Wheeling towards sustainability: the nexus of external pressures, green innovation and circular supply chain excellence

PurposeThe study aims to investigate the firm reaction to external pressures and the subsequent transformation to green innovation (GI) and sustainability, leading to an enhanced circular supply chain performance. The research examined the effect of coercive, normative and mimetic pressures on GI within the Indian tire industry context.Design/methodology/approachThe authors have designed a self-administered questionnaire and received 283 responses. Nonresponse bias analysis was conducted first before proceeding to other assumptions such as constant variance and normality. The confirmatory factor analysis was used to check the data’s integrity and reliability. The PLS-structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to validate the constructs and test the established hypotheses.FindingsExternal regulatory pressures significantly impact the tire industry’s move towards GI. Normative pressures from societal expectations and industry standards, along with mimetic pressures where companies emulate best practices, both drive the industry toward sustainable initiatives. Further, a clear positive relationship emerges between GI and sustainable supply chain practices (SSCP). This shift emphasizes recycling, reusing and reducing waste and showcases the industry’s commitment to minimizing its environmental impact.Originality/valueUnlike existing literature that predominantly explores SSCP, the study introduces an integrated framework that intertwines institutional pressures (IP), green innovation (GI), and SSCP to elevate circular supply chain practices (CSCP). The current study highlights the relationships and practical implications within the Indian tire industry.

Sustainable human resource management practices and corporate sustainable supply chain: the moderating role of firm technology orientation

ABSTRACT This study investigates how corporate human resource management practices contribute to sustainable supply chain practices. The two types of human resource management practices relating to corporate social responsibility, include (1) employee standardised work conditions practices and (2) employee well-being and development practices. Corporate technology orientation is investigated as a moderating factor on the empirical evidence from 15 companies in the mobile technology industry. Results show that employee well-being and development practices lead to stronger community-oriented social responsibility, thus the increasing adoption of sustainable supply chain practices. Corporate technology orientation strengthens the positive impacts of employee well-being and development practices. These results imply the importance of adopting appropriate human resource management strategies, to deploy a sustainable supply chain.

Stage-wise green supply chain management and environmental performance: Impact of blockchain technology

In the era of globalisation, the use of technology and concerns for sustainability is eminent in the supply chain management practices. The current study focuses on sustainable and green supply practices in different stages of supply chain management and how they can be facilitated by blockchain technology (BT). The study has addressed the existing gaps in the area namely, the lack of research assessing stage-wise green supply chain for environmental performance focusing on BT. The current study aims to assess the impact of BT on different stages of the green supply chain and a firm's environmental performance. The study also focuses on analyzing the impact of green supply chain stages on environmental performance. The study uses PLS-based structural equation modelling approach to investigate the hypothesised relationships between BT adoption and stage-wise green supply chain practices. The data was collected from individuals from medium-sized enterprises from the manufacturing industry in India. The findings reveal a positive association between blockchain adoption and green supply chain management practices leading to enhancement in environmental performance. Furthermore, the study indicates a positive relationship between blockchain integration and different stages of the green supply chain, underscoring its multi-faceted impact on environmental performance. The findings imply that the BT adoption can facilitate the realization of sustainable supply chain practices and performance improvement.

The Effect of Supply Chain Sustainability Practices on Romanian SME Performance

The paper uniquely assesses the relationship between the main elements of the sustainability of the supply chain and the performance of Romanian enterprises. To identify dimensions of supply chain sustainability, a sample survey was conducted on a structured questionnaire basis among a sample of 385 Romanian enterprises represented by supply chain managers and practitioners. The hypothesis testing and the validation of the proposed construct model were achieved by using the modeling of the equation with the smallest partial squares (SEM-PLS) and multigroup analysis (PLS-MGA). The results suggest a positive and significant relationship between supply chain sustainability practices and business performance. This study provides original evidence to Romanian managers that business performance can be maximized by focusing on increasing the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of the supply chain. The results of this quantitative marketing research add to the existing literature and have far-reaching theoretical and practical implications for enterprises in the Romanian economy.

