Image-based machine learning approach for structural damage detection through wavelet transforms

Structural integrity is essential for safety in infrastructure, as it can help prevent catastrophic failures and financial losses. The significance of vibration-based damage detection has grown substantially in fields such as civil and mechanical engineering. Concurrently, the advancements in computational capacities have facilitated the integration of machine learning into damage detection processes through post-processing algorithms. Nevertheless, these require extensive data from structure-affixed sensors, raising computational requirements. In an effort to address this challenge, we propose a novel approach utilizing a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) based on images to identify and assess structural damage. This method involves employing wavelet transform and scalograms to convert numerical acceleration data into image data, preserving spatial and temporal information more effectively compared to conventional Fourier transform frequency analysis. Six acceleration data channels are collected from carefully chosen nodes on a mini bridge model and a corresponding finite element bridge model, to train the CNN. The efficiency of training is further enhanced by applying transfer machine learning through two pre-trained CNNs, namely Alexnet and Resnet. We evaluate our method using different damage scenarios, and both Alexnet and Resnet show prediction accuracies over 90%.

Structural- and DTI- MRI enable automated prediction of IDH Mutation Status in CNS WHO Grade 2–4 glioma patients: a deep Radiomics Approach

BackgroundThe role of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation status for glioma stratification and prognosis is established. While structural magnetic resonance image (MRI) is a promising biomarker, it may not be sufficient for non-invasive characterisation of IDH mutation status. We investigated the diagnostic value of combined diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and structural MRI enhanced by a deep radiomics approach based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and support vector machine (SVM), to determine the IDH mutation status in Central Nervous System World Health Organization (CNS WHO) grade 2–4 gliomas.MethodsThis retrospective study analyzed the DTI-derived fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) images and structural images including fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), non-enhanced T1-, and T2-weighted images of 206 treatment-naïve gliomas, including 146 IDH mutant and 60 IDH-wildtype ones. The lesions were manually segmented by experienced neuroradiologists and the masks were applied to the FA and MD maps. Deep radiomics features were extracted from each subject by applying a pre-trained CNN and statistical description. An SVM classifier was applied to predict IDH status using imaging features in combination with demographic data.ResultsWe comparatively assessed the CNN-SVM classifier performance in predicting IDH mutation status using standalone and combined structural and DTI-based imaging features. Combined imaging features surpassed stand-alone modalities for the prediction of IDH mutation status [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.846; sensitivity = 0.925; and specificity = 0.567]. Importantly, optimal model performance was noted following the addition of demographic data (patients’ age) to structural and DTI imaging features [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.847; sensitivity = 0.911; and specificity = 0.617].ConclusionsImaging features derived from DTI-based FA and MD maps combined with structural MRI, have superior diagnostic value to that provided by standalone structural or DTI sequences. In combination with demographic information, this CNN-SVM model offers a further enhanced non-invasive prediction of IDH mutation status in gliomas.

Attention-enhanced conditional-diffusion-based data synthesis for data augmentation in machine fault diagnosis

Data scarcity and class imbalance are pervasive challenges in machine fault diagnosis, impeding the development and broad adaptation of accurate and reliable deep-learning-based fault detection systems. To address these issues, we propose a novel attention-enhanced conditioning-guided diffusion-based approach for synthesizing additional training data. By generating noisy motor-current signals and employing a diffusion process to reduce noise levels, we obtain synthetic data that closely resembles the statistical properties and patterns of real-world data. The quality of the synthesized samples is assessed using a four-layer, pre-trained convolutional neural network, achieving an impressive classification rate of 96.39%. This demonstrates the effectiveness of our attention-enhanced conditioned diffusion-based model in synthesizing critical features for fault detection, making it well-suited for the introduced fault detection task. To further investigate the quality of the synthesized data samples, we implement a specific training strategy that uses the generated samples as training data. The trained diffusion model generates samples per class, which are then used to train a simple four-layer convolutional neural network for fault classification. Remarkably, the model achieves an accuracy of 98.96% when evaluated with real inverter signals, indicating that the generated samples effectively capture the distribution of real data. For further evaluation, multiple scenarios are created confirming the value of the additionally synthesized samples for real-world bearing fault detection. Our approach presents a well-suited solution to the data scarcity and class imbalance problem in machine fault diagnosis. The proposed method enhances the accuracy and reliability of fault diagnosis systems, offering valuable insights for various real-world condition monitoring applications.

