980-970 Ma Sette-Daban event of the Siberian craton: new geochronological and geochemical data, relationship to LIP and potential connection with other LIPs

ABSTRACT The paper presents new geological, geochronological, geochemical and Nd-Sr isotopic data on the Meso- Neoproterozoic dolerites of the Siberian Craton. New U-Pb baddeleyite and apatite ages of a E-W-trending dyke and two sills from southeastern Siberia are 982 ± 11, 977 ± 7, 970 ± 31 and 972 ± 60 Ma, respectively, extending the area of distribution of the event by more than 100 km to the north. The Sette-Daban intrusions are subalkalic mostly low-Ti dolerites, although high-Ti dolerites have been locally documented as well. Trace element abundances in dolerites vary from typical to E-MORB to OIB with arc-like signatures represented by high Th/Yb and low TiO2/Yb ratios. All dolerite samples display moderately positive εNd(t) values varying from +3.3 to +7.7 and indicating the magmas were derived from a depleted mantle source. E-MORB and OIB intrusions are attributed to the different degree of interaction of magma between the depleted asthenospheric mantle and regions within the sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) that were metasomatically enriched during earlier subduction events. Available data on Sette-Daban event distribution, composition and duration satisfy the characteristics of a typical Large Igneous Province (LIP). Similar age 1000–950 Ma mafic magmatism is also recognized in the Baltic and Amazonian cratons and can be potentially correlated with the Sette-Daban event.

Cu-Au-Platinum Group Element Mineralization in the Mbesa Prospect, Southern Tanzania: Unconventional Magmatic Sulfides

Abstract High-grade Cu mineralization was recently discovered in the Mbesa prospect in southern Tanzania, but its origin is poorly constrained. Herein, we present new major element, trace element, rare earth element (REE), and platinum group element (PGE) geochemistry and petrographic data to constrain the origin of the mineralization. The sulfide mineralization is dominated by chalcopyrite and bornite and characterized by high Cu/Ni over 100 in the massive and disseminated ores. The mineralization lacks pyrrhotite and pentlandite, which are found commonly in magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits. Platinum group minerals present are michenerite (PdBiTe) and sudburyite (PdSb). PGE concentrations expressed as Pd + Pt + Au are up to 1.31 and 1.04 ppm in the massive and disseminated ores, respectively. The δ34S of chalcopyrite separates range from –3.9 to –0.6‰, bornite separates vary from –1.8 to 1.1‰, and bornite-chalcopyrite mixtures yield –1.3 and 0.6‰, mostly consistent with a magmatic sulfur origin. The sulfides are hosted by coarse-grained plagioclase amphibolite and hornblende gneiss with recrystallization textures suggestive of metamorphism. Both rocks are characterized by enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs), with negative anomalies of Zr and Nb, consistent with crustal contamination of magmas derived from partial melting of subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). An SCLM origin is further suggested by the close association of Cu sulfides with carbonates and apatite. It is suggested that the sulfides crystallized from the fractionated Cu-rich sulfide melt enriched in intermediate solid solution (iss) at shallow crustal levels. Sulfide were likely mobilized as droplets attached to CO2 vapor phase as expressed by close association between carbonates and apatite with the Cu-rich sulfides. Nickel-rich sulfides may remain undiscovered at deeper portions around the Mbesa prospect.

Post-collisional calc alkaline-adakites from a metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle: Sr-Nd isotopes and bulk-rock geochemistry of Miocene volcanic rocks from the Varzaghan area, NW Iran

ABSTRACT The NW Iran is located at the western termination of the Alborz Mountain range and continuation of the Sanandaj-Sirjan magmatic-metamorphic zone at the NW. The volcanic rocks in the Varzaghan area are distributed over different compositional ranges from high-K basalt, andesite, dacite, and trachyandesite, dacite, to rhyolite with adakitic signatures. Chondrite-normalized REE diagrams show flat MREE and HREE patterns for calc-alkaline volcanic rocks and enrichment in LREE, indicating a garnet-free source. Adakitic rock sample chondrite-normalized REE patterns are relatively steep with significant enrichment in LREE and depletion in HREE, indicating a garnet-bearing source or garnet fractionation process. The arc trace element signatures, narrow range of initial87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.70425–0.70487, different initial143Nd/144Nd(i) = 0.51264–0.51286 and the presence of adakitic rocks reveal that the volcanic rock sources were not the same and can be related to the partial melting of metasomatized mantle and lower continental crust sources. Slab break-off and upwelling of hot asthenosphere in a post-collisional tectonic regime resulted in the melting of the subcontinental lithosphere and lower continental crust which produced calc-alkaline-adakitic volcanic rocks in the Varzaghan area. The main petrological processes involved in the volcanic rocks petrogenesis were fractional crystallization and crustal assimilation.

