Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections in Shanghai, China: Surveillance from 2014 to 2023.

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis remains a notable health problem in developing countries. In 1990 in Shanghai, a city in eastern China, 47% of the population was affected. Due to a series of comprehensive approaches, the prevalence decreased to 0.5% in 2009. We collected 10-year surveillance data to assess the epidemic situation of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in Shanghai. Stool samples and questionnaires from participants were collected. The Kato-Katz technique was used to detect infections with Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), and Trichuris trichiura. From 2014 to 2023, a total of 77,685 participants were screened for parasitic infections, and the overall prevalence of STH infections decreased from 0.1% to 0% in Shanghai. Of 77,685 participants, 25 (0.03%) were positive for intestinal helminths, with the most common parasite being A. lumbricoides (72.0%). Generally, elderly participants from rural areas with lower education levels were more likely to be infected with STHs. A total of 2,914 questionnaires were collected, and most respondents (72.6%) had good knowledge about the transmission routes of STHs. However, 12.3% of participants did not know the damage to health caused by STHs, and 19.3% had no idea of how to prevent infection. These data demonstrate the current state of STH infections in Shanghai. The results suggest that various comprehensive measures should be encouraged, continuously implemented, and strengthened accordingly so that STH elimination can be integrated into the Healthy China initiative by 2030.

Soil-transmitted helminths and associated factors among pregnant women in Doreni district, Oromia region, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundSoil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) refers to a set of parasitic illnesses caused by nematode worms and spread to people through faeces-contaminated soil. It is highly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries due to a lack of environmental sanitation and personal hygiene. Pregnant women are among the risk groups for infection by soil-transmitted helminths. Former studies of the disease burden among pregnant women in Ethiopia didn’t indicate the intensity of parasitic infection. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of soil-transmitted helminths among pregnant women.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 416 randomly selected pregnant women. The data were collected using a structured interview-administered questionnaire and a laboratory test. The Kato-Katz technique was used to diagnose soil-transmitted helminthiasis and determine the intensity of the infection. The collected data were entered into Epi-Data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of soil-transmitted helminths at a p-value < 0.05.ResultsThe overall prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths among pregnant women was 30%. (95%, CI: 26-34%). Living in a rural area (AOR = 3.35; 95% CI = 1.83–6.13), drinking from an unprotected water source (AOR = 2.52; 95% CI = 1.45–4.37), not washing one’s hand after the toilet (AOR = 2.75; 95% CI = 1.55–4.88), lacking health information (AOR = 1.70; 95% CI = 1.01–2.85), working as a daily labourer (AOR = 2.88; 95% CI = 1.01–8.20), and walking barefoot (AOR = 4.00; 95% CI = 2.29–7.00) were significantly associated with the presence of soil-transmitted helminths among pregnant women.ConclusionThe prevalence of STH was significantly moderate in the study area, where pregnant women were mostly affected by ascariasis and hookworms. Living in a rural area, being a daily labourer, walking barefoot, not washing hands after the toilet, drinking from an unprotected water source, and lacking health information were the determining factors. Interventions including health education, the expansion of pure drinking water sources, the promotion of personal hygiene, and the wearing of shoes are recommended to reduce the burden of soil-transmitted helminths in the study area.

A Mixed-Methods Evaluation of Mainstreaming Mass Drug Administration for Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in Four Districts of Nigeria.

