Trust my gesture or my word: How do listeners choose the information channel during communication?

Information can be conveyed via multiple channels such as verbal and gestural (visual) channels during communication. Sometimes the information from different channels does not match (e.g., saying right while pointing to the left). How do addressees choose which information to act upon in such cases? In two experiments, we investigated this issue by having participants follow instructions on how to move objects on the screen. Experiment 1 examined whether people's choice of channel can be altered by feedback favoring either the verbal or the gestural channel. In Experiment 2, there was no feedback and participants were free to choose either channel. We also assessed participants' verbal and visuospatial working memory capacities. Results showed that, when faced with contradicting information, there is a natural bias at the group level toward relying on the verbal channel, although this bias can be temporarily altered by probabilistic feedback. Moreover, when labels were shorter and of higher frequency, participants relied more on the verbal channel. In the absence of feedback, the capacity of individuals' visual, but not verbal, working memory determined reliance on one channel versus the other. Collectively, these results show that information selection in communication is influenced by group-level biases, as well as the properties of items and characteristics of individuals. Cognitive-Motor Training Improves Reading-Related Executive Functions: A Randomized Clinical Trial Study in Dyslexia.

Children with developmental dyslexia (DD) often struggle with executive function difficulties which can continue into adulthood if not addressed. This double-blinded randomized clinical trial study evaluated the short-term effects of the Verbal Working Memory-Balance (VWM-B) program on reading-related executive functions, reading skills, and reading comprehension in Persian children with DD. The active control group [12 children with DD with a mean age of 9 years (SD = 0.90)] received training using the single-task VWM program, while the experiment group [15 children with DD with a mean age of 8 years (SD = 0.74)] received training with the dual-task VWM-B program. Both groups received fifteen training sessions, and assessments were conducted before and after the intervention. The groups were homogenized for possible confounders of age, gender, IQ level, and attention level. The study employed separate mixed ANOVA analyses to estimate the impact of training programs on various measured functions. Significant improvements were observed in the outcome measures of backward digit span, text comprehension, verbal fluency, Stroop color-word test and interference, and the reading subtests. Additionally, significant correlations were found between reading skills and backward digit span, text comprehension, verbal fluency, and Stroop variables. In conclusion, the dual-task VWM-B program was found to be more effective than the single-task VWM program in improving selective attention, cognitive inhibition, verbal working memory capacity, information processing speed, naming ability, and lexical access speed. These enhanced executive functions were associated with improved reading skills in children with DD.

The role of visual working memory in capacity-limited cross-modal ensemble coding

Ensemble coding refers to the brain's ability to rapidly extract summary statistics, such as average size and average cost, from a large set of visual stimuli. Although ensemble coding is thought to circumvent a capacity limit of visual working memory, we recently observed a VWM-like capacity limit in an ensemble task where observers extracted the average sweetness of groups of food pictures (i.e., they could only integrate information from four out of six available items), thus suggesting the involvement of VWM in this novel form of cross-modal ensemble coding. Therefore, across two experiments we investigated if this cross-modal ensemble capacity limit could be explained by individual differences in VWM processing. To test this, observers performed both an ensemble task and a VWM task, and we determined 1) how much information they integrated into their ensemble percepts, and 2) how much information they remembered from those displays. Interestingly, we found that individual differences in VWM capacity did not explain differences in performance on the ensemble coding task (i.e., high-capacity individuals did not have significantly higher “ensemble abilities” than low-capacity individuals). While our data cannot definitively state whether or not VWM is necessary to perform the ensemble task, we conclude that it is certainly not sufficient to support this cognitive process. We speculate that the capacity limit may be explained by 1) a bottleneck at the perceptual stage (i.e., a failure to process multiple visual features across multiple items, as there are no singular features that convey taste), or 2) the interaction of multiple cognitive systems (e.g., VWM, gustatory working memory, long term memory). Our results highlight the importance of examining ensemble perception across multiple sensory and cognitive domains to provide a clearer picture of the mechanisms underlying everyday behavior.

