Considerations in cultural adaptation of parent-child interventions for African American mothers and children exposed to intimate partner violence.

African American women are at disproportionate risk of experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) and consistently report more severe and recurrent IPV victimization in comparison to their White and Hispanic counterparts. IPV is more likely to occur in families with children than in couples without children. Parenting in the wake of IPV is a challenging reality faced by many African American women in the United States. Despite the urgent need to support mothers who have survived IPV, there is currently no culturally adapted parenting intervention for African American mothers following exposure to IPV. The aim of this review is to summarize and integrate two disparate literatures, hitherto unintegrated; namely the literature base on parenting interventions for women and children exposed to IPV and the literature base on parenting interventions through the lens of African American racial and cultural factors. Our review identified 7 questions that researchers may consider in adapting IPV parenting interventions for African American women and children. These questions are discussed as a possible roadmap for the adaptation of more culturally sensitive IPV parenting programs.

Empowerment Moderates the Relationship Between Partner Abuse and Suicidal Ideation for Immigrant Women.

Research shows strong associations between intimate partner violence (IPV) among women and suicidal ideation but this topic is understudied among immigrant women in abusive relationships in the United States. Empowerment may play a significant role in protecting abused immigrant women from suicidal ideation but has not been studied with quantitative data. The current study used convenience sampling. Immigrant women who experienced IPV were asked about IPV severity, empowerment, and where they were born. Bivariate associations among variables were assessed; empowerment was tested as a moderator of the relationship between IPV and suicidal ideation. The sample comprised 293 immigrant women, with 62.8% reporting suicidal ideation with a significantly greater proportion of women from South America than elsewhere reporting suicidal ideation. Empowerment buffered the effect of IPV on suicidal ideation. Prevalence of suicidal ideation among immigrant women experiencing IPV is concerning. Severity of IPV, region of the world where women were born, and empowerment were all related to suicidal ideation, showing directions for future research. Empowerment nursing interventions are needed to address IPV and resulting mental health problems among immigrant women. [Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, xx(x), xx-xx.].

Examining strength at home couples to prevent intimate partner violence on a military installation: A randomized controlled trial.

In this study, the effectiveness of a couples-based group intervention to prevent intimate partner violence (IPV), Strength at Home Couples (SAH-C), was examined on a military installation relative to a comparison intervention, Supportive Prevention (SP). It was expected that greater reductions in use of physical, psychological, and sexual IPV behaviors, as well as reduced suicidality, would be found among service members and their partners in SAH-C relative to SP. Participants included 138 couples randomized to SAH-C and SP through a clinical controlled trial embedded in a hybrid effectiveness implementation study which took place on a military installation. The Revised Conflict Tactics Scales and Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse were used to measure IPV, and 13 Military Suicide Research Consortium common data elements were used to assess suicidality. Service members randomized to SAH-C evidenced greater reductions based on effect sizes across the assessment time points for all IPV variables, including use of overall physical IPV, severe physical IPV, sexual IPV, psychological IPV, and coercive control IPV relative to those randomized to SP. Partners of service members demonstrated a similar general pattern for reductions in use of IPV, but findings were not as robust as for service members. Both service members and partners demonstrated greater reductions in suicidality based on effect sizes when randomized to SAH-C relative to SP. Findings extend prior work demonstrating the promising effects of SAH-C delivered in the military context and highlight the possible benefits of SAH-C in preventing self-harm thoughts and behaviors. Profiles of Intimate Partner Violence and Their Differential Association With Gender Hostility Among Men Seeking Help

Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated by men has been associated with men’s hostility toward women (HTW). However, no study that has examined HTW has considered every main form of IPV as well as the severity of the acts perpetrated. The purpose of the present study was to identify distinct profiles of IPV perpetration based on the severity of physical, psychological, and sexual IPV and coercive control acts and to examine potential differences in HTW between the resulting profiles in a sample of 969 men seeking help for anger management or domestic violence. In addition, given the association previously found between HTW and IPV perpetration in women, we also investigated whether hostility toward men (HTM) could also be linked to men’s profiles of IPV perpetration. The results of the latent profile analysis suggested four profiles of IPV perpetrators: minor psychological IPV and severe control, severe IPV and control, minor IPV and control, and no/minor psychological IPV. Results also indicated significant differences between the profiles in terms of both HTW and HTM. Specifically, greater HTW was observed among the profiles characterized by the highest proportion of physical IPV perpetration, whereas greater HTM was observed among the profiles characterized by the highest proportions of severe coercive IPV. Findings will contribute to guide intervention strategies tailored to these different subgroups of men.

The Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory: Psychometric Properties and Symptom Comparisons in Women With and Without Brain Injuries Due to Intimate Partner Violence.

This study psychometrically evaluated the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) among women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) and compared symptoms between women with no brain injury history (n = 93) and women with IPV-related brain injury history (n = 112). Women completed the NSI and questionnaires on traumatic brain injury (TBI), hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI-BI), and lifetime IPV history. A four-factor NSI model, including affective, somatosensory, cognitive, and vestibular factors, had the best fit (comparative fit index = 0.970, root mean square error of approximation = 0.064), with strong reliability for the total score (ω = .93) and subscale scores (ω range = .72-.89). In group comparisons, women with IPV-related brain injuries reported greater total, affective, and cognitive symptom severity after adjusting for age and education; however, no group differences were observed after adjusting for IPV severity. When examining lifetime number of brain injuries, HI-BI count was independently predictive of total, cognitive, and vestibular symptom severity after adjusting for age, education, and IPV severity; whereas TBI count did not independently predict any NSI scores after adjusting for these covariates. The NSI had acceptable psychometric properties for measuring neurobehavioral symptoms among women survivors of IPV. The association between HI-BI count and cognitive and vestibular symptoms may indicate the importance of studying repetitive nonfatal strangulation as an injury mechanism in this population.

Intimate Partner Violence and Formal Help-Seeking in Spain: Comparing Experiences of Spanish and Immigrant Women

In Spain, 17.23% of the population is immigrant. In Madrid area, it rises to 20.96%, being Latin American and Romanian origin the most prevalent. Data indicate that intimate partner violence (IPV) is higher in immigrant than in Spanish women, although they seem to make less use of specialized services. This study aims to identify the characteristics of knowledge and use of specialized IPV services and related variables between Spanish, Romanian, and Latin American women with lifetime IPV in Spain. An anonymous, self-administered survey was applied to a stratified sample of residents aged over 16 in Coslada (Madrid, Spain), where there is a large immigrant population (18.78%). Data from 280 women showed higher recognized lifetime IPV for immigrants (62.1%) than for natives (48%) (p < .05). However, not even half (48.7%) of them used any of the services assessed (without significant differences by origin); Romanians showed more judicialized processes. Use of services was related to having children or IPV severity, among other variables. Results point out the need to consider the influence of the context of immigrant women on their help-seeking behavior and increase awareness and training among professionals. Further research is required about the specific needs of women from different countries.

The Exosystem Impact: An Analysis of Male- and Female Physical Intimate Partner Violence Victimization in Heterosexual Relationships.

An increasing body of sociological research explores the complexity of intimate partner violence (IPV) in heterosexual relationships. However, early research in this area concentrated exclusively on male perpetration, thereby necessitating a better understanding of the contexts behind female-perpetrated and bidirectional IPV. Using the two most recent cycles of the Canadian General Social Survey (2014 and 2019), our study employs a multinomial logistic regression model to examine the prevalence and severity of female and male physical IPV victimization among a large sample of married and common-law heterosexual couples. Framing our analysis through one concentric level of Dutton's (1990) nested ecological model, the exosystem, we aim to understand whether these indicators serve as protective markers against severe and nonsevere physical IPV. We investigate the impact of eight exosystem indicators (financial stress, number of children, length of relationship, religiosity, employment, social support, education, and income). Our findings suggest that social support, employment, and household income serve as protective markers against male and female physical IPV victimization. Other protective factors include the length of the relationship and the partner's religiosity for female-perpetrated violence. At the same time, the presence of children in the household reduces the likelihood of male-perpetrated IPV despite being a risk marker for female perpetration. Risk factors for both men and women include education and their partner's employment. Future research should undertake a more in-depth exploration of the impact of exosystem and macrosystem factors on instances of IPV to generate a better understanding of predictive and preventative measures.