In Nigeria, mass drug administration (MDA) for schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) has often been coordinated with other programs that receive greater external funding. As these programs reach stop MDA milestones, SCH and STH programs will likely need to transition implementation, or "mainstream," to domestic support. A mixed-methods study was conducted in four districts before (2021) and after (2022) mainstreaming to evaluate its impact on MDA coverage. Household surveys were done in 30 villages per district pre- and post-mainstreaming. All selected communities were eligible for STH treatment; around a third were eligible for SCH treatment. Mass drug administration was primarily conducted in schools. A total of 5,441 school-aged children were included in pre-mainstreaming and 5,789 were included in post-mainstreaming. Mass drug administration coverage was heterogeneous, but overall, mebendazole coverage declined nonsignificantly from 81% pre-mainstreaming to 76% post-mainstreaming (P = 0.09); praziquantel coverage declined significantly from 73% to 55% (P = 0.008). Coverage was significantly lower among unenrolled children or those reporting poor school attendance in nearly every survey. For the qualitative component, 173 interviews and 74 focus groups were conducted with diverse stakeholders. Respondents were deeply pessimistic about the future of MDA after mainstreaming and strongly supported a gradual transition to full government ownership. Participants formulated recommendations for effective mainstreaming: clear budgetallocation by governments, robust and targeted training, trust building, and comprehensive advocacy. Although participants lacked confidence that SCH and STH programs could be sustained after reductions in external support, initial results indicate that MDA coverage can remain high 1 year into mainstreaming.

Management of paediatric soil-transmitted helminthiasis in a non-endemic area: experience in a reference international health unit.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections inflict disability worldwide, especially in the poorest communities. Current therapeutic options against STHs show limited efficacy, particularly against Trichuris trichiura. The empirical management of patients coming from high-prevalence areas has been suggested for non-endemic areas. This study aimed to describe the management of STH infections in a non-endemic setting using an individualised approach. We performed a retrospective, descriptive study of all patients up to 16years of age with STH infections attended at an international health unit in a non-endemic area (2014-2018), including all T. trichiura, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Ascaris lumbricoides infections diagnosed using a formol-ether concentration technique and direct visualisation. Patients were treated according to current international guidelines. Sixty-one stool samples from 48 patients testing positive for STHs were collected, with 96% (46/48) reporting a previous long-term stay in endemic areas. Cure rates with 3-day benzimidazole regimens were 72% for T. trichiura, 40% for hookworms, and 83% for A. lumbricoides. The results were not influenced by any reinfection risk due to the study being performed in a non-endemic area. Patients coming from STH-endemic areas should be evaluated with appropriate diagnostic tools and followed up until cure control results. Cure rates in our cohort were moderate to low, similar to those published in studies in endemic areas. The efficacy of current treatment options is insufficient to recommend a specific empirical approach in high-income countries' healthcare systems.

Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis Among School-Aged Children in Selected Primary Schools in Southwest Nigeria: A Cross-sectional Study

This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and intensity of infection of soil-transmitted helminths among school-aged children in Ife Central and Ife East Local Government Areas, Osun State, Nigeria, and the level of awareness of the school children on the disease. Fresh stool samples were collected from 324 pupils, comprising 162 males and 162 females (aged 5-12 years), from March to June 2021 and were preserved in 2 ml of 10% formalin. The preserved fecal samples were processed using a modified Kato-Katz technique.  Of the 324 fecal samples examined, 79 (24.4%) tested positive for helminth eggs. The eggs were identified as Ascaris lumbricoides, with a prevalence of 22.2%, and hookworm with a prevalence of 3.7%. Double infections were observed in 5 (1.5%) pupils. Private schools had a slightly higher prevalence (24.7%) than did public schools (24.1%). Sex-related prevalence was higher among males (25.9%) than females (22.8%), and no significant difference existed in the prevalence level between the sexes (p &gt; 0.05). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. This study concluded that STH infection remains a public health risk among children in the study area. 

Trichuris trichiura infection is associated with changes in gut microbiome composition and function among women of reproductive age from Pemba, Tanzania

