Occurrence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Fogwater at Urban, Suburban, and Rural Sites in Northeast France between 2015 and 2021

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exist in the atmosphere in the vapor and particulate phases, as well as in solubilized form in fog/rain/cloud waters. In the current paper, fogwater samples are collected during 42 events between 2015 and 2021 at four different sites (Strasbourg, Geispolsheim, Erstein, Cronenbourg) in the Alsace region. Organics are extracted using liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) supported on a solid cartridge (XTR Chromabond), and then analyzed by gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The total PAHs and PCBs concentrations in fog samples vary between 0.58 and 6.7 µg L−1 (average of 2.70 µg L−1), and 0.14 and 15.5 µg L−1 (average of 2.75 µg L−1). Low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs are predominant and highly detectable compared to high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs, while pentachloro-biphenyls are the dominant PCB congener. The PAHs and PCBs concentrations have increased over the sampling years at all sites, except for a slight decrease in PCBs level at Geispolsheim. A diagnostic ratio (DR) and principal component analysis (PCA) are applied to suggest potential contamination sources at Strasbourg metropolitan. Their results reveal that PAHs derive from a mixture of pyrogenic activities, while PCBs mainly come from industrial activities. The results also reveal, in some cases, inter-site variability for simultaneous and successive fog events.

Screening and optimization of interpolation methods for mapping soil-borne polychlorinated biphenyls

There is yet no scientific consensus, and for now, on how to choose the optimal interpolation method and its parameters for mapping soil-borne organic pollutants. Take the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for instance, we present the comparison of some classic interpolation methods using a high-resolution soil monitoring database. The results showed that empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK) has the highest accuracy for predicting the total PCB concentration, while root mean squared error (RMSE) in inverse distance weighting (IDW) is among the highest in these interpolation methods. The logarithmic transformation of non-normally distributed data contributed to enhance considerably the semivariogram for modeling in kriging interpolation. The increasing of search neighborhood reduced IDW's RMSE, but slightly affected in ordinary kriging (OK), while both of them resulted in over smooth of prediction map. The existence of outliers made the difference between two points increase sharply, and thereby weakening spatial autocorrelation and decreasing the accuracy. As predicted error increased continuously, the prediction accuracy of different interpolation methods reached unanimity gradually. The attempt of the assisted interpolation algorithm did not significantly improve the prediction accuracy of the IDW method. This study constructed a standardized workflow for interpolation, which could reduce human error to reach higher interpolation accuracy for mapping soil-borne PCBs.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Semen Quality in Healthy Young Men Living in a Contaminated Area.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors that have been implicated in potential damage to human semen. However, the studies conducted so far provide contrasting results. Our study aimed to investigate the associations between PCB serum and semen levels and semen quality in high school and university students living in a highly PCB-polluted area of Italy. Subjects with a normal body mass index who did not make daily use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or medication were selected. All participants provided a fasting blood and a semen sample. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to determine the concentrations of 26 PCB congeners. The concentrations of PCB functional groups and total PCBs were also computed. A total of 143 subjects (median age 20, range 18-22 years) were enrolled. The median total PCB concentrations were 3.85 ng/mL (range 3.43-4.56 ng/mL) and 0.29 ng/mL (range 0.26-0.32 ng/mL) in serum and semen, respectively. The analysis of the associations between sperm PCB concentration and semen parameters showed (a) negative associations between some PCB congeners, functional groups and total PCBs and sperm total motility; (b) negative associations of total PCBs with sperm normal morphology; and (c) no association of PCBs with sperm concentration. Subjects at the highest quartile of semen total PCB concentration had 19% and 23% mean reductions in total motility and normal morphology, respectively, compared to those at the lowest quartile. The analysis of the associations of serum PCB levels with sperm parameters yielded null or mixed (some positive, other negative) results. In conclusion, the present study provides evidence of a negative effect of some PCB congeners and total PCBs in semen on sperm motility and normal morphology. However, the associations between the concentration of serum and semen PCB congeners and functional groups and sperm quality parameters were inconsistent.