Neoproterozoic (ca. 830 Ma) carbonatite dykes from Qianlishan in the western North China Craton: Petrogenesis and metallogenic implications

Carbonatite and the associated alkaline intrusive complexes are the primary sources of light rare earth element (REEs). Our field investigations in the western margin of the North China Craton (NCC) have firstly identified over 20 carbonatite dykes and minor coeval carbonate-rich lamprophyre dykes intruding the Paleoproterozoic Qianlishan Group in the southern Qianlishan area. Zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating on six carbonatite samples yielded crystallization ages ranging from 835.2 ± 3.7 Ma to 828.9 ± 3.8 Ma, indicating emplacement of the carbonatite dykes at ca. 830 Ma during the Neoproterozoic. Geochemical data show that most of the carbonatite dykes are rich in light REEs with total light REEs > 600 ppm to 4932 ppm, and the carbonate-rich lamprophyre dykes are characterized by high Cr (1219–1267 ppm) and Ni concentrations (857–1076 ppm). Petrological and scanning electron microprobe (SEM) analytical results show that the dominant REE-bearing minerals in the carbonatites are monazite, and other REE-bearing minerals are parisite and bastnäsite. Geochemical and carbon–oxygen isotopic results indicate that the ca. 830 Ma carbonatite dykes were produced by low-degree partial melting of a previously metasomatised subcontinental lithospheric mantle with assimilation of crustal material. Emplacement of the ca. 830 Ma carbonatite and carbonate-rich lamprophyre dykes in the southern Qianlishan area and the previously reported ca. 810 Ma mafic dykes in the middle Qianlishan area occurred in a continental rift environment. Simultaneous development of the Neoproterozoic (830 − 810 Ma) continental rifting events in the western margin of the NCC and the eastern margin of the Alxa Block as previously suggested may indicate a connection between the eastern Alxa Block and the western NCC during and before the middle Neoproterozoic.

Carbon-rich polyphasic inclusions in postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks from the Dabie Shan, China: Implications for the carbon cycle in continental subduction zones

Subduction is a fundamental geodynamic process that transfers carbon from Earth’s surface into the mantle. However, current understanding of the migration mechanisms, final storage region, and species involved in carbon recycling from continental crust remains limited. Here, we investigated the compositions of polyphasic inclusions and Mg isotopes in postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks from the Dabie Shan region of China. The main rock-forming minerals contained two distinct types of polyphasic inclusions, which displayed systematic differences in daughter mineral/gaseous phase assemblages, including host-like silicates ± carbonates (magnesite, dolomite, and calcite) + CH4 and carbonates + talc ± SiO2 (aqueous) + CH4, respectively. These inclusions indicate that carbon-rich silicate melts and carbon-rich magmatic fluids were trapped by host minerals during magmatic processes. The abundant carbonates and CH4 in both types of inclusions suggest that the mantle source of these postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks was rich in carbon, most likely existing in the forms of CO2 and CH4. Moreover, the studied postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks have mantle-like Mg isotope compositions, with δ26Mg values ranging from −0.23‰ to −0.16‰. The combined observations of polyphase inclusions and Mg isotopes indicate that a substantial carbon-rich mantle domain arose from the metasomatism of silicate melts derived from subducted continental slabs that had dissolved a certain quantity of CO2 and CH4. We proposed that continental subduction is an efficient pathway for transporting crustal carbon into an orogenic subcontinental lithospheric mantle wedge, where the recycled carbon can be stored for >100 m.y. and eventually released to the surface during postcollisional magmatism.

Deep carbon recycling viewed from global plate tectonics

Abstract Plate tectonics plays an essential role in the redistribution of life-essential volatile elements between Earth's interior and surface, whereby our planet has been well tuned to maintain enduring habitability over much of its history. Here we present an overview of deep carbon recycling in the regime of modern plate tectonics, with a special focus on convergent plate margins for assessing global carbon mass balance. The up-to-date flux compilation implies approximate balance between deep carbon outflux and subduction carbon influx within uncertainty but remarkably limited return of carbon to convecting mantle. If correct, carbon would gradually accumulate in the lithosphere over time by (i) massive subsurface carbon storage occurring primarily in continental lithosphere from convergent margins to continental interior and (ii) persistent surface carbon sinks to seafloors sustained by high-flux deep CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Further assessment of global carbon mass balance requires updates on fluxes of subduction-driven carbon recycling paths and reduction in uncertainty of deep carbon outflux. From a global plate tectonics point of view, we particularly emphasize that continental reworking is an important mechanism for remobilizing geologically sequestered carbon in continental crust and sub-continental lithospheric mantle. In light of recent advances, future research is suggested to focus on a better understanding of the reservoirs, fluxes, mechanisms, and climatic effects of deep carbon recycling following an integrated methodology of observation, experiment, and numerical modeling, with the aim of decoding the self-regulating Earth system and its habitability from the deep carbon recycling perspective.