Large intestine-dwelling helminths affect microbiome composition. In sub-Saharan Africa, where helminth infections are endemic, the use of chemotherapeutic drugs is the primary strategy for controlling soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs). However, the emergence of anthelmintic resistance necessitates the urgent exploration of alternative and complementary treatments to achieve the World Health Organization’s goal of eliminating STHs. One promising avenue involves the manipulation of gut microbiota in at-risk populations. This study aimed to enhance the understanding of the interplay between Trichuris trichiura and the gut microbiome. In this study, we used the Mini-FLOTAC technique for parasitological analyses and a shotgun metagenomic sequencing approach to investigate the effect of T. trichiura on the gut microbiome by comparing infected and non-infected women of reproductive age (WRA) from Pemba. Structural and functional analyses of the gut microbiome revealed that T. trichiura infection shaped the host gut microbiome in WRA. Some taxa vary according to infection status. Prevotella genus was more abundant in healthy participants, whereas species such as Weissella cibaria, Leuconostoc citreum (new emergent probiotics), and Leuconostoc lactis (starter) decreased in infected individuals, suggesting the use of potential probiotic treatments to mitigate dysbiosis induced by STHs. Furthermore, the overall number of common fungi, irrespective of species, was significantly higher in the mycobiome of Trichuris infected participants. Functional analysis revealed significant differences in metabolic pathways (p &amp;lt; 0.05), with cholesterol metabolism and pathogenic infections being more abundant in the infected samples than in the non-infected samples. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the intricate interactions between helminth infections and the gut microbiome in the WRA, particularly in STH-endemic regions. The identified associations between specific gut microbial changes and T. trichiura infection may pave the way for innovative complementary treatments to effectively combat STHs.

Prevalence and intensity of urinary schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths among women of reproductive age in Mwaluphamba, Kwale

Objective: To assess the epidemiology of urinary schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis among women of reproductive age in Mwaluphamba, Kwale County, Kenya. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study design was employed to randomly sample 422 women of reproductive age (15-&lt;50 years) from four villages in Mwaluphamba location. Stool specimens were collected and examined using the Kato-Katz method, while filtration technique was used to analyze urine specimens. Participants’ sociodemographic details were obtained using a standardized questionnaire. Results: Urinary schistosomiasis prevalence was at 4.7% (20/422, 95% CI 2.8%-6.9%) while the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis infection was 4.5% (19/422, 95% CI 2.6%-6.7%). The infection intensities of urinary schistosomiasis among the study participants ranged from 1 to 120 eggs/10 mL of urine with median egg count of 18.45 eggs/10 mL. The patients were diagnosed with light infection, of 56.16 egg/gram and 48.48 egg/gram for Trichuris trichiura and hookworms, respectively. Women without latrines had 15.7 times higher risk of having urinary schistosomiasis compared to those with a latrine. Similarly, use of surface water (aOR=1.0, 95% CI 0.2-1.4, P=0.010) and crossing the river to go to a place (aOR=1.1, 95% CI 0.3-1.6, P=0.009) were statistically significant risk factors for getting urinary schistosomiasis. In bivariable regression analysis, defecating around the water source (OR=4.3, 95% CI 1.5-12.9) had a statistically significant association with the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (P=0.008). Conclusions: This study has given an insight on the prevalence and intensity of urinary schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Mwaluphamba location that form a basis for strengthening the control and elimination programmes for these neglected tropical diseases.

Prevalence of Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis and Their Risk Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study in Itilima District, North-Western Tanzania.

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis remain a public health concern in Tanzania. This study investigated the prevalence and intensities of Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni, and soil-transmitted helminths and associated factors in Itilima district, north-western Tanzania. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2020 among 3779 primary schoolchildren in 62 primary schools and 1122 adults in 19 villages. Urine samples were obtained from each participant and examined visually for the presence of macrohaematuria, microhaematuria, and S. haematobium eggs using a urine dipstick and urine filtration test. A single stool sample was obtained from each participant and screened for S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths using the Kato Katz and formalin-ether concentration techniques. A questionnaire was administered to schoolchildren to elucidate the risk factors for schistosomiasis. The overall prevalence of S. haematobium in adults was 8.1% (95% confidence interval (CI), 6.6-9.8%). In total, 3779 schoolchildren had complete results from urine testing, and the overall prevalence of S. haematobium was 10.1% (95% CI, 9.1-11.1%). The prevalence of S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths was relatively low among both children and adults compared to S. haematobium. Factors associated with S. haematobium infection among schoolchildren were the mother's occupation, children aged 11-15 years, and water contact behaviour. The odds of having schistosomiasis infection among children aged 11-15 are 40% higher than those aged 5-10 (95% confidence interval (CI), 10-80%, p = 0.04). Children of parents who are livestock keepers have 12.3 times higher odds of having infection compared to those who have small-scale businesses (95% CI, 1.0-5.4, p = 0.03). Children who are in contact with infested water more than three times a week have 2.1 times higher odds of having an infection compared to those who do not (95% CI, 2.1; 1.6-2.8, p < 0.001). The findings provide updated geographical information on prevalence, yielding insights into the planning and implementation of mass drug administration in rural Tanzania.