Ecological and Health Risk Assessment of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Water and Sediments in Bodo Riverine Area, River State, Nigeria

Concentrations of nine polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were assessed in sediments and water in the Bodo River area, Gokana Local Government of River state Nigeria to assess the risk associated within the region due to the effect of oil spillage and marine pollution. The analytical procedure involved the application of Gas Chromatography coupled with mass spectrometric detection (GC/MS) for identification and quantification of and polychlorinated biphenyls respectively with high degree of accuracy and precision after triplicate analysis. All the selected PCB congeners analyzed were detected in the analyzed samples at different frequencies. The total concentrations of PCBs ranged from nd (not detected) to 4.15 mg/kg in sample A with an average concentration of 1.66 mg/kg, nd to 8.4 mg/kg in sample B with an average concentration of 3.25 mg/kg and nd to 7.30 mg/kg in sample C with an average concentration of 3.64 mg/kg in sediments. While the total concentrations of PCBs in the water sample ranged from nd (not detected) to 1.25 mg/kg in sample A with an average concentration of 0.56 mg/kg, nd to 4.50 mg/kg in sample B with an average concentration of 1.20 mg/kg and nd to 2.2 mg/kg in sample C with an average concentration of 0.88 mg/kg. Health risk assessment employed in this study includes the chronic daily intake and the carcinogenic risk via ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact using established guidelines. The total concentrations of PCBs were used to assess the cancer risk probabilities in humans via ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation of sediments particles. Very low cancer risk was found in all water samples compared to sediments samples caused by ƩPCBs. The results of the ecological risk assessment of PCBs in the Bodo River demonstrated the presence of PCBs in all sampling sites showing that the sites were highly contaminated with largely negative biological effects and a high potential risk to the environment.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in intertidal sediment and water from Lagos lagoon: Baseline report on occurrence, distribution and ecotoxicological risk assessment

To assess the occurrence and potential ecological risk associated with organic micropollutants in Lagos lagoon, 27 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analysed in sediments and surface water. Sediment samples were obtained from 18 designated sites (SD1 – SD18) using a Van Veen grab sampler and extracted following standard procedures. Cleaned extracts were analysed using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (ECD). The concentration of ∑PCBs in sediment samples ranged between 6757.61 and 273.46 µg/kg. The PCB homologues distribution patterns in sediments indicated that the low-chlorinated (∑di-PCB - ∑penta-PCB) PCBs were more dominant with 61.1 % occurrence than the high-chlorinated ((∑hexa-PCB - ∑nona-PCB) PCBs with 38.9 % relative abundance. The following is the decreasing order of the average homologue composition of PCBs in sediment samples: ∑tetra-PCB (24.6%) > ∑octa-PCB (21 %) > ∑hexa-PCB (13.8 %) > ∑penta-PCB (12.8) > ∑tri-PCB (11.4 %) > ∑hepta-PCB (7.8 %) > ∑nona-PCB (4.9 %) > ∑di-PCB (2.9 %). More so, the ∑PCBs in surface water samples ranged from 69.28 to 440.90 ng/L, with the mean ranging between 7.21 and 16.33 ng/L. The class distribution of PCB homologue profiles in water samples indicated that highly-chlorinated (∑hexa-PCB to ∑nona-PCB) PCBs were the dominant homologues, with 94.4 % occurrence, compared to the very low occurrence rate (5.6 %) of the low-chlorinated (∑di-PCB to ∑penta-PCB) PCBs. Hexa-PCBs (PCB-138 and PCB-153) were the dominant congeners in most water samples. The concentrations of ∑PCBs in sediments and surface water were unprecedentedly high at almost all locations. The total toxicity equivalent concentrations (TTECs) of dioxin-like PCBs for the sediment samples ranged from 0.001 to 2.43 µg/kg, with an average of 0.34 µg/kg. These findings suggest that PCB congeners are pervasive from anthropogenic point sources of pollution. Intensive site-specific monitoring and remediation are recommended.

