The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). XXVII. The Size and Structure of Globular Cluster Systems and Their Connection to Dark Matter Halos

We study the size and structure of globular cluster (GC) systems of 118 early-type galaxies from the NGVS, MATLAS, and ACSVCS surveys. Fitting Sérsic profiles, we investigate the relationship between effective radii of GC systems (R e,gc) and galaxy properties. GC systems are 2–4 times more extended than host galaxies across the entire stellar mass range of our sample (108.3 M ⊙ < M * < 1011.6 M ⊙). The relationship between R e,gc and galaxy stellar mass exhibits a characteristic “knee” at a stellar mass of M p ≃ 1010.8, similar to the galaxy R e –stellar mass relationship. We present a new characterization of the traditional blue and red GC color subpopulations, describing them with respect to host galaxy (g′−i′) color (Δgi): GCs with similar colors to their hosts have a “red” Δgi, and those significantly bluer GCs have a “blue” Δgi. The GC populations with red Δgi, even in dwarf galaxies, are twice as extended as the stars, suggesting that formation or survival mechanisms favor the outer regions. We find a tight correlation between R e,gc and the total number of GCs, with intrinsic scatter ≲0.1 dex spanning two and three orders of magnitude in size and number, respectively. This holds for both red and blue subpopulations, albeit with different slopes. Assuming that N GC,Total correlates with M 200, we find that the red GC systems have effective radii of roughly 1%–5% R 200, while the blue GC systems in massive galaxies can have sizes as large as ∼10% R 200. Environmental dependence on R e,gc is also found, with lower-density environments exhibiting more extended GC systems at fixed mass.

Shapes of dark matter haloes with discrete globular cluster dynamics: The example of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A)

Within the Lambda cold dark matter (Lambda CDM) cosmology, dark matter haloes are expected to deviate from spherical symmetry. The particular shape of a galactic halo reflects the environment and mass assembly history of its host, as well as the nature of dark matter. Constraining halo shapes at large galactocentric distances is challenging because of the low density of luminous tracers. The well-studied massive early-type galaxy NGC 5128, also known as Centaurus A (CenA), has a large number of radial velocity measurements for globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe) extending over a vast area of its extended low-surface-brightness stellar halo. In this work, we aim to determine the deviation from spherical symmetry of the dark matter halo of CenA at 5 using its GCs as kinematic tracers of the gravitational potential. We investigated the largest photometric catalogue of GC candidates in order to accurately characterise the spatial distribution of the relaxed population of GCs. To investigate the presence of non-relaxed structures in the kinematic catalogue of GCs, we used the relaxed point-symmetric velocity field as determined by the host's PNe population. We used anisotropic Jeans modelling under axisymmetric assumptions together with the Gaussian likelihood and GCs as discrete tracers. The gravitational potential is generated by flattened stellar and dark matter distributions. We leveraged the different orbital properties of the blue and red GCs ---such as rotation and velocity anisotropy--- to model both populations separately. By minimising $ we iteratively find the best-fit parameters. We find that the discrete kinematics of the GCs are consistent with being drawn from an underlying relaxed velocity field determined from PNe. The best-fit parameters of the gravitational potential recovered from the blue and red GCs separately agree well and we use them to compute the final results: $M_ $, and the flattening $q_ DM $. Both GC populations show mild rotation, with red having a slightly stronger rotational signature and radially biased orbits, and blue GCs preferring negative velocity anisotropy. An oblate or a spherical dark matter halo of NGC 5128 is strongly disfavoured by our modelling.

Extending the chemical reach of the H3 survey: detailed abundances of the dwarf-galaxy stellar stream Wukong/LMS-1