Mental Health Conditions and Utilisation of Mental Health Services by Survivors of Physical Intimate Partner Violence in Portugal: Results from the WHO World Mental Health Survey

The aim of this article is to study mental health conditions among survivors of severe physical intimate partner violence (IPV) and their utilisation of mental health services. This study is an integrated part of the World Mental Health Survey Initiative-Portugal, for which data was collected from a nationally representative adult sample using well-validated scales. Logistic regression models were used in the analysis. The most common statistically significant mental health conditions among IPV survivors were suicide ideation, PTSD, major depressive episode, and generalised anxiety disorder. More than one in three survivors developed PTSD. Suicide ideation was likely to occur after first experiencing IPV. Almost a half of survivors received specialised mental health treatment; in most cases, delivered by a psychiatrist. Over 60% addressed their mental health issues consulting general physicians or other healthcare professionals. Those who experienced family violence in childhood had greater odds of also experiencing IPV; survivors of IPV with this experience were more likely to receive mental health treatment. The need to promote greater awareness and competencies of not only mental health professionals but also of general physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide support more effectively to survivors of any type of IPV deserves to be emphasised.

Risk for Severe Intimate Partner Violence in Nairobi's Informal Settlements: Tailoring the Danger Assessment to Kenya.

Understanding the risk for severe intimate partner violence (IPV) can help women and providers assess danger. The validated, widely used Danger Assessment (DA) developed for this purpose has not been tested in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC). We tailored the DA to Nairobi, Kenya, and prospectively evaluated baseline danger against severe IPV at 3-month follow-up. We used data from the myPlan Kenya trial conducted in 3 informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya, from 2017 to 2018. DA items were refined through formative and pilot phases, yielding minor wording modifications. Quantitative analyses prospectively evaluated baseline DA against severe IPV at 3-month follow-up to understand the predictive effect of the (1) original 20-item DA, (2) 16-item Kenya-DA (highest relative risk ratios [RRR] with severe IPV), and (3) 16-item Kenya-DA weighted (weighting based on strength of RRRs). Diagnostic criteria, including C-statistics, sensitivity, specificity, receiver operating characteristic curve, and area under the curve, were examined; logistic regressions quantified the odds of each metric predicting severe IPV at follow-up. The original 20-item DA produced the highest specificity (75.41%) and lowest sensitivity (57.14%), resulting in the overall lowest C-statistic. Compared to the 16-item Kenya-DA, the Kenya-DA weighted produced slightly higher sensitivity (66.67% vs. 64.29%) and specificity (77.05% vs. 72.13%), resulting in the highest C-statistic (0.78 vs. 0.75). All versions successfully predicted severe IPV at 3-month follow-up (original DA: odds ratio [OR]=1.26, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.12, 1.41, P<.001; Kenya-DA: OR=1.33, 95% CI=1.16, 1.53, P<.001; Kenya-DA weighted: OR=1.19, 95% CI=1.10, 1.28, P<.001). Several factors identified as homicide risk factors in other settings were not prospectively associated with severe IPV. Within a high-danger LMIC context, all 3 DA configurations performed well diagnostically. We recommend the 16-item Kenya-DA given the value for simplicity and field implementation, whereas the Kenya-DA weighted can add accuracy for research purposes.