Polyurethane Foam Emission Samplers to Identify Sources of Airborne Polychlorinated Biphenyls from Glass-Block Windows and Other Room Surfaces in a Vermont School.

We hypothesized that emissions of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from Aroclor mixtures present in building materials explain their concentrations in school air. Here, we report a study of airborne concentrations and gas-phase emissions in three elementary school rooms constructed in 1958. We collected airborne PCBs using polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS, n = 6) and PCB emissions from building materials using polyurethane foam passive emission samplers (PUF-PES, n = 17) placed over flat surfaces in school rooms, including vinyl tile floors, carpets, painted bricks, painted drywall, and glass-block windows. We analyzed all 209 congeners represented in 173 chromatographic separations and found that the congener distribution in PUF-PES strongly resembled the predicted diffusive release of gas-phase PCBs from a solid material containing Aroclor 1254. Concentrations of airborne total PCBs ranged from 38 to 180 ng m-3, a range confirmed by an independent laboratory in the same school. These levels exceed action levels for all aged children set by the State of Vermont and exceed guidance levels set by the U.S. EPA for children under age 3. Emissions of PCBs from the glass-block windows (30,000 ng m-2 d-1) greatly exceeded those of all other surfaces, which ranged from 35 to 2700 ng m-2 d-1. This study illustrates the benefit of the direct measurement of PCB emissions to identify the most important building remediation needed to reduce airborne PCB concentrations in schools.

Effects of mixtures of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and three organochlorine pesticides on cognitive function differ between older Mohawks at Akwesasne and older adults in NHANES

BackgroundAkwesasne Mohawks has been exposed to high concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and background levels of organochlorine pesticides, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (DDE), and mirex. We have previously reported relative contributions to the mixture of low- and high-chlorinated PCBs, HCB, and DDE on cognitive decrements in Mohawks of various ages. ObjectiveThis study examines differences in the mixture effects of PCB congener groups, HCB, DDE, and mirex on cognitive function in older Mohawks and less PCB-exposed older adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2002 cycles. MethodsWe used Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to evaluate the mixture effects of different PCB congener groups, HCB, DDE, and mirex on cognitive function in both populations. Models were adjusted for age, sex, education levels, and race/ethnicity focusing on individuals 60 years and older. ResultsOlder Mohawks had 3-fold higher mean total PCB concentrations and 1.8-fold higher mirex, but slightly lower mean DDE and HCB levels than NHANES older adults. Higher mixture concentrations were significantly associated with greater cognitive decline. In older Mohawks, low- and high-chlorinated PCBs, HCB, and DDE contributed to the cognitive score decline. In contrast, score decline in older NHANES adults were primarily from high-chlorinated PCBs and DDE with a threshold dose of approximately 2.08–2.27 ng/g and 2.02–2.40 ng/g, respectively. ConclusionMixtures of PCBs and organochlorine pesticides increase the risk of cognitive decline in both older Mohawks and NHANES older adults. However, contributions to these mixture effects show significant differences. In older Mohawks, high- and low-chlorinated PCBs, DDE, and HCB are the primary contributors, while high-chlorinated PCBs and DDE are important contributors in NHANES older adults. Due to chronic heavy exposures to PCBs, older Mohawks had a significantly increased risk of cognitive decline compared to general older adults from NHANES.