31 Examining the Mechanisms of Verbal Working Memory Capacity Consumption in Monolingual Spanish-Speaking Individuals

Objective:Converging evidence across languages suggests that the word length effect (WLE; rate of number of syllables, phonemes, or pronunciation times per word) significantly contributes to estimates of verbal working memory (WM) capacity limits in the storage phase, but not in the manipulation phase (i.e., word length effect decay), of WM. Direct examination of the WLE on verbal WM performance within monolingual Spanish-speakers has not been reported. We investigated the psychophysical mechanisms of capacity consumption in Spanish-speakers across three syllabic word length rates to clarify the relative contributions of the WLE to storage (digit span forward) versus manipulation (digit span backward) memory phases within one language of monolingual speakers.Participants and Methods:Monolingual Spanish-speaking adults (N = 84) born in Latin American countries and age 18-65 completed testing over Zoom. Inclusion criteria required proficiency in the Spanish-language; exclusion criteria were bilingualism, multilingualism, TONI-4 IQ < 85, or history of head injury/LOC. A within-group design measured the WLE across three cognitive load conditions in the forward and backward directions of the digit span test varying in Spanish syllabic word length: the Mexican WAIS-IV Digit Span Test (“Standard Load”), and two modified measures with either a ∼20% decrease (“Low Load”) or ∼20% increase (“High Load”) in total syllables/digit relative to the Standard Load.Results:A reverse WLE was observed on syllable accuracy percentage task performance (p < 0.01), such that longer word length led to higher capacity limits during storage WM. A WLE, not decay, was found on both raw score (p < .001) and syllable accuracy percentage (p < 0.01) task performances during manipulation WM, where longer word length led to lower capacity limits.Conclusions:The reverse WLE was attributed to higher-order, executive-function cognitive strategies (such as chunking) that superseded negative word length effects. A larger syllabic discrepancy during manipulation WM could have superseded executive-function strategies, rendering a traditional WLE. Our study contributed more precise capacity estimates and clearer understanding of successful WM performance within monolingual, Latin American-born Spanish-speakers, helping to reduce cultural disparities in neurocognitive and neuropsychological research. Future studies may extend these findings to examine how WM capacity resources can be harnessed to improve memory strategies in clinically-applied settings with Spanish-speaking populations.

However, the role of the WLE on WM limits across these phases has not been reported in monolingual Spanish-speakers. Latin American-born, monolingual Spanish-speakers (N = 84) age 18-65 were administered forward and backward directions of the digit span test across three cognitive load conditions of Spanish syllabic word length: Mexican WAIS-IV Digit Span ("Standard Load"), and two modified measures with relative ~20% decrease ("Low Load") or ~ 20% increase ("High Load") in total syllables/digit. A reverse WLE was observed during storage WM (digit span forward), where Spanish-speakers attained higher capacity estimates (p < 0.01) in High Load relative to Low Load syllabic word length. The WLE was detected during manipulation WM (digit span backward), where lower capacity limits (p < 0.001) were observed in the High Load, compared to Standard Load, condition. Unexpectedly, high loads did not yield a WLE in the storage phase, but evidence of the WLE was present in the manipulation phase. Executive-function mnemonic strategies (chunking) may have superseded the role of a WLE on storage memory, whereas a traditional WLE was observed when chunking strategies were more difficult to implement during manipulation memory. These findings aim to reduce cultural disparities in estimates of WM performance in neurocognitive and neuropsychological research with Hispanics.

Verbal working memory capacity modulates semantic and phonological prediction in spoken comprehension.

Mounting evidence suggests that people may use multiple cues to predict different levels of representation (e.g., semantic, syntactic, and phonological) during language comprehension. One question that has been less investigated is the relationship between general cognitive processing and the efficiency of prediction at various linguistic levels, such as semantic and phonological levels. To address this research gap, the present study investigated how working memory capacity (WMC) modulates different kinds of prediction behavior (i.e., semantic prediction and phonological prediction) in the visual world. Chinese speakers listened to the highly predictable sentences that contained a highly predictable target word, and viewed a visual display of objects. The visual display of objects contained a target object corresponding to the predictable word, a semantic or a phonological competitor that was semantically or phonologically related to the predictable word, and an unrelated object. We conducted a Chinese version of the reading span task to measure verbal WMC and grouped participants into high- and low-span groups. Participants showed semantic and phonological prediction with comparable size in both groups during language comprehension, with earlier semantic prediction in the high-span group, and a similar time course of phonological prediction in both groups. These results suggest that verbal working memory modulates predictive processing in language comprehension.