Metallogeny and Mineral Exploration – Some Personal Reminiscences

The following personalised narrative aims to document the highlights of my involvement in some of the ground breaking developments in Economic Geology and their direct application to mineral exploration and discovery over the past half century. The story begins with my introduction to geology at secondary school and university, followed by doctoral research based on fieldwork in the Andes of South America. Then, as an employee of the Chilean Geological Survey, I got my introduction to porphyry copper deposits before returning to the UK to take up a post-doctoral research fellowship. This formative period concluded with my starting out as an independent geological consultant to the global exploration and mining industry. These early years happened to coincide with the plate tectonics revolution and its radical implications for metallogeny. I realised that porphyry copper and related deposits are integral parts of volcano-plutonic arcs generated during subduction of oceanic lithosphere, and volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in ophiolite complexes must have formed at oceanic spreading centres. At approximately the same time, application of K-Ar dating to copper deposits led to definition of metallogenic belts and corresponding epochs in the Andes, and then established the timing of their economically important supergene oxidation and enrichment. Subsequently, using more modern and precise U-Pb zircon and Re-Os molybdenite methods, collaborative attempts were made to determine porphyry copper deposit lifespans and ages of various copper belts, deposits and prospects around the world, including the Zambian Copperbelt. The focus on porphyry copper deposits led first to an appreciation of the linkage between them and subaerial volcanism and the importance of potassic alteration as a major host of hypogene copper mineralisation, and then to geological characterisation of the increasing number of gold-rich examples. Appreciation of the importance of hydrothermal breccias in porphyry copper deposits, including recognition of mineralised diatremes, resulted in a classification scheme for breccias that may be extended to related deposit types. Extensive fieldwork showed that zones of advanced argillic alteration, termed lithocaps, constitute the shallow parts of porphyry copper systems. The role of tectonic uplift in both porphyry copper formation and subsequent supergene modification was also charted. The end result of this body of work was a porphyry copper model that can be used as a basic exploration guide. In response to a marked increase in the world gold price in the late 1970s, more effort was devoted to gold concentrations in magmatic arc terranes, commencing with epithermal gold deposits in the shallow lithocaps of porphyry copper systems. This led to an input to classification schemes for epithermal precious metal deposits and, eventually, to assignment of the three main epithermal types to specific tectono-magmatic settings. After years of speculation, porphyry gold deposits were recognised for the first time in northern Chile, followed by definition of a new gold deposit class in association with relatively reduced granitic intrusions. A magmatic-hydrothermal origin for Carlin-type gold deposits was steadfastly supported over many years, notwithstanding its unpopularity until relatively recently, culminating in a proposal for modern analogues. For decades, metallogenic provinces and corresponding epochs have been widely appreciated, but debate concerning their origin(s) persists. The nature of accompanying magmatism could well provide an adequate explanation for at least some provinces (e.g., tin, molybdenum and possibly silver), but precursor metal enrichment in the lowermost crust and/or subcontinental lithospheric mantle may well be required in the case of gold and copper provinces. The story concludes with brief commentary on mineral exploration, which has been my lifelong (pre)occupation. Requirements for success in mineral exploration are discussed, based primarily on familiarity with the circum-Pacific region, followed by analysis of the types of companies and individuals involved and the burgeoning challenges to the exploration process, which, if not remedied, will have dire consequences for future metal production and global plans for the energy transition. My involvement as a lone practitioner in both mineral exploration and metallogenic research probably says something about my independent character traits, but nonetheless has been largely unstructured and certainly unplanned. I have no hesitation in recommending a similar career path for any recent graduate who relishes adventure and is prepared to endure significant work-life imbalance.

First identification of Mid-Miocene north–south trending dikes in the eastern Qiangtang terrane, eastern Tibet: Mantle melting and implications for plateau uplift

The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau during the Miocene is crucial to understanding continental deformation processes and global climatic events. However, the eastern Tibetan Plateau remains poorly investigated. Mantle-derived magmatism provides crucial insights into the deep dynamic processes and surface uplift of the plateau. In this paper we report the first discovery of north–south trending lamprophyre dikes from the Aduo Basin in the eastern Qiangtang terrane, eastern Tibet. Our new age data show that these lamprophyre dikes were generated in Mid-Miocene (15–13 Ma). This new discovery has bridged the Mid-Miocene mantle-derived magmatic gap in the Qiangtang terrane. Trace element and NdSr isotopic data indicate that they were derived by partial melting of enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Our study implies that the eastern Tibetan Plateau had its attained near-maximum elevation by the Mid-Miocene. Combined with previous research results, we propose that the entire plateau almost simultaneously reached its near-maximum elevation by the Mid-Miocene.