Classification of Melanoma Skin Cancer using Transfer Learning

Abstract: Melanoma, a fatal variety of skin cancer, is a significant public health issue on a global scale. For patients to have better results, melanoma must be detected accurately and early. In this study, transfer learning techniques are used in deep learning to provide a novel method of melanoma cancer detection. By using pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs), such as VGG, MobileNet, and EfficientNet, as feature extractors, the research takes advantage of the capability of transfer learning. These networks, which were first created for tasks involving generic image identification, are refined using a large dataset of dermoscopic images of skin lesions in order to adapt them to the particular needs of melanoma detection. Essential preprocessing techniques, including image resizing, image normalization, and lesion segmentation using the Otsu segmentation method, are used to improve the dataset's quality and consistency. Image normalization has been used to reduce the complexity and processing time of the image. Skin lesions have been segmented using Otsu segmentation. These procedures increase the robustness of the melanoma detection model and help to prepare the images for efficient training. The findings of this study highlight the possibility for an earlier and more precise diagnosis and provide encouraging insights into the viability of transfer learning as a formidable tool for melanoma detection. The overall objective of this work is to improve the diagnosis and patient care for melanoma cancer. This work contributes to ongoing efforts to provide practical and effective tools for dermatologists and healthcare professionals.

Learning-Based Approach for Automated Surface Inspection with Industrial Tomography Imaging

Abstract In recent years, advanced deep learning techniques have emerged as pivotal tools in enabling the development of robust vision-based solutions for steel surface inspection. This resulted in enhanced inspection accuracy, all while significantly reducing costs in the manufacturing industry. However, the lack of actual steel surface defects datasets currently places a certain constraint on further research into classifying those anomalies. As a consequence, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) technique, known for its prowess in image-related tasks, faces certain challenges especially in classifying less common defects. This work proposes a novel hybrid CNN model with an SVM classifier at the output layer for surface defects classification. The features extracted from the pre-trained ResNet152 and EfficientB0 CNN algorithms are concatenated and fed to the SVM layer for classification. Extensive experiments on a merged dataset consisting of the publicly available Northeastern University (NEU) dataset and Xsteel surface defect dataset (X-SDD) are carried out and the accuracy and F1 scores are calculated for performance evaluation. The merged dataset contains eleven typical defect types with a total of 2660 defect images. Then, the adopted algorithm is compared with ten fine-tuned deep learning models to evaluate the performance of transfer learning for steel defect detection and identification. The evaluation results show that the deep feature extraction and SVM classification produced better results than the transfer learning. Finally, the proposed classifier model is validated on a new collected dataset from a Computed Tomography scanner with an accuracy reaching over 96%.

Development of a facial recognition model using optimized convolution neural network with Tiny-ML and fingerprint authentication for safe lock entry

Safe boxes have been used for centuries to protect valuable items, and their design and construction have evolved over time to improve security. In this study, we carried out the design and implementation of a facial recognition technology using optimized convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with TinyML and fingerprint. The facial recognition system is designed using pre-trained CNN architectures then optimized with TinyML to make it fit into resource constrained edge device, the fingerprint recognition is designed using ridge matching biometric algorithm which fits in perfectly into the microcontroller-based system. The safe box was fabricated using sheet metal and insulated using heat resistive material (fiber glass), components like OV2640 camera module, ESP32-S3, R305 Fingerprint sensor, 4.3 inches touch screen TFT display and a charging module to manage and charge the systems battery were used. The system was implemented to be a level two security and two-way verification system using secured Wi-Fi to access the system before the facial and fingerprint recognition functionality is activated, the sequence of operation can either be facial recognition before fingerprint recognition or fingerprint recognition before facial recognition. Evaluating the system’s facial recognition performance with confusion matrix, of all the optimized CNN architectures like VGGNet, SENet, RestNet, MobileNet-V2, EfficientNet-B0, SENet Architecture performed best outputting an accuracy of 98%, precision of 92%, also SENet unoptimized model performed same, MobileNet-V2 performed optimally in the inference speed test with a speed of 15ms/images with the fingerprint also evaluated using confusion matrix and perform with 98% accuracy. It was noticed that the inference speed of the unoptimized model is faster than that of the TinyML optimized model which is justifiable based on the processing clock speed, memory usage, GPU and architecture of the microcontroller/microprocessor. From the result obtained TinyML proves to be suitable mean for edge AI (artificial intelligence) and is recommended for future research and development.