Serum levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in early pregnancy and their associations with gestational diabetes mellitus

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) are extensively present in humans and may disturb glucose metabolism during pregnancy. However, previous reports on the associations between PCBs/PBDEs levels and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have been inconsistent. We performed a nested case-control study to measure the serum levels of 6 PCB and 7 PBDE congeners in early pregnancy, and to assess their associations with GDM risk and blood glucose levels. Totally, 208 serum samples (104 GDM cases and 104 controls) were included based on a prospective cohort which was carried out in Jiangsu province, China, from 2020 to 2022. The results showed that PCB-153 was the major PCB congener, whereas PBDE-47 was the predominant PBDE congener. The continuous concentrations of PCB-153, PBDE-28, and total PCB were significantly related to an increased risk of GDM, with adjusted ORs (95%CI) of 1.25 (1.04–1.50), 1.19 (1.02–1.39), and 1.37 (1.05–1.79), respectively. Potential dose-response relationships were also observed between serum levels of PCB-153 (P = 0.011), PBDE-28 (P = 0.028), total PCB (P = 0.048), and total PCB/PBDE (P = 0.010) and GDM risk. Moreover, PCB-153, PBDE-28 and total PCB levels were positively related to 1-h OGTT blood glucose (adjusted βPCB-153: 0.14, 95%CI: 0.00–0.28; adjusted βPBDE-28: 0.20, 95%CI: 0.08–0.32; adjusted βtotal PCB: 0.30, 95%CI: 0.09–0.50), whereas none of the PCBs/PBDEs were statistically related to fasting blood glucose and 2-h OGTT blood glucose (all P > 0.05). Further meta-analysis also supported the association of PCBs exposure with GDM risk. Our study provides further evidence that PCBs/PBDEs exposure may increase GDM risk during pregnancy.

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in city drains in Makurdi, central Nigeria: Seasonal variations, source apportionment and risk assessment

A study of seasonal variation, sources and potential risks of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in open city drains in Makurdi, Central Nigeria was carried out. OCPs and PCBs were quantified using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. The total (∑8OCPs) concentrations (ngL−1) of OCPs in water was 2.99 with a mean ± SD of 0.75 ± 0.12 during wet season, while during dry season, the values were 11.43 and 2.86 ± 1.54 respectively. In sediment, the total concentration (ngg−1) of OCPs was 5270.66 with a mean ± SD of 1756.89 ± 450.01 during wet season and a total concentration of 5837.93 and the mean ± SD of 1945.98 ± 646.04, during dry season. Source apportionment of OCPs suggested historic application of the pollutants. The total (∑7PCBs) concentration (ngL−1) of PCBs in water was 0.24 with a mean ± SD of 0.03 ± 0.02 during wet season and a total concentration of 0.61 with a mean ± SD of 0.09 ± 0.11 during dry season. The total concentration (ngg−1) of PCBs in sediment was 37.88, mean ± SD of 5.41 ± 5.93 during wet season and a total of 47.07 and mean ± SD of 6.72 ± 7.27 during dry season. Ecological risk assessment based on effect range low (ERL) and effect range median (ERM) or threshold effect level (TEL) and probable effect level (PEL) that ecological risks were possible for some OCPs in this study, which calls for source control and remediation of the affected sites. Toxicity equivalency (TEQ) of PCB-118, the dioxin-like congener, indicated that it was most harmful to humans/mammals followed by birds, then fish.

Characterization of organic contaminants associated with road dust of Delhi NCR, India.

Hydrophobic organic contaminated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and CHNS (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulphur species) are explosively associated with road dust particles. A few organic contaminants are toxic in nature and have an unpleasant effect on human health. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the United States-Environmental Protection Agency has considered several PAHs and PCBs as carcinogens for human beings. In the proposed study, the anthropogenic contaminants present in road dust were assessed in six representative diversified sites i.e. industrial, commercial, office, residential, construction and traffic intersection in Delhi NCR, India. Roadside dust samples were gathered in premonsoon, monsoon and postmonsoon seasons and characterized for PAHs, PCBs and CHNS. The concentration of total PAHs (16 Nos) and PCBs (6 Nos) of the selected sites ranged from 0.27µg/kg to 605.80µg/kg and 0.01µg/kg to 41.26µg/kg, respectively. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance study suggested that the presence of O = C = O, Si-O, carbonyl, acidic or aliphatic esters group were associated with road dust particles. Hydrogen and sulphur concentrations were not detected in the selected road dust samples. Carbon and nitrogen concentrations varied from 2.24% to 16.82% and 0.69% to 14.5%, respectively, seasonally. In the premonsoon season, road dust was distinguishably contaminated as compared to monsoon and postmonsoon season, whichmight be due to movement of contaminated road dust from adjacent locations. It was perceived that Delhi NCR organic contamination inroad dust was much below as compared to other countries. It may be concluded that due to the presence of significant amounts of carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the road dust, to a greater extent, road dust can be fertile and might be advantageous for green belt development to mitigate air pollution. The utilization of road dust will further bring down the burden of landfill sites and may lead towards sustainability.