Petrogenesis of the alkaline complex in the Weishan REE deposit, Luxi Block, eastern North China Craton: Implications for REE mineralization

The Weishan REE deposit is one of the largest LREE deposits in China, which is hosted by the Weishan alkaline complex (WSAC) and late Archean gneisses. Two types of mineralization including vein-type and disseminated-type occur in this deposit, of which the former is characterized by large quartz-sulfate-calcite-REE mineral veins cutting all kinds of wallrocks, while the latter is featured by REE minerals disseminated in the alkaline rocks. The vein-type mineralization commonly occurs at shallow depths and has been numerously studied. The disseminated-type mineralization typically occurs at deeper depths, which was newly discovered by drilling exploration and has been poorly studied. In this contribution, zircon U-Pb dating and Hf isotopic analysis as well as whole-rock geochemistry and Sr-Nd isotopic analyses were conducted on the deeply drilled alkaline rocks, combined with molybdenite Re–Os dating on the disseminated ore, with the aim to unravel the petrogenesis of the alkaline rocks and their contributions to the REE mineralization. Zircon U–Pb dating suggests an intrusive age of 119.9 ± 0.9 Ma for the WSAC, which is quite consistent the Re–Os age of 120.0 ± 1.8 Ma for the disseminated ore, corroborating their close genetic correlation. The studied alkaline rocks show enrichment of LILEs, depletion of HFSEs and strong fractionation between LREEs and HREEs, indicating a crustal involvement in the magmas or a metasomatized mantle source. They are characterized by higher Hf (εHf(t) = -6.7 to −12.2) and Nd (εNd(t) = -8.8 to −9.7) isotopic compositions compared with those of the contemporaneous subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). Based on the above features, it is inferred that the parental magmas of the WSAC were mainly derived from an enriched SCLM with some involvement of asthenospheric mantle-derived materials. The mantle source was likely metasomatized by the subducted Paleo-Pacific oceanic plate, leading to the enrichment of REE and carbonate. Rollback of the oceanic slab during the early Cretaceous resulted in an extensional setting in the study region, which was favorable for partial melting of the metasomatized mantle and thus generated the REE-rich alkaline magmas.

Clinopyroxenite Xenoliths Record Magma Transport and Crystallization in the Middle and Upper Crust: A Case Study from the Rockeskyllerkopf Volcanic Complex, West Eifel, Germany

Abstract Clinopyroxenite xenoliths comprising cumulus clinopyroxene ± amphibole together with intercumulus phlogopite ± olivine ± apatite ± titanite form a large part of the xenolith load in the oldest deposits of the Rockeskyllerkopf Volcanic Complex (RVC) in the West Eifel volcanic field. The xenoliths also contain xenocrysts of olivine and clinopyroxene derived from mantle peridotite and clinopyroxene from lower crustal granulite. The clinopyroxenite xenoliths are divided into five groups on the basis of their modal mineralogy and mineral compositions. Groups 1 to 4 define a continuous compositional trend indicative of fractionation of a mafic alkaline magma. Group 5 xenoliths are compositionally distinct and have been tentatively linked to high pressure crystallization of phonolitic magma within the RVC system. Thermobarometry of the group 1 to 4 xenoliths indicates that they crystallized between 1 and 4 kilobars, equivalent to a depth of 4 to 14 km. Group 1 to 3 xenoliths all crystallized at between 1050°C and 1150°C, whereas the amphibole-rich group 4 xenoliths give temperature estimates of ~900°C. The clinopyroxenites share a common parent magma with clinopyroxene–phlogopite veins found in subcontinental lithospheric mantle xenoliths. However, the vein forming mama was richer in incompatible elements, in particular Zr and Hf and is interpreted to be an early formed batch of magma with the clinopyroxenites crystallizing from magma derived from the same mantle, which had been depleted by the earlier phase of melting. Intrusion of magma began around 155 ky prior to the eruption of the RVC. Fe–Mg interdiffusion profiles in zoned clinopyroxene show that the magma that formed the xenoliths was present in the crust for up to 28 ky prior to the eruption. However, most samples give interdiffusion times between 1.5 and 9.9 ky. Based on xenocryst residence times and the calculated P–T conditions for clinopyroxene, there were at least seven separate batches of magma emplaced below Rockeskyllerkopf, probably as sills.