Speed of Information Processing and Verbal Working Memory in Children and Adolescents With Cochlear Implants.

Verbal working memory delays are found in many deaf children with cochlear implants compared with normal-hearing peers, but the factors contributing to these delays are not well understood. This study investigated differences between cochlear implant users and normal-hearing peers in memory scanning speed during a challenging verbal working memory task. To better understand variability in verbal working memory capacity within each sample, associations between memory scanning speed, speech recognition, and language were also investigated. Twenty-five prelingually deaf, early implanted children (age, 8-17 yr) with cochlear implants and 25 normal-hearing peers completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition, Letter-Number Sequencing (LNS) working memory task. Timing measures were made for response latency and average pause duration between letters/numbers recalled during the task. Participants also completed measures of speech recognition, vocabulary, and language comprehension. Children with cochlear implants had longer pause durations than normal-hearing peers during three-span LNS sequences, but the groups did not differ in response latencies or in pause durations during two-span LNS sequences. In the sample of cochlear implant users, poorer speech recognition was correlated with longer pause durations during two-span sequences, whereas poorer vocabulary and weaker language comprehension were correlated with longer response latencies during two-span sequences. Response latencies and pause durations were unrelated to language in the normal-hearing sample. Children with cochlear implants have slower verbal working memory scanning speed than children with normal hearing. More robust phonological-lexical representations of language in memory may facilitate faster memory scanning speed and better working memory in cochlear implant users.

Relationship Between Bilingual Verbal Working Memory and Language Dominance

The purpose of the study is to explore how language dominance impacts bilingual individuals verbal working memory. The study recruited 36 participants who are bilingual in both English and Chinese Mandarin age between 18 to 25 years old. In 90-minute experimental sessions, participants verbal working memory capacities both English and Chinese were measured by Following Instruction. And their language proficiencies in both English and Chinese were measured by Elicited Imitation Test. The result shows that Chinese dominant bilingual participants verbal working memory capacity were significantly impacted by their language dominance, but English bilingual participants verbal working memory capacity were not significantly impacted by their language dominance. Future research should consider to study whether Following Instructions is a reliable measure for bilingual populations verbal working memory.

The role of working memory updating and capacity in children's mathematical abilities: A developmental cascade model.

Previous studies indicated that working memory (WM) updating and WM capacity play essential roles in mathematical ability. However, it is unclear whether WM capacity mediates the effect of WM updating on mathematics, and whether the cascading effects vary with different mathematical domains. The current study aims to explore the longitudinal mediating role of WM capacity between WM updating and mathematical performance, and how the relations change with the age and domains. A total of 131 Chinese first-graders participated the study. Participants were required to complete tasks on WM updating and WM capacity in Grade 1 and Grade 2, as well as paper-and-pencil tests on mathematics achievement in Grade 3. The role of WM updating and capacity in the development of pupil's mathematical achievement was examined. Results revealed that verbal WM updating in Grade 1 predicted basic arithmetic and logical-visuospatial ability in Grade 3 via its cascading effect on verbal WM capacity in Grade 2. Moreover, visuospatial WM updating in Grade 1 predicted visuospatial WM capacity in Grade 2. Visuospatial WM capacity in Grade 1 predicted logical-visuospatial ability in Grade 3 instead of basic arithmetic ability in Grade 3. The findings suggested that WM updating exerts effect on pupil's mathematical performance via WM capacity, meanwhile, this effect depends on children's mathematics domain.

A Positive Association between Working Memory Capacity and Human Creativity: A Meta-Analytic Evidence.