Sustainable food chains designed for optimised resource use: Optimising downscaled food chains for sustainable resource use: A comprehensive case study on tomato juice

As consumers increasingly prefer locally sourced food, there is a growing movement towards optimising resource use and reducing emissions in supply chains. While Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) traditionally emphasise social and institutional proximity, this study strategically addresses the environmental impact by implementing innovative technologies on a smaller scale. This article explores the possibility of implementing a mobile processing unit (FOX unit) that utilises two innovative technologies, one for gentle juice extraction (spiral filter) and the other for preservation of freshly pressed products (pulsed electric fields - PEF). The study investigates a solution that could streamline the supply chain between producers and consumers by offering a decentralised and modular approach to processing. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), tomato juice production is compared under traditional thermal pasteurisation (Scenario 1) and the FOX unit (Scenario 2). This study also assesses the impacts of centralising production and shipping raw materials between countries (Scenario 3), considering the FOX unit as part of the evaluation. Further analysis includes relocating this unit to the countries of raw material origin (Scenario 4). Data retrieved from literature, databases, and practical trials, revealed that tomato juice production with the FOX unit led to a 15% reduction in environmental impact across all categories compared to traditional thermal pasteurisation. When relocating the unit, the overall environmental impact decreased as the volume of processed raw materials increased, reaching levels comparable to the results obtained from shipping 1 ton of raw material to a centralised location in various studied countries (with variations in midpoint categories depending on the location, such as 200 tons in France, 15 tons in Italy, and 45 tons in Spain), albeit with variation in the categories. This study highlights the potential environmental benefits of integrating the FOX unit in SFSCs, offering valuable insights for sustainable food supply chain practices.

Companies are increasingly adopting eco-friendly logistics strategies, such as the use of renewable energy in transportation and distribution networks. The integration of advanced technologies, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices and blockchain, is facilitating transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain, ensuring that sustainable practices are upheld from production to delivery. In contrast, Africa presents a unique landscape where sustainable supply chain practices are often influenced by socio-economic factors, resource constraints, and the need for inclusive development. Initiatives in Africa focus on promoting local sourcing, community engagement, and fair trade practices. Innovative approaches include the use of alternative and locally sourced materials, as well as the development of eco-friendly packaging solutions. Additionally, collaboration between businesses and local communities plays a significant role in fostering sustainable practices and creating a positive impact on the social and environmental aspects of the supply chain. This review also highlights challenges faced by both regions, such as regulatory frameworks, infrastructure limitations, and the need for capacity building. Despite these challenges, the growing recognition of sustainability as a critical business imperative is driving a paradigm shift in supply chain practices. This review contributes to the understanding of sustainable supply chain practices by examining innovations in both the USA and Africa. By identifying commonalities and distinctions, it offers insights that can inform global strategies for building resilient, environmentally conscious, and socially responsible supply chains in the pursuit of a sustainable future.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the role of sustainability and ethics in fashion design and production.
 Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries.
 Findings: Sustainability and ethics are pivotal in fashion design and production, shaping decisions across the supply chain. They drive innovation, reduce environmental impact, and ensure fair treatment of workers. Brands prioritizing sustainability and ethics meet consumer demands, fostering industry resilience and positive social impact. Integrating these principles is crucial for promoting a sustainable and responsible fashion industry.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Sustainability theory, ethical fashion theory & systems theory may be used to anchor future studies on the role of sustainability and ethics in fashion design and production. Fashion designers and brands should prioritize sustainable materials, production processes, and supply chain practices. A structural equation modeling framework for exploring the industry 5.0 and sustainable supply chain determinants

Sustainable Supply Chain and Industry 5.0 are two important concepts reshaping how businesses operate in the modern world. Together, these two concepts drive the advancement of a highly sustainable and robust worldwide economy. Companies are now becoming more sustainable in supply chain management, using technologies like blockchain and co-bots to track the origin of goods, ensure ethical and sustainable sourcing, and work with humans safely and effectively. This study develops a theoretical model highlighting the determinants of Industry 5.0, Sustainable Supply Chain Practices, by combining theoretical frameworks from the manufacturing, supply chain, and information systems literature. The study's analytic sample comprises 342 responses collected from professionals working in the electronics industry's supply chain. Hypotheses were constructed employing deductive reasoning, leveraging insights gleaned from prior research. The study is conducted utilizing the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to substantiate the presumed connections among various constructs, namely, Industry 5.0 innovations, Sustainable Supply Chain Practices (SSCP), Sustainable Supply Chain Performance (SCP), and Supply Chain Risks (SCR). The Structural Equation Modeling analysis results show a direct impact of Industry 5.0 technologies through Sustainable Supply Chain Practices can enhance Supply Chain Performance and mitigate Supply Chain Risks. Combining the two paradigms can foster the development of new business models that prioritize sustainability and contribute to a more equitable and environmentally friendly economy that brings positive change for both businesses and society.