Late Paleozoic potassic igneous rocks of the Adyrtor intrusions in the eastern Kyrgyz Tien Shan: geochemistry, isotope U-Pb zircon geochronology, and related W-Mo(-Cu-Au) mineralization

ABSTRACT The Adyrtor multiphase pluton is situated in the easternmost part of the ‘Main Structural Line of Tien Shan’, or the ‘Nikolaev Line’, and intrudes the Paleoproterozoic metamorphic sequence representing the oldest (1.8–2.5 Ga) continental basement fragment in the Tien Shan orogenic belt. The intrusions comprise mafic to intermediate (monzodiorite, monzonite, quartz syenite) and silicic (quartz monzonite, monzogranite, and leucogranite-alaskite) rocks. Geochemical signatures of the igneous rocks correspond to high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic series intrusions, with a strong A-type granite affinity, emplaced in post-collisional setting. Based on the isotopic U-Pb data, quartz syenite from the Adyrtor intrusions crystallized at 330.7 ± 4.3 Ma, and quartz monzonite – at 329.5 ± 5.8 Ma. Although the ages identified correspond to those of the subduction-related magmatism in the western part of the Middle Tien Shan, geochemical characteristics of the rocks support rather post-collisional setting of the plutons, principally due to a ‘scissor-like’ closure of the Turkestan paleoocean, starting from the east. Magmatic evolution included a generation of shoshonitic magma by low-degree partial melting of the metasomatically-enriched upper mantle, followed by amphibole fractionation in a deep (lower crustal ?) magma chamber. Then, under the influence of mantle-supplied fluids and heat, granitic magmas in the crustal protolith could have been generated, with further mixing/mingling of the mantle-derived mafic (shoshonitic) magma and mantle-induced crustal granitic magma, followed by the magma fractionation and emplacement at shallower crustal levels. Assimilation of an old continental crust is also envisioned, consistent with the presence of the xenocrystic zircons dated at ca. 1.6 Ga to 2.5 Ga and the A-type granitoid affinity of the igneous rocks. The associated skarn-porphyry W-Mo(-Cu-Au) mineralization is consistent with post-collisional setting of the productive intrusions. This mineralization complements the group of similar deposits and occurrences associated with high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic series intrusions in the Middle Tien Shan and globally. The high endowment in W and Mo can be explained by the fertilization of subduction-modified subcontinental lithospheric mantle in these metals, with its further involvement in the magma generation in post-collisional setting. Also, a stronger W-Mo mineralization can reflect a greater role of a crustal protolith in the magma generation, as revealed by the distinct A-type affinity of the igneous rocks.

Remobilization of carbon in the lithospheric mantle during decratonization

The sub-continental lithosphere mantle (SCLM) contains considerable amounts of carbon and is responsible for significant CO2 emissions via magmatism during major heating and rifting events. However, the role of SCLM in Earth's carbon cycle during other geological processes, such as decratonization, a process of major removal and replacement of cratonic SCLM, remains poorly understood. The North China Craton is an archetype of Archean craton having been decratonized during the Mesozoic with extensive magmatism developed. Here we show that the primary melt of Early Cretaceous Yixian basalts contained abundant CO2 (0.6 wt%), through investigating melt inclusions trapped in olivine crystals. The melt inclusions are alkalic and chemically distinct from their sub-alkalic host basalts, which could be explained by that the primary alkalic melt was reactively modified during magma ascent in the SCLM. The primary melt has geochemical characteristics consistent with partial melting of a veined carbon-rich amphibole clinopyroxenite source in the SCLM formed metasomatically during circum-craton subduction events. The findings highlight that the carbon introduced into the cratonic SCLM during subduction could be subsequently reactivated and transferred to the crust and atmosphere through decratonization-related magmatism, which might represent a major process regarding the SCLM in regulating the terrestrial carbon cycle.

Carbonate metasomatism in sub-continental lithospheric mantle: Insights from decoupled Nd[sbnd]Hf isotopes of Mesozoic gabbros in Jinan, eastern North China Craton