Validating predictions of burial mounds with field data: the promise and reality of machine learning

PurposeThis paper provides practical advice for archaeologists and heritage specialists wishing to use ML approaches to identify archaeological features in high-resolution satellite imagery (or other remotely sensed data sources). We seek to balance the disproportionately optimistic literature related to the application of ML to archaeological prospection through a discussion of limitations, challenges and other difficulties. We further seek to raise awareness among researchers of the time, effort, expertise and resources necessary to implement ML successfully, so that they can make an informed choice between ML and manual inspection approaches.Design/methodology/approachAutomated object detection has been the holy grail of archaeological remote sensing for the last two decades. Machine learning (ML) models have proven able to detect uniform features across a consistent background, but more variegated imagery remains a challenge. We set out to detect burial mounds in satellite imagery from a diverse landscape in Central Bulgaria using a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) plus additional but low-touch training to improve performance. Training was accomplished using MOUND/NOT MOUND cutouts, and the model assessed arbitrary tiles of the same size from the image. Results were assessed using field data.FindingsValidation of results against field data showed that self-reported success rates were misleadingly high, and that the model was misidentifying most features. Setting an identification threshold at 60% probability, and noting that we used an approach where the CNN assessed tiles of a fixed size, tile-based false negative rates were 95–96%, false positive rates were 87–95% of tagged tiles, while true positives were only 5–13%. Counterintuitively, the model provided with training data selected for highly visible mounds (rather than all mounds) performed worse. Development of the model, meanwhile, required approximately 135 person-hours of work.Research limitations/implicationsOur attempt to deploy a pre-trained CNN demonstrates the limitations of this approach when it is used to detect varied features of different sizes within a heterogeneous landscape that contains confounding natural and modern features, such as roads, forests and field boundaries. The model has detected incidental features rather than the mounds themselves, making external validation with field data an essential part of CNN workflows. Correcting the model would require refining the training data as well as adopting different approaches to model choice and execution, raising the computational requirements beyond the level of most cultural heritage practitioners.Practical implicationsImproving the pre-trained model’s performance would require considerable time and resources, on top of the time already invested. The degree of manual intervention required – particularly around the subsetting and annotation of training data – is so significant that it raises the question of whether it would be more efficient to identify all of the mounds manually, either through brute-force inspection by experts or by crowdsourcing the analysis to trained – or even untrained – volunteers. Researchers and heritage specialists seeking efficient methods for extracting features from remotely sensed data should weigh the costs and benefits of ML versus manual approaches carefully.Social implicationsOur literature review indicates that use of artificial intelligence (AI) and ML approaches to archaeological prospection have grown exponentially in the past decade, approaching adoption levels associated with “crossing the chasm” from innovators and early adopters to the majority of researchers. The literature itself, however, is overwhelmingly positive, reflecting some combination of publication bias and a rhetoric of unconditional success. This paper presents the failure of a good-faith attempt to utilise these approaches as a counterbalance and cautionary tale to potential adopters of the technology. Early-majority adopters may find ML difficult to implement effectively in real-life scenarios.Originality/valueUnlike many high-profile reports from well-funded projects, our paper represents a serious but modestly resourced attempt to apply an ML approach to archaeological remote sensing, using techniques like transfer learning that are promoted as solutions to time and cost problems associated with, e.g. annotating and manipulating training data. While the majority of articles uncritically promote ML, or only discuss how challenges were overcome, our paper investigates how – despite reasonable self-reported scores – the model failed to locate the target features when compared to field data. We also present time, expertise and resourcing requirements, a rarity in ML-for-archaeology publications.