Violence Exposure and Disability in Colombian Female Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: the Mediating Role of Depressive Symptoms

BackgroundViolence is an important public health problem and one of the main causes of deaths worldwide. The mental health consequences of surviving intimate partner violence (IPV) include depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Previous studies have identified that there is a relationship between depression and level of disability in female survivors of IPV. Estimating the direct, indirect or total effect of an exposure on an outcome makes it possible to identify mediating effects between a group of variables. Detecting mediation effects is useful for identifying casual pathways that generate a final outcome and provides a rationale for designing interventions to target the mediator, which in turn positively affects the outcome. The objective was to identify the mediating role of depressive symptoms on the relationship between IPV and disability. MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study of 94 women over the age of 18 who were survivors of IPV by men. They were recruited from two public hospitals in Cali and Tuluá in southwest Colombia. An analysis of casual relationships was performed using structural equation modelling that was made up of: four exogenous observed variables (age, current relationship status [in a relationship or single], level of schooling, and history of an impairment), intermediate endogenous variables (violence and depressive symptoms), and the main endogenous variable (disability). The analyses were carried out in Stata14.2. ResultsThe direct effect of IPV severity on the level of disability was not statistically significant (β=0.09; P=0.63). However, the indirect effect of IPV severity on disability mediated by depressive symptoms was (β=0.39; P<0.01). The total effect of IPV severity on the level of disability was even greater (β=0.48; P=0.01). ConclusionsThis study found a complete mediating role of depressive symptoms on the relationship between the severity of IPV and the level of disability for the female participants in this study. The results of this research contribute to defining strategies to prevent and address intimate partner violence, depressive symptoms and disability in this population.

The role of resilience in the relationship between intimate partner violence severity and ICD-11 CPTSD severity

ABSTRACT Background: Resilience is a modulating factor in the development of PTSD and CPTSD after exposure to traumatic events. However, the relationship between resilience and ICD-11 CPTSD is not adequately understood in survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Objective: The aim of this study is to determine whether resilience has a mediating role in the relationship between severity of violence and severity of CPTSD symptoms. Method: A sample of 202 women IPV survivors completed self-rated questionnaires to assess CPTSD, severity of violence and resilience. Results: Mediation analyses indicated that there was a direct relationship between the severity of violence and the severity of CPTSD symptoms (β = .113, p < .001) and that there was a significantly inverse relationship between levels of resilience and the severity of CPTSD symptoms (β = −.248, p < .001). At the same time, there was no significant relationship between the severity of violence and resilience (β = −.061, p = .254). Conclusions: These findings suggest that resilience does not mediate the relationship between violence severity and CPTSD severity. Directions for future research are discussed.

The Role of Race, Social Support, Empowerment, and Posttraumatic Cognitions in Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Black women experience more frequent and severe intimate partner violence (IPV), but there are mixed findings on their posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. This may be explained by cultural-salient factors which are associated with fewer posttraumatic cognitions. We hypothesized an indirect effect of race on PTSD symptoms via social support, empowerment, and posttraumatic cognitions, serially. Path analysis revealed Black women reported increased social support, which was associated with higher levels of empowerment, which was associated with lower levels of posttraumatic cognitions. Decreased posttraumatic cognitions were associated with less severe PTSD symptoms. Results increase understanding of culturally-salient factors that may impact PTSD symptoms in Black women.

Judging the Severity of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women: The Role of Situational Factors and Respondents’ Characteristics in Public Opinion

Public perceptions of the severity of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) play a crucial role in its prevention. This study examines the impact of multiple factors related to the scenario and respondent characteristics on the perceived severity of IPVAW. To achieve this, a factorial survey design was implemented using a non-probability-based sample in Spain ( N = 1007). The results indicate that 90.3% of respondents rated the scenario as severe. The perceived severity was influenced by both the details of the scenario and the characteristics of the respondents. These findings can inform the design of targeted awareness campaigns.