ABSTRACT We present the first detailed chemical-abundance analysis of stars from the dwarf-galaxy stellar stream Wukong/LMS-1 covering a wide metallicity range ($-3.5 \lt \rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -1.3$). We find abundance patterns that are effectively indistinguishable from the bulk of Indus and Jhelum, a pair of smaller stellar streams proposed to be dynamically associated with Wukong/LMS-1. We confirmed a carbon-enhanced metal-poor star ($\rm [C/Fe] \gt +0.7$ and $\rm [Fe/H] \sim -2.9$) in Wukong/LMS-1 with strong enhancements in Sr, Y, and Zr, which is peculiar given its solar-level [Ba/Fe]. Wukong/LMS-1 stars have high abundances of α elements up to $\rm [Fe/H] \gtrsim -2$, which is expected for relatively massive dwarfs. Towards the high-metallicity end, Wukong/LMS-1 becomes α-poor, revealing that it probably experienced fairly standard chemical evolution. We identified a pair of N- and Na-rich stars in Wukong/LMS-1, reminiscent of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. This indicates that this dwarf galaxy contained at least one globular cluster that was completely disrupted in addition to two intact ones previously known to be associated with Wukong/LMS-1, which is possibly connected to similar evidence found in Indus. From these ≥3 globular clusters, we estimate the total mass of Wukong/LMS-1 to be ${\approx }10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$, representing ∼1 per cent of the present-day Milky Way. Finally, the [Eu/Mg] ratio in Wukong/LMS-1 continuously increases with metallicity, making this the first example of a dwarf galaxy where the production of r-process elements is clearly dominated by delayed sources, presumably neutron-star mergers.

A search for intermediate-mass black holes in compact stellar systems through optical emissions from tidal disruption events

Abstract Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH) are expected to exist in globular clusters (GCs) and compact stellar systems (CSS) in general, but none have been conclusively detected. Tidal disruption events (TDEs), where a star is tidally disrupted by the gravitational field of a black hole, have been observed to occur around the supermassive black holes (SMBH) found at the centres of galaxies, and should also arise around IMBHs, especially in the dense stellar cores of CSS’s. However, to date none have been observed in such environments. Using data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) we search for TDEs associated with CSS, but none are found. This non-detection allows us to set an upper limit on the TDE rate in CSS of nTDE, Total⪅10−7 CSS−1 yr−1 which is two dex. below the observed TDE rate involving SMBH interacting with 1 M⊙ main sequence stars in the nuclei of massive galaxies. We also consider ultra compact dwarfs (UCDs) formed through a tidal stripping process in the surveyed volume. On the assumption these CSS contain SMBH and TDE rates are comparable to current observed optical rates in galactic nuclei (≈3.2 × 10−5 gal−1 yr−1), we determine an upper limit for the number of UCDs formed through a tidal stripping process in the surveyed volume to be NGC, Strip &amp;lt; 1.4 × 104, which we estimate represents $&amp;lt; 6~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the population of GCs &amp;gt;106M⊙.

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations have been demonstrated to be efficient in detecting multiple stellar populations in globular clusters (GCs) in the low-mass regime of M dwarfs. We present an overview, and first results, of different projects that can be explored by using the JWST observations gathered under program GO2560 for 47 Tucanae, the first program entirely devoted to the investigation of multiple populations in very-low-mass stars, which includes spectroscopic data for the faintest GC stars for which spectra are available. Our color–magnitude diagram (CMD) shows some substructures for ultracool stars, including gaps and breaks in slope. In particular, we observe both a gap and a minimum in the F322W2 luminosity function less than 1 mag apart, and discuss which it could be associated with the H-burning limit. We detect stars fainter than this minimum, very likely brown dwarfs. We corroborate the ubiquity of the multiple populations across different masses, from ∼0.1 M ⊙ up to red giants (∼0.8 M ⊙). The oxygen range inferred for the M dwarfs, both from the CMD and from the spectra of two M dwarfs associated with different populations, is similar to that observed for giants. We have not detected any difference between the fractions of stars in distinct populations across stellar masses ≳ 0.1 M ⊙. This work demonstrates the JWST's capability in uncovering multiple populations within M dwarfs and illustrates the possibility to analyze very-low-mass stars in GCs approaching the H-burning limit and the brown-dwarf sequence.