Creativity serves as a fountain for social and scientific development. As one of the most crucial human capabilities, creativity has been believed to be supported by the core component of higher cognitive functions—working memory capacity (WMC). However, the evidence supporting the association between WMC and creativity remains contradictory. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis using random-effects models to investigate the linear association between WMC and creativity by pooling the individual effect size from the previous literature. Further, a subgroup analysis was performed to examine whether such association is specific for different WMC categories (i.e., verbal WMC, visual−spatial WMC and dual-task WMC). The main meta-analytic results showed a significantly positive association between WMC and creativity (r = .083, 95% CI: .050−.115, p < .001, n = 3104, k = 28). The subgroup analysis demonstrated consistent results by showing a significantly positive association between them, irrespective of WMC category. We also found that cultural environments could moderate this association, and we identified a strong correlation in participants from an Asian cultural context. In conclusion, this study provides the evidence to clarify the positive association between WMC and creativity, and implies that the Asian cultural context may boost such an association.

Multilingualism and verbal short-term/working memory: Evidence from academics

AbstractTo date, the evidence regarding the effect of bilingualism/multilingualism on short-term memory (STM) and working memory (WM) capacity is inconclusive. This study investigates whether multilingualism has a positive effect on the verbal STM and WM capacity of neurotypical middle-aged and older individuals. Eighty-two L1-Norwegian sequential bilingual/multilingual academics were tested with tasks measuring verbal STM/WM capacity. Degree of bilingualism/multilingualism for each participant was estimated based on a comprehensive questionnaire. Different measures of bilingualism/multilingualism were used. Data on potentially influencing non-linguistic factors were also collected. Correlation and regression analyses showed that multilingualism impacts both verbal STM and verbal WM. In particular, all analyses showed that number of known foreign languages was the strongest predictor of verbal STM and WM capacity. The results are discussed in light of recent studies on the impact of bilingualism on STM/WM and on recent proposals regarding the mechanism underlying so-called bilingual advantage.

Individual differences in working memory capacity and conscious processing do not explain explicit and implicit learning outcomes in physical education

This study examined the effects of explicit versus implicit learning methods on motor learning and self-efficacy of 11-to 14-year old students (n = 81) practicing the basketball layup during physical education. The main aim was to test the effects of students' verbal working memory capacity (WMC) and propensity for conscious motor processing (CMP) on explicit and implicit learning outcomes. The students practiced basketball layups for three weeks (one session/week) during regular PE classes under practice conditions that either promoted explicit or implicit learning. Verbal WMC and CMP propensity were measured separately. At the posttest, students had significantly improved their layup performance and technique, and self-efficacy, but no differences were noted between the intervention groups (explicit vs. implicit). Students' verbal WMC and CMP propensity did not differentially predict the learning outcomes for the explicit or implicit learning groups. Therefore, in this PE setting, both explicit and implicit learning methods seemed to similarly improve movement skill. Further study is needed to examine under which conditions individual constraints such as verbal WMC and propensity for conscious processing influence the effects of explicit and implicit learning.

Moment-to-Moment Processing of Complex Sentences by Adults with and without Developmental Language Disorder

Introduction. Limited evidence suggests that adults with developmental language disorder (DLD) take different information into account as they process sentences as compared to peers with typical language. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how two factors affect sentence processing in adults with DLD: online storage costs and lexical expectations created by nouns. Methods. Forty-three adults, 21 with DLD, listened to complex sentences presented word-by-word, and their listening times were recorded. The sentences included either object relative clauses or sentential complements which differed in online storage demands. The main clause subject nouns differed in co-occurrence frequency with “that” in sentences produced by typical adults. Participants completed a running span task to assess verbal working memory capacity. Results. Mixed effects models found differences by sentence region. Participants with DLD processed embedded clause verbs faster than participants with typical language, and poorer language ability was associated with faster processing of conjunctions “that” and “which.” Participants with greater verbal working memory capacity or typical language were affected by noun co-occurrence frequencies but those with lower working memory or DLD were not. Conclusions. The results align with prior findings that verbal working memory capacity influences what information affects moment-to-moment sentence processing. Those with greater capacity appeared to be more affected by temporary ambiguity. As compared to adults with typical language, processing times of adults with DLD were less sensitive to information on words that frequently co-occur with nouns. This aligns with prior findings suggesting that adults with DLD are less sensitive to the frequency of the structures and arguments that co-occur with verbs.