Synthesis of findings from the literature and a qualitative research study on the impacts of gender, disability, and ethnicity in Neglected Tropical Diseases programs.

Act to End NTDs | West, a USAID-funded program that supports national governments to eliminate or control five neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in West Africa including trachoma, lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis, conducted a gender and social inclusion analysis to determine how NTDs differentially impact various populations and how gender and social norms impact NTD programs to inform future programming. The study used a mixed methods approach including a literature review; primary qualitative data collection; and monitoring data in Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Ghana. Women and girls face additional health risks from many NTDs compared to men and boys. In addition to differential health burden, the social and economic impacts of NTD-related disability or infertility can be particularly dire for women and girls. Men were somewhat less likely to participate in mass drug administration (MDAs) due to: lack of information about campaigns, lack of access due to work, and higher levels of mistrust of the government and concerns about side effects of the medicines. Pregnant and breastfeeding women were sometimes excluded by community drug distributors (CDDs) from certain types of MDAs for which they are eligible. Training participation rates for CDDs and supervisors were universally higher for men than women, even though feedback on the effectiveness of female CDDs was overwhelmingly positive, and female CDDs often have more access to other women in conservative households. The role of a CDD can lead to career and social opportunities for women. However, challenges faced by CDDs were seen as a greater barrier for women, including transportation, safety, household responsibilities, lower education levels, and low or lack of wages. Programs to address NTDs can promote equity and improve programming by increasing women's participation as CDDs and providing financial compensation. Additionally, programs should prioritize inclusive training for CDDs, and inclusive messaging about MDA for communities.

Cross-Sectional Study of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases in Black Belt Region of Alabama, USA.

We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) in areas of rural Alabama, USA, that have sanitation deficits. We enrolled 777 children; 704 submitted stool specimens and 227 a dried blood spot sample. We microscopically examined stool specimens from all 704 children by using Mini-FLOTAC for helminth eggs. We tested a subset by using molecular techniques: real-time PCR analysis for 5 STH species, TaqMan Array Cards for enteric helminths, and digital PCR for Necator americanus hookworm. We analyzed dried blood spots for Strongyloides stercoralis and Toxocara spp. roundworms by using serologic testing. Despite 12% of our cohort reporting living in homes that directly discharge untreated domestic wastewater, stool testing for STH was negative; however, 5% of dried blood spots were positive for Toxocara spp. roundworms. Survey data suggests substantial numbers of children in this region may be exposed to raw sewage, which is itself a major public health concern.

Distribution and treatment needs of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Bangladesh: A Bayesian geostatistical analysis of 2017-2020 national survey data.

In Bangladesh, preventive chemotherapy targeting soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in school-age children has been implemented since 2008. To evaluate the success of this strategy, surveys were conducted between 2017 and 2020 in 10 out of 64 districts. We estimate the geographic distribution of STH infections by species at high spatial resolution, identify risk factors, and estimate treatment needs at different population subgroups. Bayesian geostatistical models were fitted to prevalence data of each STH species. Climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic predictors were extracted from satellite images, open-access, model-based databases, and demographic household surveys, and used to predict the prevalence of infection over a gridded surface at 1 x 1 km spatial resolution across the country, via Bayesian kriging. These estimates were combined with gridded population data to estimate the number of required treatments for different risk groups. The population-adjusted prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm across all ages is estimated at 9.9% (95% Bayesian credible interval: 8.0-13.0%), 4.3% (3.0-7.3%), and 0.6% (0.4-0.9%), respectively. There were 24 out of 64 districts with an estimated population-adjusted STH infection prevalence above 20%. The proportion of households with improved sanitation showed a statistically important, protective association for both, A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura prevalence. Precipitation in the driest month of the year was negatively associated with A. lumbricoides prevalence. High organic carbon concentration in the soil's fine earth fraction was related to a high hookworm prevalence. Furthermore, we estimated that 30.5 (27.2; 36.0) million dosages of anthelmintic treatments for school-age children were required per year in Bangladesh. For each of the STH species, the prevalence was reduced by at least 80% since treatment was scaled up more than a decade ago. The current number of deworming dosages could be reduced by up to 61% if the treatment strategy was adapted to the local prevalence.