Sustainable Supply Chain Practices in the Oil and Gas Industry: A Case Study

Sustainability reporting within the oil and gas (O&G) industry started back in the 1990s and has improved longitudinally since then. However, when reporting their sustainability-related practices and initiatives, O&G companies seldomly mention the term green supply chain management (GSCM). The study aims to investigate the development of GSCM practices in the O&G sector and to categorize how they are integrated with the sustainability practices reported by the industry. A multi-phase research approach was adopted consisting of a comprehensive literature review, followed by a single case study employed in an international oil and gas company. Primary data were collected by conducting 12 semi-structured interviews with senior members of an O&G company. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the primary data from the interviews and to synthesize this work with the secondary data in order to answer the research question. The research identifies that the adoption of green purchasing practices is still in its infancy, whereas green production practices are more advanced compared to the current academic literature on the O&G industry. Additionally, new insights are obtained on how O&G companies are diversifying their business models and investing in the renewable energy business. The results of this work will enable O&G businesses to understand the latest developments in GSCM practices and how they are impacting the O&G sector. Practitioners will also be able to benchmark their current GSCM practices with the research findings and develop and formulate strategies to maximize the implementation of GSCM practices.

Conceptualizing Supply Chain Resilience in Exogenous Crisis Times: Toward a Holistic Definition

AbstractSupply chain resilience has become increasingly crucial in today’s scenario in response to major disruptions that generated huge exogenous crises. This paper investigates the current SCR-related academic literature related to SCR to develop a new holistic definition. A total amount of 214 scientific contributions the last 5 years (i.e., between 2018 and 2022) have been analyzed. Findings revealed four important issues to achieve SCR, i.e., Key resilience attributes, Technology-aided visible SC, Sustainable and measurable SCR practices, and Relationship between SC partners. Leveraging insights gleaned from these critical issues, we have meticulously crafted an updated and comprehensive definition of SCR, by considering the multi-faceted facets that contribute to its holistic understanding. In light of our emerging insights, we suggest a novel approach to fortify organizational supply chain resilience, emphasizing a more holistic perspective. Our recommendations for future research include (1) exploring the integration of emerging technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring to enhance adaptive decision-making in post-COVID-19 supply chains, (2) investigating the strategic role of collaborative networks and information sharing among supply chain partners to enhance agility and responsiveness amidst post-pandemic uncertainties, and (3) analyzing the impact of sustainable and circular supply chain practices on resilience. Findings of the paper and the new holistic definition of SCR have several implications for both academics and managers that are listed at the end of the paper along with limitations of the study and future research avenues.

An integrated FBWM-FCM-DEMATEL model to assess and manage the sustainability in the supply chain: A three-stage model based on the consumers’ point of view

While sustainability is recognized as a crucial aspect of supply chain (SC) management, its implementation within a SC is often fraught with challenges. These challenges encompass possible causal relationships and trade-offs among sustainable SC (SSC) practices, spanning all three dimensions of sustainability. Furthermore, the increasing importance of consumers’ point of view in the rapid and widespread communication era highlights the imperative to integrate this view into the SC’s sustainability efforts. This paper proposes a comprehensive model for assessing and managing the implementation of sustainability in the SC while effectively tackling these challenges and requirements. Specifically, across three distinct stages, the model enables (1) identifying the SSC practices from the consumers’ point of view and ranking them based on their contribution to the overall sustainability; (2) determining the causal relationships among the practices and assessing the sustainability status of the SC; and (3) prioritizing the practices and developing improvement scenarios to improve the overall sustainability of the SC. To support its objectives, the proposed model employs social media analysis and scenario planning, along with three key techniques, including the Fuzzy Best-Worst Method (FBWM) for ranking the practices, Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) for determining the possible causal relationships among the practices and assessing the sustainability status, and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) for segmenting the practices based on their cause-and-effect relationships. Finally, the paper presents an empirical study in which the proposed model is applied to a mobile phone and smartphone (MPSP) SC, representing one of the most commonly consumed products in contemporary human life.

GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN: MODEL ERP UNTUK KOPERASI KECIL DALAM MENGURANGI BIAYA OPERASIONAL

A cooperative is an economic entity that is unique, namely ownership and purpose business involving members.  In cooperatives, apart from being a business owner, members at the same time become perpetrators or actors in operating the business. Cooperatives are business entities that collectively achieve the goals of the individuals who are members. The small farming industry, despite the second food and drink production, often faces many challenges in managing their product. KPSBU as provider credit of small farming industry members has scheduled the delivery chain. This abstract introduces the concept of a Green Supply Chain tied to the specific needs of small-scale credit providers in a small farming sector. By examining the potential benefits and addressing the challenges faced by these farmers to reduce such costs which caused by their activity, this study aims to shed light on practical strategies for developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable supply chain practices in the context of small-scale corps called the ERP model. Through case studies and analyses, this research provides insights that can empower small farmers to navigate the intersection of economic viability and environmental stewardship by adapting and comparing the cost with the efficiency of maximum output.