Disclosure and Help-Seeking Experiences of Sexual and Gender Minority Victims of Intimate Partner Violence: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Sexual and gender minorities assigned female at birth (SGM-AFAB) experience high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV), with negative effects on health and well-being. Disclosure of and help-seeking for IPV can support the well-being of IPV survivors, yet are understudied among SGM-AFAB people. To better understand the IPV disclosure and help-seeking experiences in this population, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 41 SGM-AFAB young adults who experienced physical, sexual, or severe psychological IPV. Qualitative analyses explored to whom SGM-AFAB disclosed IPV, barriers to disclosure/help-seeking, the types of responses received, and perceived helpfulness of responses. Exploratory mixed methods analyses assessed frequency of code endorsement, demographic differences, and associations among codes. Three-quarters of participants disclosed IPV, though rates were lower for sexual and physical than psychological IPV and very few sought help from formal sources. The most common barriers to disclosure were not viewing the IPV as abuse and anticipation of negative responses, often due to stigma; other participants described inability to access formal help and concerns about SGM incompetence in those services. Most actual responses received were considered helpful, including emotional support, labeling the IPV as unhealthy, nonjudgmental listening, actions to stop the IPV, and practical support. Minimizing IPV or criticizing the victim was common unhelpful response; advice to end the relationship was considered helpful and unhelpful. Whereas 92% of friend responses were described as helpful, around half of family (56%) and therapist (62%) responses were helpful. Findings suggest that efforts to increase access to culturally affirmative services and educate SGM youth to recognize IPV in their relationships may help promote help-seeking and well-being among SGM-AFAB IPV survivors.

Post-Concussion Symptoms in Women With Head Injury Due to Intimate Partner Violence.

Limited research has examined the symptom sequelae of head injuries in women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), despite this community being at increased risk for neurotrauma due to partner abuse. The current study compared post-concussion symptom severity between women with and without IPV-related head injuries. Women were recruited from court jurisdictions in Kentucky, USA, after receiving a protective order for partner abuse. The sample included 268 women with no prior head injuries (age: M[standard deviation (SD)] = 31.8[9.8], 77.2% White) and 251 women with lifetime IPV-related head injuries (age: M[SD] = 31.8[9.8], 88.0% White). Women with IPV-related head injuries were slightly older (t = 2.46, p = 0.014) with lower education (χ2 = 5.81, p = 0.016), were more frequently unemployed (χ2 = 9.23, p = 0.002), and had a higher likelihood of residing in a rural setting (χ2 = 30.16, p < 0.001). Women with IPV-related head injuries were also more often White (χ2 = 10.47, p = 0.001), but this group difference was almost entirely related to rural versus urban residence. Women with IPV-related head injuries reported a higher severity of lifetime physical IPV (t = 7.27, p < 0.001, d = 0.64, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [.46, .82]) and sexual IPV (t = 4.65, p < 0.001, d = 0.41 [0.24, 0.59]). A three-factor model of post-concussion symptoms, inclusive of cognitive, physical, and emotional symptoms, fit well (χ2 = 368.99, p < 0.0001, comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.974, Tucker-Lewis index [TLI] = 0.968, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.079 [0.071, 0.087]), and showed evidence for strong measurement invariance across women with and without IPV-related head injuries. The subscale and total scores each had acceptable reliability: cognitive (ω = 0.88 [0.86, 0.90]), physical (ω = 0.74 [0.70, 0.77]), and emotional (ω = 0.88 [0.86, 0.89]), and total score (ω = 0.93 [0.92, 0.95]). Women with IPV-related head injuries reported all individual post-concussion symptoms at a significantly higher frequency, with medium group differences in cognitive (t = 7.57, p < 0.001, d = 0.67 [0.50, 0.85]) and physical symptoms (t = 7.73, p < 0.001, d = 0.68 [0.51, 0.86]) and large group differences in emotional (t = 8.51, p < 0.001, d = 0.75 [0.57, 0.93]) and total symptoms (t = 9.07, p < 0.001, d = 0.80 [0.62, 0.98]). All sociodemographic characteristics were independently associated with post-concussion symptoms, as were physical IPV (total score: r = 0.28 [0.19, 0.35], p < 0.001) and sexual IPV severity (total score: r = 0.22 [0.13, 0.30], p < 0.001). In hierarchical regression analyses, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., age, race/ethnicity, education, unemployment, and rural/urban residence) and physical and sexual IPV severity, IPV-related head injury was independently significant and accounted for significant additional variance when predicting cognitive (ΔR2 = 0.05, p < 0.001), physical (ΔR2 = 0.03, p < 0.001), emotional (ΔR2 = 0.07, p < 0.001), and total symptoms (ΔR2 = 0.06, p < 0.001). Negative-binomial regression resulted in similar findings. This study demonstrates that multiple sociodemographic and IPV history variables are related to post-concussion symptom severity, but IPV-related head injury was independently associated with greater symptom severity. Women with IPV-related head injuries may be at increased risk for unaddressed health problems spanning cognitive, physical, and emotional domains. Future research is needed to psychometrically evaluate assessment instruments for this population and to assess efficacy of interventions to address their unique health care needs.