Worm Infections (Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis) in Elementary School Students

Environmental sanitation factors and human behavior factors are factors that greatly influence the occurrence of worm disease. The high incidence of worms is caused by environmental factors or demographic conditions in an area and is also influenced by community behavior. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of worms in elementary school students in Manggala District, Makassar City. This type of research is observational analytic with a cross-sectional study design. The population in this study were elementary school children in grades IV, V, and VI who attended SD Komplek Inpres, SD Perumnas Antang II, Manggala District, Makassar City, with a total sample of 61 samples. Sampling used the Systematic Random Sampling technique. This research found that 29.5% of elementary school students were positively infected, where Ascaris lumbricoides and Tricuris trichiura were the main infections. The results of the analysis showed that hand washing behavior (p=0.003), nail cleanliness (p=0.031), and clean water facilities (p=0.001) were significantly related to the incidence of worm infections in elementary school students, and the variable clean water facilities were the variable that most dominant in the incidence of worms in elementary school students.

Zinc status or supplementation and its relation to soil-transmitted helminthiasis in children: A systematic review.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) parasitic infection is known as one of the most common infections around the world affecting more than a quarter of the world's population. The relationship between STH infections and micronutrient deficiencies are closely related and often coexist among the affected population. The study, therefore, aimed to summarise the available literature focusing on the effect of zinc status/deficiency or supplementation on STH infection or reinfection in children. For this purpose, we adopted a systematic approach and searched the existing literature on PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases. A search term was entered to retrieve the available data. A total of 12 articles were included in this review after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Most of the included studies reported a lower zinc status in children affected with any parasitic infection. Regarding the effect of zinc status and supplementation on parasitic infection in children, we found only a few studies (n = 4) with inconsistent result findings. This review reported that children infected with STH have lower zinc levels; however, a limited number of studies showed the effect of zinc supplements on the risk of STH warrants the need for further studies in this regard.

Key Contributions by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Towards New and Better Drugs for Tropical Diseases.

Thanks to its expertise in clinical research, epidemiology, infectious diseases, microbiology, parasitology, public health, translational research and tropical medicine, coupled with deeply rooted partnerships with institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) has been a key contributor in many drug research and development consortia involving academia, pharma and product development partnerships. Our know-how of the maintenance of parasites and their life-cycles in the laboratory, plus our strong ties to research centres and disease control programme managers in LMICs with access to field sites and laboratories, have enabled systems for drug efficacy testing in vitro and in vivo, clinical research, and modelling to support the experimental approaches. Thus, Swiss TPH has made fundamental contributions towards the development of new drugs - and the better use of old drugs - for neglected tropical diseases and infectious diseases of poverty, such as Buruli ulcer, Chagas disease, food-borne trematodiasis (e.g. clonorchiasis, fascioliasis and opisthorchiasis), human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, malaria, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and tuberculosis. In this article, we show case the success stories of molecules to which Swiss TPH has made a substantial contribution regarding their use as anti-infective compounds with the ultimate aim to improve people's health and well-being.