First insight into accumulation of characteristics and tissue distribution of PCBs, PBDEs, and other BFRs in the living Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis).

Persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and other brominated flame retardants, were detected in the liver, muscle, and ovary tissues of the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis) incidentally caught around Gangga Island, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, on November 5, 2014. Concentrations of total PCBs (209 congeners, 300-2600ngg-1 lipid weight) in all tissues showed higher than those of PBDEs (41 congeners, 3.9-6.3ngg-1 lw) and BTBPE (1.1-3.6ngg-1 lw). The tissue-specific PCB and PBDE profiles were likely due to differences in the lipid composition. Toxic equivalent (TEQ) values of dioxin-like PCBs in coelacanth tissues were lower than the benchmark values for early-life fish. However, compared with the data reported for deep-sea fishes in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the relatively high concentrations of PCBs detected in this study raise concerns regarding Indonesian coelacanth conservation and habitat conditions.

Mixture Effects of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Three Organochlorine Pesticides on Cognitive Function in Mohawk Adults at Akwesasne.

The Mohawks at Akwesasne have been highly exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), via releases from three aluminum foundries located near the reserve. They are also exposed to organochlorine pesticides, namely hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and mirex. Previous studies have demonstrated reduced cognition in relation to total PCBs, but the effects of the mixtures of different PCB congener groups, HCB, DDE, and mirex on cognitive function have not been studied. Therefore, cognitive performance for executive function, scored via the digit symbol substitution test (DSST), in Mohawk adults aged 17-79 years (n = 301), was assessed in relation to serum concentrations of low-chlorinated PCBs, high-chlorinated PCBs, total PCBs, HCB, DDE, and mirex. We used mixture models employing the quantile-based g-computation method. The mixture effects of low-chlorinated PCBs, high-chlorinated PCBs, HCB, DDE, and mirex were significantly associated with 4.01 DSST scores decrements in the oldest age group, 47-79 years old. There were important contributions to mixture effects from low-chlorinated PCBs, high-chlorinated PCBs, and total PCBs, with smaller contributions of HCB and DDE. Our findings indicate that exposures to both low- and high-chlorinated PCBs increase the risk of cognitive decline in older adults, while DDE and HCB have less effect.

Occurrence and Distribution of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) from Sele River, Southern Italy: Analysis of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Organochlorine Pesticides in a Water-Sediment System.

The concentrations, possible sources, and ecological risk of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were studied by analyzing water column (DP), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment samples from 10 sites on the Sele River. Total PCBs concentration ranged from 2.94 to 54.4 ng/L and 5.01 to 79.3 ng/g in the seawater and sediment samples, with OCPs concentration in the range of 0.51 to 8.76 ng/L and 0.50 to 10.2 ng/g, respectively. Pollutants loads in the seaside were measured in approximately 89.7 kg/year (73.2 kg/year of PCBs and 16.5 kg/year of OCPs), indicating that the watercourse could be an important cause of contamination to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Statistical analysis indicates that all polychlorinated biphenyls analytes are more probable to derive from surface runoff than an atmospheric deposition. The results explain that higher concentrations of these pollutants were built in sediment samples rather than in the other two phases, which are evidence of historical loads of PCBs and OCPs contaminants. The Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), the Ecological Risk Index (ERI) and the Risk Quotient (RQ) show that the Sele river and its estuary would reputedly be a zone possibly at risk.