Production of Sentential Negation in German and Italian Non-fluent Aphasia

The ability of persons with non-fluent aphasia (PWAs) to produce sentential negation has been investigated in several languages, but only in small samples. Accounts of (morpho)syntactic impairment in PWAs have emphasized various factors, such as whether the negative marker blocks or interferes with verb movement, the position of the Negation Phrase in the syntactic hierarchy or the interpretability of negation. This study investigates the ability of German- and Italian-speaking PWAs to construct negative sentences, as well as the role of verbal working memory (WM) capacity and education in task performance and production of sentential negation. German and Italian differ in the syntactic properties of the negative markers that are relevant here (nicht and non, respectively). A sentence anagram task tapping into the construction of negative and affirmative declarative sentences was administered to 9 German- and 7 Italian-speaking PWAs, and to 14 German- and 11 Italian-speaking age- and education-matched healthy volunteers. We fitted generalized linear mixed-effects models to the datasets. There was no significant difference between negative and affirmative sentences in either group of PWAs. There was a main effect of verbal WM capacity on task performance, but no interaction between verbal WM capacity and production of negative vs. affirmative sentences. Education did not affect task performance. The results are discussed in light of different linguistically-informed accounts of (morpho)syntactic impairment in non-fluent aphasia.

Spatialization in working memory and its relation to math anxiety.

Working memory (WM) is one of the most important cognitive functions that may play a role in the relation between math anxiety (MA) and math performance. The processing efficiency theory proposes that rumination and worrisome thoughts (induced by MA) result in less available WM resources (which are needed to solve math problems). At the same time, high MA individuals have lower verbal and spatial WM capacity in general. Extending these findings, we found that MA is also linked to the spatial coding of serial order in verbal WM: subjects who organize sequences from left-to-right in verbal WM show lower levels of MA compared with those who do not spatialize. Furthermore, these spatial coders have higher verbal WM capacity, better numerical order judgment abilities, and higher math scores. These findings suggest that spatially structuring the verbal mind is a promising cognitive correlate of MA and opens new avenues for exploring causal links between elementary cognitive processes and MA.

Visual working memory performance is intact across development in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with atypical visual processing and deficits in working memory (WM). Visual WM performance typically improves between childhood and adulthood, but such improvement may be atypical in ASD. To better understand how visual WM develops, we used a well-established change detection task across multiple visual features. We examined visual WM for color, shape, and pattern in children, adolescents, and adults with and without ASD. VWM capacity and performance for all visual features improved across age similarly for both the TD and ASD groups. While performance was better on set size 4 trials than set size 8 trials for color, shape, and no change trials, such an effect was not evident for pattern change trials. Overall, the present findings suggest that VWM for different visual features may be intact across development in ASD. The ability to hold multiple objects in mind (WM) improves across typical development, but it remains unclear whether such improvement occurs in ASD. We found that developmental improvements in WM for different types of object details (e.g., color, shape, and pattern) is generally similar for both ASD and typical development. High verbal working memory load impairs gesture-speech integration

Abstract While previous studies have shown the importance of visuo-spatial working memory in the processing of co-speech iconic gestures, clear evidence for a potential involvement of the verbal working memory (vWM) is currently lacking. To address this issue, participants in the present study were presented with a dual task paradigm. The main outcome variable was the performance on a Stroop-like gesture task which provides a behavioural index of gesture-speech integration. Participants performed this task under conditions of either high or low concurrent vWM load. Unlike in previous studies, the number of words to remember in the high load condition was determined by their individual verbal span rather than being fixed. Results showed reaction time costs in the form of longer reaction times for semantically incongruent gesture-speech combinations as compared to congruent combinations. However, this semantic congruency effect disappeared when the vWM load increased. This result suggests a causal involvement of verbal working memory capacity in gesture-speech integration.

First Event-Related Potentials Evidence of Auditory Morphosyntactic Processing in a Subject-Object-Verb Nominative-Accusative Language (Farsi).