Assessment of the capacity of Whatman filter papers as support to store stools for the molecular diagnostic testing of soil-transmitted helminthiasis

Storage of stools for the detection of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remains challenging for the molecular diagnostic testing of STH infections. This study aimed to overcome this challenge by assessing the capacity of Whatman filter papers to store stools for the molecular detection of STHs. Stool samples were collected from school-aged children of soil-transmitted helminthiasis endemic areas of Cameroon and then, analysed using Kato Katz technique. For this study, 128 and 40 stool samples respectively with and without STH eggs were analysed. From each sample, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg of stool were weighted and spread on 6 grades of Whatman filter papers that were stored at room temperature from one to ten weeks. DNA was extracted from spread stool using CTAB based-method. The amount of stool to spread on filter papers and the grade of filter paper offering good storage were determined by amplifying specific DNA fragments of Ascaris lumbricoides. The capacity of filter papers to store stool samples for several weeks before the molecular detection of STH species was assessed by amplifying specific DNA fragments of different STHs. The amplification rates of A. lumbricoides were significantly higher (P < 0.0001) for 10 and 20 mg of stored stools. Stools spread on Whatman paper grade 2 yielded the highest amplification rate of 100% for A. lumbricoides, T. trichiura and hookworm. PCR revealed STH infections in all the 128 spread stools carrying STH eggs. It also revealed Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale respectively in 10 and 13 of 15 spread stools contained hookworm eggs. PCR confirmed the co-infections of these hookworm species as well as that of A. lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura in 7 spread stools. Out of 40 stools without STH eggs, PCR revealed that 5 (12.5%) and 9 (22.5%) had respectively A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura infections. The amplification rate of each STH species was 100% from one to 8 weeks and decreased to 86.7% after 10 weeks of storage. This study highlighted the capacity of filter papers to store stools for the molecular detection of STHs. Storing stools on these papers will enable to monitor and evaluate control programs and ensure post-elimination surveillance.

Lymphatic filariases and soil-transmitted helminthiases in Sri Lanka: the challenge of eliminating residual pockets of transmission.

Sri Lanka has successfully met the challenge of controlling both lymphatic filariasis (LF) and soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) as public health problems. The primary public health strategy for combatting both conditions has been preventive chemotherapy. The national programme for the elimination of LF implemented five annual rounds of mass chemotherapy in the endemic districts from 2002 to 2006 using a combination of diethylcarbamazine and albendazole. The overall microfilaria rate declined from 0.21% in 2001 before the mass chemotherapy, to 0.06% in 2016, at declaration of elimination of LF as a public health problem by the World Health Organization. Currently Sri Lanka is in the phase of post-validation surveillance. Achieving control of STH has been more difficult. Mass deworming programmes have been implemented for nearly a century, and national-level surveys reported prevalence rates declining from 6.9% in 2003 to 1% in 2017. However, neither of these infections has been completely eliminated. A situation analysis indicates continued transmission of both among high-risk communities. This paper explores the reasons for persistence of transmission of both LF and STH in residual pockets and the measures that are required to achieve long-term control, or perhaps even interrupt transmission in Sri Lanka. To investigate the relationship between the prevalence of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis with variables related to access to water, sanitation and solid waste in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. A systematic review was performed in the LILACS, PubMed, Web of Science, and SciELO databases. Studies published between 1950 and August 2021, with an ecological design and a focus on population groups (states, municipalities and/or districts), having the prevalence of infection by Schistosoma mansoni, Ancylostoma sp., Necator americanus, Ascaris lumbricoides or Trichuris trichiura as primary variable and access to water, sewage and/or solid waste as explanatory variables were included. Open access articles with full text available in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were considered. The risk of bias and the quality of the studies were assessed according to the Joanna Briggs Institute manual. Of 2 714 articles, nine were eligible, published between 1994 and 2021 and covering 22 LAC countries and 14 350 municipalities. All articles had moderate methodological quality. Environmental variables indicated an association between water supply and solid waste collection with schistosomiasis; water supply with ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm; and sewage with ascariasis and hookworm. Except for one article, which had regional coverage for LAC, all the others were developed in Brazil. There is a clear need to expand research on the association between household and collective health conditions and parasitic diseases for all endemic countries in LAC to support environmental strategies to control these diseases.