Sign Language Recognition Using Convolutional Neural Network

This project introduces a real-time sign language detection system powered by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), designed to aid individuals with hearing impairments in communication. Leveraging OpenCV for video capture and hand detection, along with custom modules for hand tracking and image classification, the system seamlessly integrates deep learning methodologies. A pre-trained CNN model, trained on a comprehensive dataset of sign language gestures, forms the core of the system, ensuring accurate classification in real-time. By capturing video frames from a webcam, detecting hands, and processing them through the CNN model, the system provides immediate feedback by overlaying predicted gestures onto the video stream. Through its effective implementation, this project underscores the potential of CNNs in facilitating accessibility and inclusivity, while also paving the way for future enhancements and applications in assistive technology and human-computer interaction. COVID-19 Hierarchical Classification Using a Deep Learning Multi-Modal.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), originating in China, has rapidly spread worldwide. Physicians must examine infected patients and make timely decisions to isolate them. However, completing these processes is difficult due to limited time and availability of expert radiologists, as well as limitations of the reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. Deep learning, a sophisticated machine learning technique, leverages radiological imaging modalities for disease diagnosis and image classification tasks. Previous research on COVID-19 classification has encountered several limitations, including binary classification methods, single-feature modalities, small public datasets, and reliance on CT diagnostic processes. Additionally, studies have often utilized a flat structure, disregarding the hierarchical structure of pneumonia classification. This study aims to overcome these limitations by identifying pneumonia caused by COVID-19, distinguishing it from other types of pneumonia and healthy lungs using chest X-ray (CXR) images and related tabular medical data, and demonstrate the value of incorporating tabular medical data in achieving more accurate diagnoses. Resnet-based and VGG-based pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models were employed to extract features, which were then combined using early fusion for the classification of eight distinct classes. We leveraged the hierarchal structure of pneumonia classification within our approach to achieve improved classification outcomes. Since an imbalanced dataset is common in this field, a variety of versions of generative adversarial networks (GANs) were used to generate synthetic data. The proposed approach tested in our private datasets of 4523 patients achieved a macro-avg F1-score of 95.9% and an F1-score of 87.5% for COVID-19 identification using a Resnet-based structure. In conclusion, in this study, we were able to create an accurate deep learning multi-modal to diagnose COVID-19 and differentiate it from other kinds of pneumonia and normal lungs, which will enhance the radiological diagnostic process.

Ultrasound-based deep learning radiomics model for differentiating benign, borderline, and malignant ovarian tumours: a multi-class classification exploratory study.

Accurate preoperative identification of ovarian tumour subtypes is imperative for patients as it enables physicians to custom-tailor precise and individualized management strategies. So, we have developed an ultrasound (US)-based multiclass prediction algorithm for differentiating between benign, borderline, and malignant ovarian tumours. We randomised data from 849 patients with ovarian tumours into training and testing sets in a ratio of 8:2. The regions of interest on the US images were segmented and handcrafted radiomics features were extracted and screened. We applied the one-versus-rest method in multiclass classification. We inputted the best features into machine learning (ML) models and constructed a radiomic signature (Rad_Sig). US images of the maximum trimmed ovarian tumour sections were inputted into a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) model. After internal enhancement and complex algorithms, each sample's predicted probability, known as the deep transfer learning signature (DTL_Sig), was generated. Clinical baseline data were analysed. Statistically significant clinical parameters and US semantic features in the training set were used to construct clinical signatures (Clinic_Sig). The prediction results of Rad_Sig, DTL_Sig, and Clinic_Sig for each sample were fused as new feature sets, to build the combined model, namely, the deep learning radiomic signature (DLR_Sig). We used the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) to estimate the performance of the multiclass classification model. The training set included 440 benign, 44 borderline, and 196 malignant ovarian tumours. The testing set included 109 benign, 11 borderline, and 49 malignant ovarian tumours. DLR_Sig three-class prediction model had the best overall and class-specific classification performance, with micro- and macro-average AUC of 0.90 and 0.84, respectively, on the testing set. Categories of identification AUC were 0.84, 0.85, and 0.83 for benign, borderline, and malignant ovarian tumours, respectively. In the confusion matrix, the classifier models of Clinic_Sig and Rad_Sig could not recognise borderline ovarian tumours. However, the proportions of borderline and malignant ovarian tumours identified by DLR_Sig were the highest at 54.55% and 63.27%, respectively. The three-class prediction model of US-based DLR_Sig can discriminate between benign, borderline, and malignant ovarian tumours. Therefore, it may guide clinicians in determining the differential management of patients with ovarian tumours.

