to their large number of olfactory cells. Inspired by this, here we innovatively integrate scalable plasmonic arrays and multi-dimensional chemometrics for simultaneous SERS detection of multiple food-borne VOCs. Both direct and indirect SERS strategies are integrated by coating the array surface with MOFs or different monolayers to provide multi-dimensional recognition and readouts. Four species of VOCs including bacterial metabolites, hydrogen sulfide, aldehyde, and biogenic amine were selectively captured and produced unique SERS spectral profiles. The multi-dimensional outputs greatly increase the dimensionality of VOC fingerprints, thereby significantly improving the sensitivity, reliability, and accuracy for freshness discrimination and forecasting in real food smell evaluation. By virtue of multi-dimensional SERS recognition and machine learning, the array gas sensor shows higher accuracy than traditional SERS analysis and is a promising platform for in situ, real-time, and high-flux gas sensing and inspection.

Database of emission factors of volatile organic compound (VOC) species in motor vehicle exhaust in China

The synergistic strategy for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and O3 pollution prevention and control has emerged as a pivotal approach in combating air pollution. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as crucial precursors to both O3 and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), with motor vehicles representing one of their significant sources. In this study, a standard for establishing a database of VOC species emission factors for motor vehicles was developed, and a database containing 134 VOC species was constructed through field tests and literature surveys. The VOC emissions of light-duty gasoline passenger vehicles (LDGPVs) comprised primarily alkanes and aromatics. The VOC emissions of light-duty diesel trucks (LDDTs) comprised mostly alkanes. Regarding low-speed trucks, 3-wheel vehicles, medium-duty diesel trucks (MDDTs) and heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs), their VOC emissions comprised mainly oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs). The update of emission standards resulted in a reduction in VOC species emission factors while altering the composition of VOCs. Attention should be directed toward isopentane, benzene and dichloromethane emitted by LDGPVs, dodecane, undecane, ethene and propene emitted by LDDTs, and acetaldehyde emitted by HDDTs. VOC species originating from LDGPVs were more dispersed than those originating from LDDTs and HDDTs. In addition, variations in VOC species were observed among motor vehicles with different fuel types. Toluene, ethene, benzene, m,p-xylene, isopentane, hexanal, ethyne and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene were the predominant VOC species emitted by gasoline vehicles. Diesel vehicles emitted mainly dodecane, formaldehyde, propene, undecane, acetaldehyde, ethene, decane and benzene. The results could enhance our comprehension of the emission characteristics of VOC species originating from motor vehicles and provide data support and a scientific foundation for achieving synergistic PM2.5 and O3 pollution prevention and control.

Significance of Volatile Organic Compounds to Secondary Pollution Formation and Health Risks Observed during a Summer Campaign in an Industrial Urban Area.

The chemical complexity and toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are primarily encountered through intensive anthropogenic emissions in suburban areas. Here, pollution characteristics, impacts on secondary pollution formation, and health risks were investigated through continuous in-field measurements from 1-30 June 2020 in suburban Nanjing, adjacent to national petrochemical industrial parks in China. On average, the total VOCs concentration was 34.47 ± 16.08 ppb, which was comprised mostly by alkanes (41.8%) and halogenated hydrocarbons (29.4%). In contrast, aromatics (17.4%) dominated the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) with 59.6% and 58.3%, respectively. Approximately 63.5% of VOCs were emitted from the petrochemical industry and from solvent usage based on source apportionment results, followed by biogenic emissions of 22.3% and vehicle emissions of 14.2%. Of the observed 46 VOC species, hexachlorobutadiene, dibromoethane, butadiene, tetrachloroethane, and vinyl chloride contributed as high as 98.8% of total carcinogenic risk, a large fraction of which was ascribed to the high-level emissions during ozone pollution episodes and nighttime. Therefore, the mitigation of VOC emissions from petrochemical industries would be an effective way to reduce secondary pollution and potential health risks in conurbation areas.

A green strategy for upcycling utilization of core parts from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs): Pollution source analysis, technology flowchart, technology upgrade

The disposal of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) is an issue of great concern to the society, because of its huge amount, resource value and environmental pollution. A wide variety of pollutants generate and release during the recycling process. However, previous studies are piecemeal and segmentary, the correlation between treatment flowchart and pollution is unknown, and pollution source analysis in ELV recycling and core parts (engine, gear box, etc.) remanufacturing bases is still a challenge. In this study, the aim is to propose a green strategy for upcycling utilization of ELV part based on pollution source analysis, technology flowchart, and technology upgrade. We synthetically analyzed current typical ELV dismantling and core part remanufacturing processes of ELVs. A total of 36 volatile organic compound (VOC) species and 7 heavy metals were found in dismantling process, and 61 VOC species were detected in remanufacturing process. Based on statistical analysis and treatment process characteristics, 18 pollution fingerprints were constructed. At last, an intelligent dismantling and upcycle utilization line for ELVs has been developed to improve production efficiency and reduce pollution release.