JWST NIRCam Photometry: A Study of Globular Clusters Surrounding Bright Elliptical Galaxy VV 191a at z = 0.0513

James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam images have revealed 154 reliable globular cluster (GC) candidates around the z = 0.0513 elliptical galaxy VV 191a after subtracting 34 likely interlopers from background galaxies inside our search area. NIRCam broadband observations are made at 0.9–4.5 μm using the F090W, F150W, F356W, and F444W filters. Using point-spread-function-matched photometry, the data are analyzed to present color–magnitude diagrams and color distributions that suggest a relatively uniform population of GCs, except for small fractions of reddest (5%–8%) and bluest (2%–4%) outliers. GC models in the F090W versus (F090W–F150W) diagram fit the NIRCam data well and show that the majority of GCs detected have a mass of ∼106.5 M ⊙, with metallicities [Fe/H] spanning the typical range expected for GCs (−2.5 ≲ [Fe/H]≲ 0.5). However, the models predict ∼0.3–0.4 mag bluer (F356W–F444W) colors than the NIRCam data for a reasonable range of GC ages, metallicities, and reddening. Although our data do not quite reach the luminosity function turnover, the measured luminosity function is consistent with previous measurements, suggesting an estimated peak at m AB ∼ −9.4 ± 0.2 mag in the F090W filter.

Reevaluating the Origin of Detectable Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters: Testing the Importance of Dynamics

Based on the current detectable cataclysmic variable (CV) population in Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we show that there is not a clear relation between the number of sources per unit of mass and the stellar encounter rate, the cluster mass, or the cluster central density. If any, only in the case of core-collapsed GCs could there be an anticorrelation with the stellar encounter rate. Our findings contrast with previous studies where clear positive correlations were identified. Our results suggest that correlations between faint X-ray sources, from which often conclusions for the CV population are drawn, and the GC parameters considered here, are likely influenced by other type of X-ray sources, including other types of compact binaries, which have X-ray luminosities similar to CVs. The findings presented here also suggest that the role of primordial systems is more important than previously believed and that dynamical formation has less influence in the current detectable CV population. The long-standing paradigm that GCs are efficient factories of CVs formed via dynamical interactions does not seem to be supported by current observations.

Galaxy assembly revealed by globular clusters

Many observable properties of globular clusters (GCs) provide valuable insights for unveiling the hierarchical assembly of their host galaxy. For the Milky Way (MW) in particular, GCs from different accreted satellite galaxies show distinct chemical, spatial, kinematic, and age distributions. Here we examine such clustering features for model GC populations in simulated galaxies, which are carefully selected to match various observational constraints of the MW assembly. We evaluate several widely used clustering, dimensionality reduction, and supervised classification methods on these model GCs, using 10 properties that are observable in the MW. We can categorize in-situ and ex-situ formed GCs with about 90% accuracy, based solely on their clustering features in these 10 variables. The methods are also effective in distinguishing the last major merger in MW analogs with similar accuracy. Although challenging, we still find it possible to identify one, and only one, additional smaller satellite. We develop a new technique to classify the progenitors of MW GCs by combining several methods and weighting them by the validated accuracy. According to this technique, about 60% of GCs belong to the in-situ group, 20% are associated with the Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus event, and 10% are associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. The remaining 10% of GCs cannot be reliably associated with any single accretion event.

Discovery of Globular Cluster Candidates in the Dwarf Irregular Galaxy IC 2574 Using HST/ACS Imaging

ABSTRACT We report the discovery of 23 globular cluster (GC) candidates around the relatively isolated dwarf galaxy IC 2574 within the Messier 81 (M81) group, at a distance of 3.86 Mpc. We use observations from the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to analyse the imaging in the F814W and F555W broad-band filters. Our GC candidates have luminosities ranging from −5.9 ≥ MV ≥ −10.4 and half-light radii of 1.4 ≤ rh ≤ 11.5 pc. We find the total number of GCs (NGC) = 27 ± 5 after applying completeness corrections, which implies a specific frequency of SN = 4.0 ± 0.8, consistent with expectations based on its luminosity. The GC system appears to have a bimodal colour distribution, with 30 percent of the GC candidates having redder colours. We also find five objects with extremely blue colours that could be young star clusters linked to an intense star formation episode that occurred in IC 2574 ∼1 Gyr ago. We make an independent measurement of the halo mass of IC 2574 from its kinematic data, which is rare for low mass galaxies, and find log M200 = 10.93 ± 0.08. We place the galaxy on the well-known GC system mass–halo mass relation and find that it agrees well with the observed near-linear relation. IC 2574 has a rich GC population for a dwarf galaxy, which includes an unusually bright ω Cen-like GC, making it an exciting nearby laboratory for probing the peculiar efficiency of forming massive GCs in dwarf galaxies.