The ancient sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) of the eastern North China Craton (NCC) underwent metasomatism in the Triassic due to fluids derived from subducted Yangtze continental crust, followed by further metasomatism during the Jurassic–Cretaceous caused by fluids originating from subducted Paleo-Pacific oceanic slabs. However, the occurrence of carbonate metasomatism during these two geological events is a subject of debate, and the origin of carbonate-bearing metasomatic agents remains ambiguous. Here, we present an integrated study of petrography, whole-rock trace element data and Sr–Nd–Hf–Pb isotope data for the Jinan gabbros in the Luxi block of the eastern NCC. The Jinan gabbros show arc-like trace element patterns and enriched Sr–Nd–Hf–Pb isotopic compositions, suggesting that they originated from partial melting of the enriched ancient SCLM. In addition, there are remarkable similarities in Sr–Nd–Hf–Pb isotopes between the Jinan gabbros and HP–UHP metamorphic rocks in the Dabie–Sulu orogenic belt, indicating the involvement of continental crustal components from the subducted Yangtze block in the mantle source of the Jinan gabbros. The gabbro samples show decoupled NdHf isotopes with positive ∆εHf values (∆εHf = εHf – 1.55 × εNd – 1.21; Vervoort et al., 2011), which were mainly caused by a metasomatic agent with high Nd/Hf ratios. The increase in εNd values with increasing Hf/Hf* (Hf/Hf* = HfPM/[(NdPM × SmPM)0.5]) and Nb/La further indicates that the metasomatic agent in the mantle source was depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs) but enriched in rare earth elements (REEs), resembling the mantle-derived carbonatites in the Luxi area. The Jinan gabbros show significant variations in εNd and εHf, which cannot be explained by the involvement of C–O–H fluids and pure carbonatitic melts in their mantle source. Instead, carbonate-bearing felsic melts from the deeply subducted Yangtze continental crust are proposed to have acted as metasomatic agents. Carbonate metasomatism can significantly weaken the strength and decrease the melting temperature of the overlying ancient SCLM. Therefore, carbonate metasomatism that occurred in the lithospheric mantle of the eastern NCC during the Triassic, likely associated with deep subduction of the Yangtze block, might have played a significant role in promoting lithospheric thinning and mafic magmatism in the late Mesozoic.

Lithospheric mantle as a metal storage reservoir for orogenic gold deposits in active continental margins: Evidence from Hg isotopes

The subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) is now suggested by many workers to play a role in the formation of orogenic gold deposits in active continental margins, given that the gold and volatiles may be introduced into the SCLM during plate subduction. The giant Cretaceous Jiaodong gold province within the North China block occurs in a convergent margin setting where there is no terrane accretion, thus eliminating from consideration the commonly accepted metal and fluid source reservoir for orogenic gold—the metamorphosed upper crust of an active orogenic belt. Thus, the auriferous fluids were released below the high-grade Archean cratonic rocks from either enriched SCLM or directly from the subducted oceanic slab. Mercury (Hg) isotopes allow fingerprinting of isotopically distinct reservoirs, discriminating between the two possibilities. We present Hg isotope data for a set of pyrite grains, native gold, and lamprophyres from six main gold districts in the Jiaodong gold province. These samples dominantly yielded near-zero Δ199Hg (0‰ ± 0.1‰), within uncertainty of the mantle Δ199Hg value. The results provide novel evidence that the SCLM predominantly controlled the Hg budget of the Jiaodong gold deposits, implying that the SCLM acted as a buffer for the crustal mass-independent fractionation Hg signatures and a storage reservoir for gold and volatiles. Consequently, during slab subduction, gold and volatiles were recycled and stored within the SCLM and were later released from the mantle during uplift and relaxation of compressional tectonics.

Petrogenetic and geochemical constraints on ca. 1.89–1.88 Ga Bastanar mafic dyke swarm, Bastar craton, India: Insights into MORB- and OIB-type contributions and interactions with metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle

The Bastar craton of the Indian Shield hosts several generations of mafic dyke swarms of various trends, compositions, and ages, which span from ca. 2.7 Ga to 1.42 Ga. This study focuses on geochemical attributes of the ca. 1.89–1.88 Ga NNW-trending Bastanar swarm, aiming to address a perceived discrepancy between its arc-like geochemistry and the influence of a heterogeneous mantle source. To resolve the intra-swarm geochemical variations, we conducted a comprehensive geochemical characterization and petrogenetic interpretation of the ca. 1.89–1.88 Ga Bastanar swarm. The samples from this swarm are categorized into two distinct groups, primarily based on their geochemical composition. The Group 1 samples exhibit higher TiO2 (1.06–1.86 wt%), (La/Yb)N (7.2–8.6), (Gd/Yb)N (2- 2.27), Nb (14.6–16.6 ppm), Th (1.23–3.03 ppm) and Zr (104–118.72 ppm) concentrations than the Group 2 samples. Furthermore, rare-earth element patterns and variations in high-field strength element contents in the Group 1 samples suggest derivation from a deeper, less depleted mantle source resembling an OIB/less MORB-type. This inference is further supported by higher TiO2/Yb, Zr/Nb, and Nb/Y ratios. In contrast, the Group 2 samples indicate derivation from a shallower, more MORB/less OIB-type depleted mantle source, as evidenced by lower TiO2/Yb, Zr/Nb, and Nb/Y ratios. Variations in Dy/Yb and Gd/Yb ratios confirm the involvement of variable mantle sources, implying the derivation of the Group 1 and 2 samples from garnet-rich and spinel-rich lherzolite mantle sources, respectively. The absence of consistent negative Nb-Ta-Ti anomalies in the Group 1 samples suggests an uncontaminated nature, ruling out any role of crustal contamination. On the other hand, the Group 2 samples display negative Nb-Ta-Ti anomalies with enriched LREE and LILE patterns, indicating the involvement of crustal components in their genesis. A trace-element modelling suggests that the ca. 1.89–1.88 Ga mafic dyke swarm exhibits significant intra-swarm variability, with at least two distinct source components contributing to its genesis – a depleted MORB-type and an enriched OIB-type mantle. Notably, the geochemical characteristics of the Group 2 samples suggest interaction with a metasomatized mantle source, possibly enriched by fluids from an earlier subducted slab. Geochemical evidence presented in this work supports Archean subduction-related processes for the crustal growth of the Bastar craton and highlight the enduring influence of a metasomatized sub-continental lithospheric mantle on subsequent magmatism over millions of years.

Petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the mafic rocks from the Mfengou-Manki area, Central Cameroon Shear Zone: constraints from petrology and bulk-rock geochemistry

In the Central Cameroon Shear Zone, several studies were focused on granitoids and very few on mafic rocks. Here we report the petrography, geochemistry and mineralogy of the Mfengou-Manki mafic rocks in order to constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic settings and the role of lithospheric and asthenospheric mantle sources in their genesis. The studied mafic rocks are subdivided into columnar jointed basalts and mafic dykes. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry indicates that the mafic dykes crystallized at a temperature of 1071 to 1193 °C and a pressure of 4 to 12 kbar while the columnar jointed basalts emplaced at a temperature of 1064 to 1152 °C and 2 to 13 kbar pressure. The mafic dykes and columnar jointed basalts present high La/Sm, Sm/Yb, Nb/Yb and Th/Yb ratios, indicating garnet to spinel transition zone mantle source. The multi-element diagram of the mafic dykes display enrichment in Nb, Ta, Pb and Ti and depletion in Th, U, Ce and Zr compared to that of the columnar jointed basalts (slight depletion in Nb and Ta and pronounced depletion in U, Pb and Zr and enrichment in Cs, Ba and Rb) indicating the little involvement of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle to the formation of the columnar jointed basalts. The Nb/La ratio > 1 for the mafic dykes and < 1 for the columnar jointed basalts also suggest the derivation of the mafic dykes from the asthenospheric mantle and the columnar jointed basalts from the mixed lithospheric-asthenospheric mantle due to the sub-continental lithospheric mantle delamination under the Central Cameroon Shear Zone.

Diffusion-induced lithium isotopic heterogeneity in olivines from peridotites of an oceanized mantle lithosphere at the Yunzhug ophiolite (central Tibet)

This paper reports lithium concentrations and isotopic compositions of olivines in the oceanized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) peridotites of the Tibetan Yunzhug ophiolite. The results show systematic Li isotope changes with distance from the rim of olivine grains. δ7Li values of olivine in dunites decrease from + 10.46 to + 1.33‰ with increasing distance to olivine rim from 26.15 to 124.71 μm. A negative correlation of δ7Li and Li content in olivine from dunite and harzburgite indicates recent diffusive ingress of Li into the peridotites. The extremely heavy Li isotopic composition requires the seawater or seawater alteration endmember in the mixing model, and reveals Li diffusion from seawater into olivine. As in dunites, olivines in a harzburgite sample show similar variations in δ7Li as a function of distance from the grain rim (e.g., 6.01 to 1.73 in sample 14YZ13). We suggest that the behavior of Li in the oceanized SCLM peridotites may be controlled by Li diffusion from seawater, as Li activity in the liquid state is higher than the solid state in transporting Li through the olivines in the peridotites. This study supports that seawater Li diffusion is one of the important factors for the heterogeneity of mantle Li isotopes in ophiolites.

Geology, fluid inclusions, mineral and (S-O) isotope chemistry of the Badran orogenic Au deposit, Yana-Kolyma belt, eastern Siberia: implications for ore genesis