Enhancing Fish Auction with Deep Learning and Computer Vision: Automated Caliber and Species Classification

The accurate labeling of species and size of specimens plays a pivotal role in fish auctions conducted at fishing ports. These labels, among other relevant information, serve as determinants of the objectivity of the auction preparation process, underscoring the indispensable nature of a reliable labeling system. Historically, this task has relied on manual processes, rendering it vulnerable to subjective interpretations by the involved personnel, therefore compromising the value of the merchandise. Consequently, the digitization and implementation of an automated labeling system are proposed as a viable solution to this ongoing challenge. This study presents an automatic system for labeling species and size, leveraging pre-trained convolutional neural networks. Specifically, the performance of VGG16, EfficientNetV2L, Xception, and ResNet152V2 networks is thoroughly examined, incorporating data augmentation techniques and fine-tuning strategies. The experimental findings demonstrate that for species classification, the EfficientNetV2L network excels as the most proficient model, achieving an average F-Score of 0.932 in its automatic mode and an average F-Score of 0.976 in its semi-automatic mode. Concerning size classification, a semi-automatic model is introduced, where the Xception network emerges as the superior model, achieving an average F-Score of 0.949.

LighterFace Model for Community Face Detection and Recognition

This research proposes a face detection algorithm named LighterFace, which is aimed at enhancing detection speed to meet the demands of real-time community applications. Two pre-trained convolutional neural networks are combined, namely Cross Stage Partial Network (CSPNet), and ShuffleNetv2. Connecting the optimized network with Global Attention Mechanism (GAMAttention) extends the model to compensate for the accuracy loss caused by optimizing the network structure. Additionally, the learning rate of the detection model is dynamically updated using the cosine annealing method, which enhances the convergence speed of the model during training. This paper analyzes the training of the LighterFace model on the WiderFace dataset and a custom community dataset, aiming to classify faces in real-life community settings. Compared to the mainstream YOLOv5 model, LighterFace demonstrates a significant reduction in computational demands by 85.4% while achieving a 66.3% increase in detection speed and attaining a 90.6% accuracy in face detection. It is worth noting that LighterFace generates high-quality cropped face images, providing valuable inputs for subsequent face recognition models such as DeepID. Additionally, the LighterFace model is specifically designed to run on edge devices with lower computational capabilities. Its real-time performance on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ validates the results.

A Bidirectional Arabic Sign Language Framework Using Deep Learning and Fuzzy Matching Score

Sign language is widely used to facilitate the communication process between deaf people and their surrounding environment. Sign language, like most other languages, is considered a complex language which cannot be mastered easily. Thus, technology can be used as an assistive tool to solve the difficulties and challenges that deaf people face during interactions with society. In this study, an automatic bidirectional translation framework for Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) is designed to assist both deaf and ordinary people to communicate and express themselves easily. Two main modules were intended to translate Arabic sign images into text by utilizing different transfer learning models and to translate the input text into Arabic sign images. A prototype was implemented based on the proposed framework by using several pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning models, including the DenseNet121, ResNet152, MobileNetV2, Xception, InceptionV3, NASNetLarge, VGG19, and VGG16 models. A fuzzy string matching score method, as a novel concept, was employed to translate the input text from ordinary people into appropriate sign language images. The dataset was constructed with specific criteria to obtain 7030 images for 14 classes captured from both deaf and ordinary people locally. The prototype was developed to conduct the experiments on the collected ArSL dataset using the utilized CNN deep learning models. The experimental results were evaluated using standard measurement metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The performance and efficiency of the ArSL prototype were assessed using a test set of an 80:20 splitting procedure, obtaining accuracy results from the highest to the lowest rates with average classification time in seconds for each utilized model, including (VGG16, 98.65%, 72.5), (MobileNetV2, 98.51%, 100.19), (VGG19, 98.22%, 77.16), (DenseNet121, 98.15%, 80.44), (Xception, 96.44%, 72.54), (NASNetLarge, 96.23%, 84.96), (InceptionV3, 94.31%, 76.98), and (ResNet152, 47.23%, 98.51). The fuzzy matching score is mathematically validated by computing the distance between the input and associative dictionary words. The study results showed the prototype’s ability to successfully translate Arabic sign images into Arabic text and vice versa, with the highest accuracy. This study proves the ability to develop a robust and efficient real-time bidirectional ArSL translation system using deep learning models and the fuzzy string matching score method.