Constrain the Dark-matter Distribution of Ultra-diffuse Galaxies with Globular-cluster Mass Segregation: A Case Study with NGC5846-UDG1

The properties of globular clusters (GCs) contain valuable information of their host galaxies and dark-matter halos. In the remarkable example of ultra-diffuse galaxy, NGC5846-UDG1, the GC population exhibits strong radial mass segregation, indicative of dynamical-friction-driven orbital decay, which opens the possibility of using imaging data alone to constrain the dark-matter content of the galaxy. To explore this possibility, we develop a semianalytical model of GC evolution, which starts from the initial mass, structural, and spatial distributions of the GC progenitors, and follows the effects of dynamical friction, tidal evolution, and two-body relaxation. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo, we forward-model the GCs in a UDG1-like potential to match the observed GC statistics, and to constrain the profile of the host halo and the origin of the GCs. We find that, with the assumptions of zero mass segregation when the star clusters were born, UDG1 is relatively dark-matter-poor compared to what is expected from stellar-to-halo–mass relations, and its halo concentration is lower than the cosmological average, irrespective of having a cuspy or a cored profile. Its GC population has an initial spatial distribution more extended than the smooth stellar distribution. We discuss the results in the context of scaling laws of galaxy–halo connections, and warn against naively using the GC-abundance–halo–mass relation to infer the halo mass of ultra-diffuse galaxies. Our model is generally applicable to GC-rich dwarf galaxies, and is publicly available.

Searching for Intermediate-mass Black Holes in Globular Clusters through Tidal Disruption Events

Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) may be the link between stellar mass holes and the supermassive variety in the nuclei of galaxies, and globular clusters (GCs) may be one of the most promising environments for their formation. Here, we carry out a pilot study of the observability of tidal disruption events (TDEs) from 103 M ⊙ < M • < 105 M ⊙ IMBHs embedded in stellar cusps at the center of GCs. We model the long super-Eddington accretion phase and ensuing optical flare, and derive the disruption rate of main-sequence stars as a function of black hole mass and GC properties with the help of a 1D Fokker–Planck approach. The photospheric emission of the adiabatically expanding outflow dominates the observable radiation and peaks in the near-ultraviolet/optical bands, outshining the brightness of the (old) stellar population of GCs in Virgo for a period of months to years. A search for TDE events in a sample of nearly 4000 GCs observed at multiple epochs by the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey yields null results. Given our model predictions, this sample is too small to set stringent constraints on the present-day occupation fraction of GCs hosting IMBHs. Naturally, better simulations of the properties of the cluster central stellar distribution, TDE light curves, and rates, together with larger surveys of GCs are all needed to gain deeper insights into the presence of IMBHs in GCs.

The treasure behind the haystack: MUSE analysis of five recently discovered globular clusters

Context. After the second data release of Gaia, the number of new globular cluster candidates has increased significantly. However, most of them need to be properly characterised, both spectroscopically and photometrically, by means of radial velocities, metallicities, and deeper photometric observations. Aims. Our goal is to provide an independent confirmation of the cluster nature of Gran 4, a recently discovered globular cluster, with follow-up spectroscopic observations. The derived radial velocity for individual stars, coupled with proper motions, allows us to isolate cluster members from field stars, while the analysis of their spectra allows us to derive metallicities. By including in the analysis the recently confirmed clusters Gran 1, 2, 3, and 5, we aim to completely characterise recently discovered globular clusters. Methods. Using Gaia DR3 and VVV catalogue data and MUSE at VLT observations, we selected cluster members based on their proper motions, radial velocities and their position in colour-magnitude diagrams. Furthermore, full spectral synthesis was performed on the cluster members, extracting surface parameters and metallicity from MUSE spectra. Finally, a completeness estimation was performed on the total globular cluster population of the Milky Way. Results. We confirm the nature of Gran 4, a newly discovered globular cluster behind the Galactic bulge, with a mean radial velocity of RV = −265.28 ± 3.92 km s−1 and a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]= − 1.72 ± 0.32 dex. Additionally, independent measurements of the metallicities were derived for Gran 1, 2, 3, and 5. We also revise the observational lower mass limit for a globular cluster to survive in the bulge and disc environment. We estimate that ∼12 − 26 globular clusters have still to be discovered on the other side of the Galaxy (i.e., behind the bulge, bar and disk), up to 20 kpc.