A - 137 Head Injury Due to Intimate Partner Violence: Pain Severity and Interference.

This study examined pain severity and interference in women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) with and without head injuries (HIs), including women with IPV-related and non-IPV-related HIs. Hypotheses were (1) women with IPV-related HIs would report greater pain severity than women without HIs, but comparable severity to women with non-IPV-related HIs, and (2) women with IPV-related HIs would report greater pain interference than women without HIs and women with non-IPV-related HIs. Among women IPV survivors, 268 reported no HIs (M(age) = 30.9 ± 9.8years-old, 77.2% White), 113 reported non-IPV-related HIs (M = 31.5 ± 9.2, 88.5% White), and 251 reported IPV-related HIs (M = 32.9 ± 8.9; 88.0% White). Participants reported pain severity and interference in past week. Women with IPV-related HIs reported higher pain severity than women without HIs (p < 0.001, d = 0.49 [95% CI: 0.32, 0.66]), but comparable severity to women with non-IPV-related HIs (p = 0.233, d = 0.24 [0.02, 0.46]). Women with IPV-related HIs reported more pain interference than women without HIs (p < 0.001, d = 0.60 [0.42, 0.77]) and women with non-IPV-related HIs (p = 0.017, d = 0.34 [0.12, 0.56]); however, after controlling for covariates (demographics, physical/sexual violence), the HI groups reported similar pain interference (p = 1.00). Women with IPV-related HIs reported the highest pain severity and interference, although this difference became non-significant after controlling for lifetime IPV severity. Pain interference among women with IPV-related HIs may be related to more severe physical violence, coercive control, and emotional trauma.

Head Injury Due to Intimate Partner Violence: Injury Characteristics, Subacute Symptoms, and Receipt of Care.