Exploring the Potential of Pretrained CNNs and Time-Frequency Methods for Accurate Epileptic EEG Classification: A Comparative Study.

Prompt diagnosis of epilepsy relies on accurate classification of automated electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Several approaches have been developed to characterize epileptic EEG data; however, none of them have exploited time-frequency data to evaluate the effect of tweaking parameters in pretrained frameworks for EEG data classification. This study compares the performance of several pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) namely, AlexNet, GoogLeNet, MobileNetV2, ResNet-18 and SqueezeNet for the localization of epilepsy EEG data using various time-frequency data representation algorithms. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT), empirical Fourier decomposition (EFD), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), empirical wavelet transform (EWT), and variational mode decomposition (VMD) were exploited for the acquisition of 2D scalograms from 1D data. The research evaluates the effect of multiple factors, including noisy versus denoised scalograms, different optimizers, learning rates, single versus dual channels, model size, and computational time consumption. The benchmark Bern Barcelona EEG dataset is used for testing purpose. Results obtained show that the combination of MobileNetV2, Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Adam optimizer at a learning rate of 10^-4, coupled with dual-data channels, provides the best performance metrics. Specifically, these parameters result in optimal sensitivity, specificity, f1-score, and classification accuracy, with respective values of 96.06%, 96.15%, 96.08%, and 96.10%. To further corroborate the efficacy of opted pretrained models on exploited Signal Decomposition (SD) algorithms, the classifiers are also being simulated on Temple University database at pinnacle modeling composition. A similar pattern in the outcome readily validate the findings of our study and robustness of deep learning models on epilepsy EEG scalograms.The conclusions drawn emphasize the potential of pretrained CNN-based models to create a robust, automated system for diagnosing epileptiform. Furthermore, the study offers insights into the effectiveness of varying time-frequency techniques and classifier parameters for classifying epileptic EEG data.

AROA based Pre-trained Model of Convolutional Neural Network for Voice Pathology Detection and Classification

With the demand for better, more user-friendly HMIs, voice recognition systems have risen in prominence in recent years. The use of computer-assisted vocal pathology categorization tools allows for the accurate detection of voice pathology diseases. By using these methods, vocal disorders may be diagnosed early on and treated accordingly. An effective Deep Learning-based tool for feature extraction-based vocal pathology identification is the goal of this project. This research presents the results of using EfficientNet, a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), on a speech pathology dataset in order to achieve the highest possible classification accuracy. An Artificial Rabbit Optimization Algorithm (AROA)-tuned set of parameters complements the model's mobNet building elements, which include a linear stack of divisible convolution and max-pooling layers activated by Swish. In order to make the suggested approach applicable to a broad variety of voice disorder problems, this study also suggests a unique training method along with several training methodologies. One speech database, the Saarbrücken voice database (SVD), has been used to test the proposed technology. Using up to 96% accuracy, the experimental findings demonstrate that the suggested CNN approach is capable of detecting speech pathologies. The suggested method demonstrates great potential for use in real-world clinical settings, where it may provide accurate classifications in as little as three seconds and expedite automated diagnosis and treatment.

Refined Detection and Classification of Knee Ligament Injury Based on ResNet Convolutional Neural Networks.