Supply Chain Complexity and Its Impact on Knowledge Transfer: Incorporating Sustainable Supply Chain Practices in Food Supply Chain Networks

Background: The dynamics of supply chain networks have changed due to increasing complexities. Global expansions and knowledge transfer in supply chain networks bring efficiency and effectiveness to companies. However, the probability of supply chain complexity has also been seen increasing. The barriers to sustainable supply chain networks need to be tackled in an effective manner as they impact business operations. Therefore, it is essential to eliminate and reduce the supply chain complexities, as it will facilitate the process of knowledge transfer and increase the implementation of sustainable practises in supply chain networks. In the previous research, four supply chain complexity drivers were identified. Previous research identified four supply chain complexity drivers by conducting a systematic review. This study investigates which of the four complexity drivers impacts knowledge transfer in the context of the food supply chain sector. Methods: In this research, knowledge transfer is therefore examined from the perspective of sustainable food supply chains. Thirty exploratory qualitative interviews were conducted in this study and analysed using Nvivo (v12) software. This study utilised thematic analysis techniques for the evaluation of the interviews to gather results. Results: The results illustrated six main factors classified under broad categories: integration of Knowledge Transfer, incorporation of technological advancements in supply chain networks, supply chain complexity solutions, supply chain complexity drivers, sustainable supply chain networks, and capability to reduce supply chain complexity. The findings of this study highlight that process complexity significantly influences the process of knowledge transfer in food supply chain networks. The research findings contribute to both academic and practical domains. This study contributes to the aggregation of supply chain complexity and its impact on Knowledge Transfer. Additionally, the findings support supply chain networks, which strive to achieve efficient Knowledge Transfer to attain sustainable value in business operations. Conclusion: This study has proven that robust knowledge transfer reduces supply chain complexity as it makes supply chain systems more resilient and well-coordinated in many potential ways.

Customs intelligence and risk management in sustainable supply chain for general customs department logistics

In this descriptive analytical study conducted within the Jordanian Customs Department, the influence of Customs Intelligence and Risk Management on Sustainable Supply Chain practices and their subsequent effects on Customs Department Logistics were investigated. Data collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to department employees were analyzed using Smart PLS-4. The findings revealed that Customs Intelligence significantly shapes Sustainable Supply Chain practices, emphasizing the importance of data driven decision-making in achieving sustainability goals. Effective Risk Management strategies were found to positively contribute to Sustainable Supply Chain initiatives, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between risk mitigation and sustainability. Sustainable Supply Chain practices, in turn, were demonstrated to enhance the efficiency of Customs Department Logistics. Furthermore, the study unveiled that Sustainable Supply Chain acts as a mediator, enhancing the impact of both Risk Management and Customs Intelligence on Logistics outcomes. These findings collectively underscore the intricate dynamics of these factors in the context of the Jordanian Customs Department, providing valuable insights for optimizing logistics operations, ensuring compliance, and fostering sustainability. This paper contributes valuable insights and empirical evidence to the fields of customs-related logistics, risk management, sustainable supply chain management, and logistics operations within the Jordanian Customs Department. The paper provides recommendations that have the potential to inform and improve logistics practices, benefiting stakeholders in both the public and private sectors and advancing the understanding of these critical dynamics in the broader logistics and supply chain management discipline.

PurposeThe authors explore the impact of an emerging technology, blockchain technology, on diverse governance mechanisms and sustainable supply chain practices and how its relationships with the linkage of these elements.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology incorporates a literature review and a qualitative empirical analysis of the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) standards. Expert opinions from various firms and organizations within the electronics sector are assessed. Through a thematic analysis, the relationships are identified and examined.FindingsData immutability, transparency and traceability capabilities of blockchain technology enhance the relationship between environmental standards and ecological supply chain sustainability practices. Although immature, the blockchain can influence the governance of supply chain sustainability practices. Immaturity of technology, lack of expertise, sharing information and trust have delayed adoption.Originality/valueThere is limited empirical evidence regarding blockchain's impact on governance mechanisms, specifically hybrid public-private mechanisms and sustainable supply chain practices.