While most studies on neural signals of online language processing have focused on a few—usually western—subject-verb-object (SVO) languages, corresponding knowledge on subject-object-verb (SOV) languages is scarce. Here we studied Farsi, a language with canonical SOV word order. Because we were interested in the consequences of second-language acquisition, we compared monolingual native Farsi speakers and equally proficient bilinguals who had learned Farsi only after entering primary school. We analyzed event-related potentials (ERPs) to correct and morphosyntactically incorrect sentence-final syllables in a sentence correctness judgment task. Incorrect syllables elicited a late posterior positivity at 500–700 ms after the final syllable, resembling the P600 component, as previously observed for syntactic violations at sentence-middle positions in SVO languages. There was no sign of a left anterior negativity (LAN) preceding the P600. Additionally, we provide evidence for a real-time discrimination of phonological categories associated with morphosyntactic manipulations (between 35 and 135 ms), manifesting the instantaneous neural response to unexpected perturbations. The L2 Farsi speakers were indistinguishable from L1 speakers in terms of performance and neural signals of syntactic violations, indicating that exposure to a second language at school entry may results in native-like performance and neural correlates. In nonnative (but not native) speakers verbal working memory capacity correlated with the late posterior positivity and performance accuracy. Hence, this first ERP study of morphosyntactic violations in a spoken SOV nominative-accusative language demonstrates ERP effects in response to morphosyntactic violations and the involvement of executive functions in non-native speakers in computations of subject-verb agreement.

Speed of Information Processing and Working Memory in Children with Cochlear Implants

Background: Cochlear implants (CIs) restore partial hearing to deaf children, promoting the development of spoken language skills. However, because of reduced auditory and language experience, children who receive CIs are at risk for delays not only in language skills but also in language-related neurocognitive skills such as verbal working memory (VWM - the ability to retain language information in immediate memory concurrently with other cognitive processing). Although VWM delays in children with CIs are well-documented, the foundational processes underlying these delays are less clear. This study investigated the hypotheses that slower speed of information processing during VWM tasks contributes to VWM delays in CI users and that this slower information processing speed is associated with spoken language outcomes. &#x0D;  &#x0D; Methods: 25 early-implanted, prelingually-deaf children with CIs and 25 normal-hearing (NH) peers completed tests of VWM, neurocognitive, and speech-language functioning. Speed of information processing during the VWM test was assessed by measuring response latency and average pause duration. &#x0D;  &#x0D; Results: Children with CIs showed poorer VWM scores than NH peers, but the groups did not differ on response latencies or pause durations. Response latencies were significantly correlated with VWM capacity, speech, and language outcomes in both groups. &#x0D;  &#x0D; Conclusion: Speed of information processing in VWM was similar for children with CIs and NH. In both groups, shorter response latencies (faster speed of execution of the cognitive operations of working memory) were associated with better neurocognitive and spoken language outcomes. In the CI sample, pause durations were inconsistently associated with VWM and language outcomes. &#x0D;  &#x0D; Clinical Policy Impact and Implications: Speed of information processing for VWM is associated with core neurocognitive and spoken language outcomes for children with CIs and should be a routine target of assessment and intervention post-implantation.  

Linking metaphor comprehension with analogical reasoning: Evidence from typical development and autism spectrum disorder.

We examined the relationship between metaphor comprehension and verbal analogical reasoning in young adults who were either typically developing (TD) or diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The ASD sample was highly educated and high in verbal ability, and closely matched to a subset of TD participants on age, gender, educational background, and verbal ability. Additional TD participants with a broader range of abilities were also tested. Each participant solved sets of verbal analogies and metaphors in verification formats, allowing measurement of both accuracy and reaction times. Measures of individual differences in vocabulary, verbal working memory, and autistic traits were also obtained. Accuracy for both the verbal analogy and the metaphor task was very similar across the ASD and matched TD groups. However, reaction times on both tasks were longer for the ASD group. Additionally, stronger correlations between verbal analogical reasoning and working memory capacity in the ASD group indicated that processing verbal analogies was more effortful for them. In the case of both groups, accuracy on the metaphor and analogy tasks was correlated.