Currently, medical imaging has largely supplanted traditional methods in the realm of diagnosis and treatment planning. This shift is primarily attributable to the non-invasive nature, rapidity, and user-friendliness of medical-imaging techniques. The widespread adoption of medical imaging, however, has shifted the bottleneck to healthcare professionals who must analyze each case post-image acquisition. This process is characterized by its sluggishness and subjectivity, making it susceptible to errors. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a frequently injured knee ligament, predominantly affects a youthful and sports-active demographic. ACL injuries often leave patients with substantial disabilities and alter knee mechanics. Since some of these cases necessitate surgery, it is crucial to accurately classify and detect ACL injury. This paper investigates the utilization of pre-trained convolutional neural networks featuring residual connections (ResNet) along with image-processing methods to identify ACL injury and differentiate between various tear levels. The ResNet employed in this study is not the standard ResNet but rather an adapted version capable of processing 3D volumes constructed from 2D image slices. Achieving a peak accuracy of 97.15% with a custom split, 96.32% through Monte-Carlo cross-validation, and 93.22% via five-fold cross-validation, our approach enhances the performance of three-class classifiers by over 7% in terms of raw accuracy. Moreover, we achieved an improvement of more than 1% across all types of evaluation. It is quite clear that the model's output can effectively serve as an initial diagnostic baseline for radiologists with minimal effort and nearly instantaneous results. This advancement underscores the paper's focus on harnessing deep learning for the nuanced detection and classification of ACL tears, demonstrating a significant leap toward automating and refining diagnostic accuracy in sports medicine and orthopedics.

Deep learning-based CNN for multiclassification of ocular diseases using transfer learning

ABSTRACT Effective and timely diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases is essential for swift recovery of the patients. Among ocular diseases, cataract and glaucoma are the most prevalent globally and need adequate attention. The present paper aims to develop an optimised deep learning based convolutional neural network (CNN) for the multi-classification of ocular diseases (normal, glaucoma and cataract). Three pre-trained CNNs (SqueezeNet, Darknet-53, EfficientNet-b0) were optimised concerning batch size (6/8/10) & optimiser type (SGDM, RMSProp, Adam) for obtaining maximum possible accuracy in the detection of multiple ocular diseases (cataract & glaucoma). Darknet-53 (batch size-6, optimiser type-Adam) gave the highest accuracy of 99.4% for a test sample of 1000 images. The performance metrics of Darknet-53 have been computed using a confusion matrix. Confusion matrix is also applied to calculate accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, f1 score and receiver operating curve (ROC). Through comparative performance analysis of the three CNNs, SqueezeNet, Darknet-53 and EfficientNet-b0 achieved the highest accuracy of 95%, 99.4% and 90%, respectively. The results indicate the importance of batch size and optimiser type on the performance of CNN models.

A Fuzzy Minkowski Distance-based fusion of convolutional neural networks for gastrointestinal disease detection

Accurate classification of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions from medical images is a critical task for facilitating timely diagnosis and effective treatment. However, the reliance on manual diagnosis introduces the possibility of human errors. In response, researchers have been tirelessly working to develop robust computerized methods that can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy. In this study, we present a novel approach designed to elevate the precision of classification tasks through the utilization of a Fuzzy Minkowski Distance-based Ensemble Model. Our ensemble model is accurately constructed by integrating three well-established pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models: MobileNet, ResNet101V2, and Xception. To enhance the robustness of these base models, we incorporate ResNeXt block, effectively amplifying their ability in feature extraction and representation. Furthermore, we extract probabilities from these models and aggregate them using a fuzzy Minkowski Distance approach. This technique serves to minimize error values between observed and ground-truth data, leading to a further enhancement in detection accuracy. For our experiments, we utilize a publicly available dataset containing 6000 endoscopy images. These images are not only enhanced through the application of image contrast enhancement techniques but are also subjected to augmentation processes, effectively enhancing the dataset's diversity and contributing to improved performance in the classification task. After conducting comprehensive assessments, we highlight the strength of our ensemble model compared to single base models and existing methods. The ensemble consistently achieves an impressive accuracy of 99.62%, showcasing its potential as a powerful tool for accurate diagnosis in the field of gastroenterology.