Ages, metallicity, and α-enhancement of the globular cluster populations in NGC 3311

Aims. We aim to investigate the stellar population properties, ages, and metal content of the globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 3311, the central galaxy of the Hydra I cluster, to better constrain its evolution history. Methods. We used integral-field spectroscopic data from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) to identify 680 sources in the central region of NGC 3311 and extract their 1D spectra. An analysis of these sources in terms of morphologies, radial velocities, and emission lines allowed us to narrow down our selection to 49 bona fide GC candidates. We split these candidates into two groups depending on their projected distance to the galaxy center (R), namely inner (R ≤ 20″) and outer (R &gt; 20″) GCs. We stacked the extracted 1D spectra of the inner and outer GC populations to increase the signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of the resulting spectra and hence allow full-spectrum fitting. In addition, we also created a stacked spectrum of all GCs in NGC 3311 and one of the two most central GC candidates. Using the code pPXF, we performed a stellar population analysis on the four stacked 1D spectra, obtaining mass-weighted integrated ages, metallicities, and [α/Fe] abundances. Results. All GCs are old, with ages ≥13.5 Gyr, and they have super-solar metallicities. Looking at the color distribution, we find that the inner ones tend to be redder and more metal-rich than the outer ones. This is consistent with the two-phase formation scenario. Looking at the full-spectral fitting results, at face value the outer GCs have a larger [α/Fe] ratio, which is in line with what is found for the stars that dominate the surface brightness profile at the same radii. However, the values for outer and inner GCs are consistent within the uncertainties. Interestingly, the stacked spectrum of the two most central GCs appears to have the highest metallicity and [α/Fe], although with larger uncertainties. They might be associated with the core progenitor of NGC 3311. Conclusions. The careful analysis of the MUSE-extracted 1D spectra for compact sources in the center of NGC 3311 and its halo indicate that a significant fraction (28%) do display emission lines. Once they are removed, the selected bona fide GC candidates are old (≥13.5 Gyr) and have super-solar metallicities (slightly larger in the center) and [α/Fe] (slightly larger for the outer GCs). Stellar population analyses of the extracted spectra do not support the presence of an intermediate (a few Gigayears) GC population in the central 40 arcsec (10 kpc) radius of NGC 3311.

The structural properties of multiple populations in globular clusters: The instructive case of NGC 3201

All multiple population (MP) formation models in globular clusters (GCs) predict that second population (SP) stars form more centrally concentrated than the first population (FP). As dynamical evolution proceeds, spatial differences are progressively erased and only dynamically young clusters are expected to retain a partial memory of the initial structural differences. In recent years, this picture has been supported by observations of the MP radial distributions of both Galactic and extragalactic GCs. However, more recent observations have suggested that in some systems, FPs might actually form more centrally segregated, with NGC 3201 being one significant example of such a possibility. Here, we present a detailed morphological and kinematic characterization of the MPs in NGC 3201, based on a combination of photometric and astrometric data. We show that the distribution of the SP is clearly bimodal. Specifically, the SP is significantly more centrally concentrated than the FP within $ cluster’s half-mass radius. Beyond this point, the SP fraction increases again, likely due to asymmetries in the spatial distributions of the two populations. The central concentration of the SP observed in the central regions implies that it formed more centrally concentrated than the FP, even more so than what is observed in the present-day. This interpretation is supported by the key information provided by the MP kinematic properties. Indeed, we find that the FP is isotropic across all the sampled cluster extension, while the velocity distribution of the SP becomes radially anisotropic in the cluster’s outer regions, as expected for the dynamical evolution of SP stars formed more centrally concentrated than the FP. The combination of spatial and kinematic observations provide key insights into the dynamical properties of this cluster and lend further support to scenarios in which the SP forms more centrally concentrated than the FP.