Different VOC species derived from fugitive emissions at various altitudes around petrochemical plant

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from fugitive sources are crucial for environmental and health risk assessments. However, monitoring these emissions at ground level, according to traditional technical specifications, has made it challenging to identify polluted air masses and collect purposeful samples. In this study, we focused on utilizing an unmanned aerial vehicle system to obtain air samples around a petrochemical industrial park. We conducted a quantitative analysis of 108 VOC species and compared the results between aerial and ground-level samples. The findings indicated a higher presence of reactive compounds in the aerial samples. The sample pairs exhibited relatively homogeneous compositions of hydrocarbons with fewer than eight carbon atoms, suggesting a well-mixed condition for light compounds. Conversely, the aerial samples exclusively exhibited high mixing ratios of C8–C15 compounds, including branched paraffins and aldehydes. Based on the quantified VOCs, we evaluated the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAP). The results highlighted aldehydes, alkenes, and aromatics, particularly propanal, 2-butene, m/p-xylene, and benzaldehyde, as priority control compounds. Additionally, the semiquantitative concentrations of these non-quantitative C8–C15 species ranged from 1 to 15 ppbv, with a total content exceeding 150 ppbv, it indicated the significant contribution to ambient secondary pollution. These results provide valuable insights into the identification of potential emission sources and the assessment of environmental repercussions attributed to these intermediate-volatile organic compounds from fugitive emissions around petrochemical plant.

Comprehensive characterization of speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gas-phase and particle-phase intermediate- and semi-volatile volatility organic compounds (I/S-VOCs) from Chinese diesel trucks

We established the comprehensive emission profiles of organic compounds for typical Chinese diesel trucks. The profiles cover the entire volatility range, including speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs), and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). The VOCs and I/SVOCs were analyzed by one-dimensional gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC qMS) and two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToF-MS) separately. The impacts of starting mode and aftertreatment technology on the VOC, gaseous and particulate I/SVOC emissions, and the gas-particle partitioning were investigated. The emission factor (EF) of gas phase I/SVOCs was approximately 10 times higher than that of particle phase I/SVOCs and the chemical compositions and volatility distributions varied greatly. VOC, IVOC, and SVOC emissions significantly decreased when vehicles were equipped with advanced aftertreatment technologies. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) can remove >71 % VOC, 74 % gaseous, and 88 % particulate I/SVOCs, many of which are significant secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors. The chemical compositions and volatility distributions of the gaseous I/SVOCs and unburned diesel fuel were similar, revealing that diesel fuel is the main origin of the gaseous I/SVOCs. The I/SVOC emission profiles covering the whole volatility range, i.e., log10C* = −3 to 10 (C*: effective saturation concentration, μg m−3) were established.

Obtaining accurate non-methane hydrocarbon data for ambient air in urban areas: comparison of non-methane hydrocarbon data between indirect and direct methods

Abstract. Since non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) include numerous species of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), they are the only indicators that can characterize the total amount of VOCs in ambient air. More than 90 % of NMHC instruments in the market use the indirect method for NMHC determination, utilizing a gas chromatograph to determine the concentrations of total hydrocarbons (THCs) and methane in air. However, we found indirect NMHC measurements incorrectly characterized the low NMHC concentrations in the urban air. These measurements were hindered by the uncertain changes in the errors associated with low THC concentrations, humidity and macroscopic substances (oxygen) in the atmosphere. In this study, we conducted intercomparisons between 10 instruments in the market using different operation principles; among these, two used the direct method, and eight used the indirect method. For the indirect method, experiments showed that when the NMHC concentration was 50 ppb C, the errors in the measurement results were 32 % (CH4) and 98 % (THC) when compared to theoretical values. The oxygen content in the sample gas directly affected the response of the THC. The effect of increased oxygen content on the analysis of oxygen-containing substances was more significant than that of the increase in hydrocarbon substances. The response of dry zero was blank, and the response value increased non-linearly with relative humidity (RH). RH had a great impact on low NMHC concentrations of nearly 50 %. For the direct method, although various flow designs were applied for different instruments, the results indicated that they generally showed lower interference and higher accuracy for the ambient NMHC measurements. With the online direct methods, we obtained more reliable data and characteristics for low-concentration NMHCs in downtown Shanghai. The median of hourly data was 163.1 ppb C, and the highest ratio of the maximum and minimum concentrations of NMHCs reached 9.56 in a single day.