Women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) have increased risk of repetitive neurotrauma in their lifetime but have received less research focus compared with populations of athletes, veterans, and emergency department patients. The current study examined the importance of IPV as a contextual mechanism of injury, by comparing women survivors of IPV based on whether they experienced a head injury due to IPV or a head injury not due to IPV. The analyses involved archival data from in-person interviews conducted with women who received a protective order against an intimate partner in Kentucky from 2001 to 2004 (n = 641). Women were excluded if they reported no head injury history (n = 268), resulting in two groups compared based on a retrospective cohort design: 255 women with at least one self-reported IPV-related head injury (M = 33.8 ± 9.0 years old, range: 19-65; 87.5% White) and 118 women with self-reported head injuries due to reasons other than IPV (M = 32.2 ± 9.1 years old, range: 18-62; 89.0% White). Participants were compared on injury characteristics, lifetime physical and sexual IPV severity, subacute symptoms of head injury, and receipt of care for head injury. Compared with women with head injuries unrelated to IPV, women with IPV-related head injuries reported a higher number of lifetime head injuries (Mdn[range]: IPV-related = 3[1-515] vs. non-IPV-related = 1[1-13], p < 0.001, r = 0.51) and a higher number of head injuries involving loss of consciousness (Mdn[range]: IPV-related = 1[1-35] vs. non-IPV-related = 1[1-4], p < 0.001, r = 0.27), but lower rates of hospitalization (IPV-related = 56.1% vs. non-IPV-related = 73.7%, p = 0.001, odds ratio [OR] = 2.20 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.36, 3.55]) and formal rehabilitation (IPV-related = 3.2% vs. non-IPV-related = 9.4%, p = 0.011, OR = 3.18 [1.24, 8.13]) following head injury. Women with IPV-related head injuries had greater lifetime severity of physical IPV (p < 0.001, d = 0.64 [0.41, 0.86]) and sexual IPV (p < 0.001, d = 0.38 [0.16, 0.60]). Women with IPV-related head injuries endorsed all symptoms at greater rates than women with non-IPV-related head injuries (ps < 0.001), including physical (e.g., headaches: OR = 3.15 [1.81, 5.47]; dizziness: OR = 2.65 [1.68, 4.16]), cognitive (e.g., trouble problem solving: OR = 2.66 [1.53, 4.64]; inattention: OR = 2.39 [1.52, 3.78]), and emotional symptoms (e.g., depression: OR = 7.39 [4.48, 12.20]; anxiety: OR = 4.60 [2.82, 7.51]). The total count of symptoms endorsed was higher for women with IPV-related head injury than women with head injuries unrelated to IPV (p < 0.001, d = 0.71 [0.49, 0.94]). When controlling for lifetime physical and sexual IPV, IPV-related head injury was independently associated with symptom count (β = 0.261, p < 0.001) and accounted for additional variance in symptom count (ΔR2 = 0.06, p < 0.001). Among women survivors of IPV, those reporting IPV-related head injuries reported greater subacute symptoms, but a lower likelihood of being hospitalized or receiving rehabilitative care. Women with self-reported IPV-related head injuries represent an underserved population that is often unevaluated following injury and may have many unmet care needs. Future studies should examine persistent symptoms following IPV-related head injuries and interventions that would be most beneficial for this population.

Repetitive Head Injury and Cognitive, Physical, and Emotional Symptoms in Women Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence.