Horizontal branch structure, age, and chemical composition for very metal-poor extragalactic globular clusters

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of analysing the integrated light (IL) low-resolution spectra of globular clusters (GCs) in the M31 and Centaurus A groups of galaxies. The sample consists of eight very metal-poor GCs ($\rm [Fe/H]\le -2$ dex) with high signal-to-noise ratio spectra acquired with the telescopes: the 6-m SAO RAS (BTA), the Southern African Large (SALT), and the 6.5-m Magellan (MMT). We study the influence of contribution of the horizontal branch stars on the hydrogen Balmer line profiles in the IL spectra. By modelling the Balmer lines, as well as the metal lines in the observed spectra, we determine the optimum parameters of stellar evolution isochrones and, consequently, the parameters of the atmospheres of the cluster stars. For all the studied GCs, the parameters of horizontal branch stars set by the selected isochrones, the corresponding ages, and carbon abundances are presented for the first time. The abundances of several other elements (Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Mn) were determined for five GCs for the first time. All the studied GCs have blue horizontal branches and are older than 10 Gyr. Their chemical abundances, with the exception of Mg and Mn, are in good agreement with the abundances of stars in the Galactic field. The reasons of low [Mg/Fe] and of high [Mn/Fe] are discussed. Study of the fundamental properties of stellar populations in old GCs facilitates a better understanding of the formation processes of their parent galaxies and nucleosynthesis in the early Universe.

In-situ versus accreted Milky Way globular clusters: a new classification method and implications for cluster formation

ABSTRACT We present a new scheme for the classification of the in-situ and accreted globular clusters (GCs). The scheme uses total energy E and z-component of the orbital angular momentum and is calibrated using the [Al/Fe] abundance ratio. We demonstrate that this classification results in two GC populations with distinct spatial, kinematic, and chemical abundance distributions. The in-situ GCs are distributed within the central 10 kpc of the Galaxy in a flattened configuration aligned with the Milky Way (MW) disc, while the accreted GCs have a wide distribution of distances and a spatial distribution close to spherical. In-situ and accreted GCs have different $\rm [Fe/H]$ distributions with the well-known bimodality present only in the metallicity distribution of the in-situ GCs. Furthermore, the accreted and in-situ GCs are well separated in the plane of $\rm [Al/Fe]-[Mg/Fe]$ abundance ratios and follow distinct sequences in the age–$\rm [Fe/H]$ plane. The in-situ GCs in our classification show a clear disc spin-up signature – the increase of median Vϕ at metallicities −1.3 &amp;lt; [Fe/H] &amp;lt; −1 similar to the spin-up in the in-situ field stars. This signature signals the MW’s disc formation, which occurred ≈11.7−12.7 Gyr ago (or at z ≈ 3.1−5.3) according to in-situ GC ages. In-situ GCs with metallicities of $\rm [Fe/H]\gtrsim -1.3$ were thus born in the MW disc, while lower metallicity in-situ GCs were born during early, turbulent, pre-disc stages of the evolution of the Galaxy and are part of its Aurora stellar component.

On the Identification of N-rich Metal-poor Field Stars with Future Chinese Space Station Telescope

During the long term evolution of globular clusters (GCs), some member stars are lost to the field. The recently found nitrogen-rich (N-rich) metal-poor field stars are promising candidates of these GC escapees, since N enhancement is the fingerprint of chemically enhanced populations in GCs. In this work, we discuss the possibility of identifying N-rich metal-poor field stars with the upcoming Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST). We focus on the main survey camera with NUV, u, g, r, i, z, y filters and slitless spectrograph with a resolution about 200. The combination of UV sensitive equipment and prominent N-related molecular lines in the UV band bodes well for the identification: the color–color diagram of (u − g) versus (g − r) is capable of separating N-rich field stars from normal halo stars, if metallicity can be estimated without using the information on u-band photometry. Besides, the synthetic spectra show that a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 is sufficient to identify N-rich field stars. In the near future, a large sample of N-rich field stars found by CSST, combined with state-of-the-art N-body simulations will be crucial to deciphering GC-Galaxy co-evolution.