The Badran orogenic gold deposit is located in the Yana-Kolyma belt, Eastern Siberia; it has proven reserves of ∼9.3 t of gold and an average grade of 7.8 ppm. The total gold production at the Badran deposit since 1984 amounts to ∼34 t. Despite many years of study, the origin of the gold deposits of the Yana-Kolyma metallogenic belt, one of the world’s largest belts, and the Badran deposit is controversial. Synthesis of regional geology and geology of the Badran deposit, fluid inclusion analysis, mineral and (S-O) isotope chemistry defines the genetic model, origin of fluids, and source of metals in the evolution of the ore-forming system, equivalent to other orogenic gold deposits on the margin of the Siberian craton. The deposit is localized in the Upper Triassic clastic rocks and is controlled by the NW-trending thrust. Polyphase mineralization occurs as disseminated arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite ores with invisible gold, quartz veins with native gold and Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu sulfides and sulfosalts of orogenic type, and locally post-ore Ag, Sb-bearing minerals and Hg epithermal features. The quartz veins with native gold were formed from low-medium saline (1.5–10 wt% NaCl eq.) aqueous-carbonic fluids boiling at temperatures of 290°C to 210 °C and pressures of 300–250 to 125 bar. The δ34S values of pyrite and arsenopyrite vary from −1.1‰ to +2.4‰, with an average of +0.4‰; the δ18О of quartz from +15.1‰ to +17.5‰ at constant δ18ОH2O about +7.5‰ (±1.0‰). High contents of As (up to 2.4 wt%) and Co/Ni ∼ from 0.3 to 9.9 in pyrite of proximal alteration are typical for hydrothermal systems. The results obtained confirm that the ore-forming fluids did not have a single origin, but were formed from a mixture of subcontinental lithospheric mantle and metamorphic sources. The subcrustal lithospheric mantle was fertilized in the time preceding mineralization (Late Jurassic) and was derived directly from the down-going subduction slab and overlying sediment wedge at the closure of the Oymyakon Ocean.

Subduction polarity reversal facilitated by plate coupling during arc-continent collision: Evidence from the Western Kunlun orogenic belt, northwest Tibetan Plateau

Abstract Subduction polarity reversal usually involves the break off or tearing of the downgoing plate (DP) along the continent-ocean transition zone, in order to initiate subduction of the overriding plate (OP) with opposite polarity. We propose that subduction polarity reversal can also be caused by DP-OP coupling and can account for the early Paleozoic geological relationships in the Western Kunlun orogenic belt in the northwestern Tibetan Plateau. Our synthesis of elemental and isotopic data reveals transient (~2 m.y.) changes in the sources of early Paleozoic arc magmatism in the southern Kunlun terrane. The early-stage (ca. 530–487 Ma) magmatic rocks display relatively high εNd(t) (+0.3 to +8.7), εHf(t) (−3.6 to +16.0), and intra-oceanic arc-like features. In contrast, the late-stage (485–430 Ma) magmatic rocks have predominantly negative εNd(t) (−4.5 to +0.3), εHf(t) (−8.8 to +0.9), and higher incompatible trace elements (e.g., Th), similar to the sub-continental lithospheric mantle beneath the Tarim craton. This abrupt temporal-spatial variation of arc magmatism, together with the detrital zircon evidence, indicate that subduction polarity reversal of the Proto-Tethys Ocean occurred in a period of ~10 m.y., consistent with the time interval reflected by ophiolite age. This rapid polarity reversal corresponds with the absence of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic and post-collisional magmatic rocks, features normally characteristic of slab break-off or tearing. Numerical modeling shows that this polarity reversal was caused by plate coupling during arc-continent collision. This coupling modified the normal succession of arc-continent collision events, preventing slab break-off or tearing-induced buoyant rock rebound and asthenosphere upwelling. Our model successfully explains early Paleozoic orogenesis in the Western Kunlun orogenic belt and may be applied elsewhere where post-collisional magmatic and UHP rocks are absent.

Plume-lithosphere interaction in the Comei Large Igneous Province: Evidence from two types of mafic dykes in Gyangze, south Tibet, China

Two suites of mafic dykes, T1193-A and T1194-A, outcrop in Gyangze area, southeast Tibet. They are in the area of Comei LIP and have indistinguishable field occurrences with two other dykes in Gyangze, T0902 dyke with 137.7±1.3 Ma zircon age and T0907 dyke with 142±1.4 Ma zircon age reported by Wang YY et al. (2016), indicating coeval formation time. Taking all the four diabase dykes into consideration, two different types, OIB-type and weak enriched-type, can be summarized. The “OIB-type” samples, including T1193-A and T0907 dykes, show OIB-like geochemical features and have initial Sr-Nd isotopic values similar with most mafic products in Comei Large Igneous Provinces (LIP), suggesting that they represent melts directly generated from the Kerguelen mantle plume. The “weak enriched-type ” samples, including T1194-A and T0902 dykes, have REEs and trace element patterns showing within-plate affinity but have obvious Nb-Ta-Ti negative anomalies. They show uniform lower εNd(t) values (–6––2) and higher 87Sr/86Sr(t) values (0.706–0.709) independent of their MgO variation, indicating one enriched mantle source. Considering their closely spatial and temporal relationship with the widespread Comei LIP magmatic products in Tethyan Himalaya, these “weak enriched-type” samples are consistent with mixing of melts from mantle plume and the above ancient Tethyan Himalaya subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) in different proportions. These weak enriched mafic rocks in Comei LIP form one special rock group and most likely suggest large scale hot mantle plume-continental lithosphere interaction. This process may lead to strong modification of the Tethyan Himalaya lithosphere in the Early Cretaceous.©2024 China Geology Editorial Office.