Many women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) experience repetitive head injuries in their lifetime, but limited research has examined the cumulative effects of multiple head injuries on post-concussion symptom severity in this population. This study examined how number of lifetime head injuries and episodes of loss of consciousness (LOC) due to head injuries were related to current cognitive, physical, and emotional symptoms among women survivors of IPV. Cisgender women from Kentucky were recruited following a protective order against an intimate partner, including 268 women with no reported lifetime head injuries and 250 women with one or more IPV-related head injuries (mean [M] = 17.2 head injuries, standard deviation [SD] = 50.5, median [Mdn] = 4, range = 1-515; M = 1.8 LOC episodes, SD = 4.3, Mdn = 1, range = 0-35, respectively). Participants underwent in-person interviews about lifetime physical and sexual IPV history, head injury history, and current cognitive, physical, and emotional symptoms. Sociodemographic characteristics, physical and sexual IPV severity, and current symptom severity were examined in relation to number of head injuries and LOC episodes. A higher number of head injuries was associated with greater age, White race, less than high school education, unemployment, and rural residence. No sociodemographic variables differed based on number of LOC episodes. Greater number of lifetime head injuries and LOC episodes correlated significantly with physical IPV severity (rho = 0.35, p < 0.001; rho = 0.33, p < 0.001, respectively) and sexual IPV severity (rho = 0.22, p < 0.001; rho = 0.19, p = 0.003). Greater number of head injuries and LOC episodes correlated significantly with greater cognitive (rho = 0.33, p < 0.001; rho = 0.23, p < 0.001, respectively), physical (rho = 0.36, p < 0.001; rho = 0.31, p < 0.001), emotional (rho = 0.36, p < 0.001; rho = 0.18, p = 0.004), and total symptom severity (rho = 0.39, p < 0.001; rho = 0.26, p < 0.001). In group comparisons, participant groups stratified by number of head injuries (i.e., 0, 1-3, 4+) differed in total symptom severity (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.15), with greater symptom burden associated with more head injuries. Participants with and without LOC differed in symptom severity: cognitive (p < 0.001, d = 0.45), physical (p < 0.001, d = 0.60), emotional (p = 0.004, d = 0.37), and total symptom severity (p < 0.001, d = 0.53). Group differences between participants with and without LOC remained significant after controlling for sociodemographic variables and IPV severity. There was no cumulative effect of LOC, in that participants with 1 LOC episode did not differ from participants with 2 + LOC episodes (p > 0.05). Based on hierarchical regression analyses, only physical symptoms were independently related to number of head injuries (p = 0.008, ΔR2 = 0.011) and number of LOC episodes (p = 0.014, ΔR2 = 0.021) after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and IPV severity. Among women survivors of IPV, cumulative head injuries appear related to greater symptom severity. Greater head injury history was independently related to worse physical symptoms (e.g., headaches, dizziness, sleep problems), whereas cognitive and emotional symptoms were, in part, attributable to cumulative physical and emotional trauma due to IPV. Women survivors of IPV with repetitive head injuries have unmet neurobehavioral health needs that may benefit from targeted interventions.

Intimate Partner Violence and Telemedicine Usage and Satisfaction Early in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

COVID-19 has transformed the landscape of telemedicine utilization, shifting from predominantly in-person services to increased virtual encounters. Although telemedicine offers increased accessibility for medical care, many advocates voice concern about utilization and satisfaction with these services among individuals who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) given the unique practical, mental, and physical health challenges many face. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate differences in telemedicine utilization and satisfaction, as well as global health and perceived loneliness, among data-driven patterns of IPV during the early phases of the pandemic. In this longitudinal survey study, participants first completed an online survey between May 2019 and February 2020 that assessed social, psychological, and physical functioning, as well as emotional and physical IPV. A follow-up survey sent in May 2020 assessed recent telemedicine use and satisfaction, as well as response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Latent class analysis favored 4 classes of IPV that differed based on severity and features of IPV experienced. Although all 4 classes reported high satisfaction with telemedicine, individuals reporting low IPV had the highest satisfaction with telemedicine and the lowest rates of telemedicine utilization. Individuals who experienced IPV, particularly multiple forms of emotional and physical IPV, reported high physical and social concerns and perceived stress. Clinicians using telemedicine should be aware of the multiple challenges faced by individuals experiencing IPV and take additional steps to ensure their needs are met in a safe way. These results have potentially important clinical and policy implications.

Nonintimate Polyvictimization and the Severity of Intimate Partner Violence Experienced by Men.

There is a dearth of research on the relation of men's cumulative experiences of nonintimate victimization (polyvictimization) to their victimization in intimate relationships. This study examines the association between nonintimate polyvictimization (including being abused as a child, cyberbullied, stalked, physically assaulted, and experiencing property crime) and the severity of intimate partner violence victimization in men. The sample of 8,784 men in current married/common-law relationships was drawn from a random sample of the 2014 Canadian General Social Survey. About 3% of the men (an estimate of about 265,000 men in Canada) experienced the most severe forms of partner abuse, including the combination of emotional abuse and controlling behaviors, physical violence, and the resulted injuries. Among these severely abused men, about one-third were polyvictims. As expected, a nonintimate polyvictimization predicted the increased severity of male partner abuse victimization, controlling for sociodemographic variables. These findings highlight the importance of preventing nonintimate polyvictimization of men that can help reduce their partner violence victimization.