Accumulation and distribution of persistent organic pollutants in surface sediment of the estuarine region and correlation between genetic and environmental factors: A case study

In this study, the accumulation and distribution of nine organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the An Hoa Estuary, Quang Nam Province, Central Vietnam, and the correlation between genetic and environmental factors have been analyzed and assessed. This study analyzed sediment samples from 15 positions in the An Hoa Estuary during the dry season. The OCP concentrations varied between ND (not detected) and 1.82 μ g/kg (S1), mainly consisting of DDE. The total concentration of PCBs ranged between 1.52–19.5 μ g/kg (highest at S13), with PCB-138 and PCB-153 as the congeners most frequently detected in the analyzed samples. The results show that the ecological risk of OCPs and PCBs in the An Hoa Estuary ranges from low to moderate levels. In order to clarify the significance of genetic factors that can be influenced and affected by environmental factors over a certain period, this study also determined the N-acetyltransferase (NAT) enzyme activity in the population residing in the An Hoa Estuary for a period of 30–50 years to show clearly the relationship between weak environmental and genetic factors in determining the risks for environmental health. Based on the results, out of a total of 72 volunteer participants, the phenotype of the N-acetyltransferase system was determined and divided into two groups: rapid (30.6%) and slow (69.4%). Among them, the slow acetylator phenotype is prevalent in two locations, S11 and S13, with 88% and 91.7% of volunteers, respectively. The rapid acetylator phenotype was detected in 17 of 23 participants at location S7, accounting for more than 77% of the total individuals with the rapid acetylator phenotype in this experiment. • The accumulation of nine OCPs and seven PCBs in sediment was determined and assessed. • The highest OCPs (1.82 μ g/kg) and PCBs (19.5 μ g/kg) were detected at sampling sites S1 and S13, respectively. • The activity of xenobiotics biotransformation enzymatic system N-acetyltransferase was determined. • The relationship between weak environmental factors and genetic factors was examined. • The N-acetyltransferase phenotype of citizens was divided into rapid (30.6%) and slow (69.4%).

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) in ambient air and deposition in the German background

PCDD/Fs (17 congeners and Σ tetra -to octachloro homologues) and 209 PCBs were investigated in monthly samples of ambient air (gas + particle phase) and atmospheric deposition at two background monitoring sites in Germany in 2018/19. In atmospheric deposition samples, PCDD/F congeners as well as certain PCBs were frequently below the method quantification limits whereas values for PCDD/F homologue groups could be quantified more often. Annual deposition averages for individual PCDD/Fs were between <0.1 μg/m2d and 6.7 μg/m2d. Averages for Σ TeCDD/F to OCDD/F homologue totals in deposition were about 11 pg/m2d and 19 pg/m2d. Total PCB deposition rates were about 1900 pg/m2d and 1550 pg/m2d. PCDD/F + PCB-deposition rates were below 1 pg WHO2005-TEQ/m2d on average. In ambient air, both substance groups were frequently observed. Annual concentration averages for individual PCDD/F were between 0.1 fg/m³ and 50 fg/m³. Average values for Σ TeCDD/F to OCDD/F homologue totals in ambient air were 283 fg/m³ and 162 fg/m³. Total PCB concentrations were about 50 pg/m³ at both sites. PCDD/F + PCB-TEQ values were lower than 5 fg WHO2005-TEQ/m³ on average. Besides the frequently studied dioxin-like PCBs and six indicator PCBs, the analysis of the 209 PCBs (166 separated PCB-peaks) enabled the identification and evaluation of additional PCBs that might be of environmental concern. Of 166 PCBs or PCB-coelutions, up to 144 were quantified in air samples and up to 94 in atmospheric deposition samples. In ambient air, some of these PCBs were observed at levels similar to or exceeding those of the six indicator PCBs. Important additional PCBs in ambient air were PCB 5 + 8, PCB 11, PCB 17, PCB 18, PCB 20 + 33, PCB 31, PCB 43 + 49, PCB 44, PCB 47 + 48 + 65 + 75, PCB 93 + 95 + 98 + 102, PCB 139 + 149, and PCB 151. The presence of these PCBs in atmospheric samples implies that by analysing only selected PCBs potentially important contaminants are overlooked.

Determination of the gas/particle phase concentrations of PCBs in urban and rural atmosphere in Erzurum, Turkey.

Active sampling was conducted for the first time in Erzurum, Turkey, between August 2012 and January 2013, in order to investigate the presence of 82 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) congeners. Urban and rural ambient air samples, including gas and particle phase atmospheric concentrations (GAPPACs) of PCBs, were collected simultaneously using high volume air sampler (HVAS) at two different sampling points of Erzurum. GAPPACs of PCB samples taken using HVAS in Palandöken Mountain Region (2565m) and Ataturk University Campus (1870m) were analyzed in GC-MS following appropriate extraction steps. Throughout the sampling period, total ambient air concentrations (gas phase + particulate phase) were 10 ± 6 and 27 ± 13pg/m3 (mean) for Palandöken Mountain Region (PMR) and Atatürk University Campus (AUC), respectively. Low molecular weighted PCBs were found to be dominant in both rural an urban sampling sites. Meteorological parameters especially temperature (from Clausius-Clapeyron equation), wind direction, wind velocity, and precipitation were found to be effective on PCB concentration and distribution. The gas-particle distributions of PCBs in the summer and winter period were found to be 82% (gas phase) and 18% (particle phase) in the PMR and 90% (gas phase) and 10% (particle phase) in AUC, through Junge-Pankow adsorption model. In the light of these findings, total PCB concentrations detected in urban atmosphere (due to possible PCB sources) were observed to be higher than those determined in rural area.

Residues of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a wild predatory fish from an e-waste site in South China between 2009 and 2016.

Crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has been banned due to the serious environmental pollution it caused, leaving many abandoned e-waste sites. However, information on the current levels and associated ecological risks of e-waste-derived contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in e-waste site is limited. Wild fish, because they can accumulate high pollutant levels, are suitable indicators for environmental pollution monitoring and has been widely employed as biomonitoring. In this study, we investigated the changes in the levels and profiles of PCBs in a wild fish species, the northern snakehead (Channa argus), before (2009) and after (2016) the ban of crude e-waste recycling from a typical e-waste recycling site in South China. The mean total PCB concentration in the northern snakehead sampled in 2016 (343ng/g ww) declined by 75% compared with that (1410ng/g ww) in 2009. The contributions of less chlorinated congeners (tri-CBs and tetra-CBs) in the northern snakehead tended to decrease over the years, indicating that the lighter congeners are more easily eliminated than the heavier ones in the environment. Our findings suggested no fresh PCB input in these years, as well as the positive impacts of laws and regulations on the prohibition of e-waste recycling. The ecological risk assessment suggested that PCB exposure may have median to high risks to the wild fish and fish-eating wildlife that inhabit the e-waste site, even after the ban of crude e-waste recycling activities.

Characterization and Interpolation of Sediment Polychlorinated Biphenylsand Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethersin Resident Killer Whale Habitat along the Coast of British Columbia, Canada.

The northeastern Pacific northern and southern resident killer whale (Orcinus orca) populations are listed as threatened and endangered in Canada, respectively, with persistent, bioaccumulative contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), posing threats to their recovery. Concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in subtidal surface sediments collected from 97 sites along the British Columbia (BC) coast were used to identify their distribution and profiles, and to assess killer whale habitat quality. Victoria Harbour (VH3(site ID: 1) ) sediments exhibited the highest PCB and PBDE concentrations. For PCBs, PCB-138 was found at the highest concentration, followed by PCB-153, PCB-110, PCB-149, PCB-101, and PCB-118. For PBDEs, individual congeners were ranked as follows: BDE-209 > BDE-207 > BDE-206 > BDE-208 > BDE-47 > BDE-99. Principal component analyses (PCA) illustrated the variations in contaminant profiles, with PC1 for PCBs and PBDEs correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW , p < 0.003). Based on the PCA, sediment particle size, total organic carbon (TOC), and water depth at collection were other factors associated with the distribution of PBDEs, while PCB profiles were associated with TOC. Total PCB and PBDE concentrations at 100% and 34% of the sites, respectively, exceeded the recently adopted British Columbia's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy Working Sediment Quality Guidelines (PCBs 3.7 pg/g dry wt and PBDEs 1000 pg/g dry wt), considered protective of killer whales. Our findings suggest that the legacy of banned PCBs and PBDEs has the potential to constrain the recovery of killer whales as a result of their mobilization from sediments and consequent uptake by marine food webs. Activity-based exposure levels and lifetime cancer risk for workers exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls during electronic waste dismantling in Buriram province, Thailand

The activity-based exposure concentrations of airborne polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling workers in Buriram province were examined, and their possible carcinogenic risk was assessed. The average exposure concentration of total PCBs in the particle (PM2.5–10 and PM2.5) and gas phases were 53.51 ± 23.68, 65.41 ± 23.06, and 82.72 ± 78.61 ng/m3, respectively, and were all significantly (p < 0.05) higher for workers exposed during burning wires than those of the dismantling bulky-, small-, and internal e-waste parts. The dominant PCB congeners mainly found during e-waste dismantling were the low-chlorinated group, including PCB-28, -52, −77, −81, −105, −118, and −126. PCB-28 and -77 were observed as predominant co-congeners derived from mechanical dismantling, whereas PCB-52, -118, and −126 were the main species emitted from burning activities. The workers exposed to PCBs from burning wires were estimated to have the highest lifetime cancer risk of 1.64E-05, about 2.5- to 3.3-fold higher than those who dismantled bulky-, small- and internal e-waste parts. Consequently, workers should be recommended to wear high-efficiency respiratory protection masks to avoid direct exposure to PCBs and to reduce their possible carcinogenic risk.

Vermiremediation applied to PCB and PCDD/F contaminated soils and its implications for percolating water

PCDD/Fs (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans) and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are ubiquitous persistent pollutants with reduced bioavailability, which bioremediation using soil fauna is still managed to treat. This research set out to: (i) study the suitability of earthworms (Eisenia fetida), alone and associated with plants (Lepidium sativum), for the decontamination of PCDD/F and PCB polluted soils in Brescia-Caffaro (Italy), at total and congener concentration levels; (ii) simulate the action of earthworms in groundwater contamination process and nutrient mobility. Five treatments were set up: (i) uncontaminated soil with E. fetida (NC); (ii) contaminated soil (C); (iii) contaminated soil with E. fetida (CEf); (iv) contaminated soil with L. sativum (CLs); (v) contaminated soil with E. fetida and L. sativum (CEfLs). PCBs and PCDD/Fs in the soil prior to testing were measured. Analysis was repeated in soil treatments and percolating water at the end of the test period (4 months). Dissolved nutrient concentrations were measured in percolated water.PCB and PCDD/F concentrations, initially 259333.33 ± 10867.89 ng/kg and 176 ± 10.69 ngTE/kg, were significantly reduced after 4 months in all treatments. Treatments did not differ in total PCBs concentration (from 160,000 ng/kg to 194,000 ng/kg), but CEfLs congeners concentrations were less environmentally threatening; CEf and CLs resulted in lower PCDD/Fs concentration (79.43 ± 3.34 ngTE/kg and 73.03 ± 4.09 ngTE/kg, respectively). The action of earthworms could enhance contaminants and soluble reactive phosphorous content in percolating water.