On the effects of photoionization feedback on second-generation star formation in globular clusters of different masses

ABSTRACT We simulate the formation of second-generation (SG) stars in young clusters with masses of 105 and $10^6\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$ within $30\!-\!100\, \mathrm{Myr}$ after the formation of clusters. We assume the clusters move through a uniform interstellar medium with gas densities of 10−24 and $10^{-23}\, \mathrm{g\, cm}^{-3}$ and consider the stellar winds from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, gas accretion on to the cluster, ram pressure, star formation, and photoionization feedback of our stellar systems including binary stars. We find that SG stars can be formed only within the $10^6\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$ cluster in the high-density simulation, where the cluster can accrete sufficient pristine gas from their surrounding medium, leading to efficient cooling required for the ignition of SG formation and sufficient dilution of the AGB ejecta. Hence, our results indicate that a denser environment is another requirement for the AGB scenario to explain the presence of multiple populations in globular clusters. On the other hand, the ionizing feedback becomes effective in heating the gas in our low-density simulations. As a result, the clusters cannot accumulate a considerable amount of pristine gas at their centre. The gas mass within the clusters in these simulations is similar to that in young massive clusters (YMCs). Hence, our studies can provide a possible reason for the lack of gas, star formation, and SG stars in YMCs. Our results indicate that the ionizing stellar feedback is not a severe problem for SG formation; rather, it can help the AGB scenario to account for some observables.

Catalogue of model star clusters in the Milky Way and M31 galaxies

ABSTRACT Detailed understanding of the formation and evolution of globular clusters (GCs) has been recently advanced through a combination of numerical simulations and analytical models. We employ a state-of-the-art model to create a comprehensive catalogue of simulated clusters in three Milky Way (MW) and three Andromeda (M31) analogue galaxies. Our catalogue aims to connect the chemical and kinematic properties of GCs to the assembly histories of their host galaxies. We apply the model to a selected sample of simulated galaxies that closely match the virial mass, circular velocity profile, and defining assembly events of the MW and M31. The resulting catalogue has been calibrated to successfully reproduce key characteristics of the observed GC systems, including total cluster mass, mass function, metallicity distribution, radial profile, and velocity dispersion. We find that clusters in M31 span a wider range of age and metallicity, relative to the MW, possibly due to M31’s recent major merger. Such a merger also heated up the in-situ GC population to higher orbital energy and introduced a large number of ex-situ clusters at large radii. Understanding the impacts of galaxy mergers and accretion on the GC populations is crucial for uncovering the galaxy assembly histories.

Nitrogen-enriched, Highly Pressurized Nebular Clouds Surrounding a Super Star Cluster at Cosmic Noon

Strong lensing offers a precious opportunity for studying the formation and early evolution of super star clusters that are rare in our cosmic backyard. The Sunburst Arc, a lensed Cosmic Noon galaxy, hosts a young super star cluster with escaping Lyman continuum radiation. Analyzing archival Hubble Space Telescope images and emission line data from Very Large Telescope/MUSE and X-shooter, we construct a physical model for the cluster and its surrounding photoionized nebula. We confirm that the cluster is ≲4 Myr old, is extremely massive M ⋆ ∼ 107 M ⊙, and yet has a central component as compact as several parsecs, and we find a gas-phase metallicity Z = (0.22 ± 0.03)Z ⊙. The cluster is surrounded by ≳105 M ⊙ of dense clouds that have been pressurized to P ∼ 109 K cm−3 by perhaps stellar radiation at within 10 pc. These should have large neutral columns N HI > 1022.8 cm−2 to survive rapid ejection by radiation pressure. The clouds are likely dusty as they show gas-phase depletion of silicon, and may be conducive to secondary star formation if N HI > 1024 cm−2 or if they sink farther toward the cluster center. Detecting strong [N iii]λ λ 1750,1752, we infer heavy nitrogen enrichment . This requires efficiently retaining ≳500 M ⊙ of nitrogen in the high-pressure clouds from massive stars heavier than 60 M ⊙ up to 4 Myr. We suggest a physical origin of the high-pressure clouds from partial or complete condensation of slow massive star ejecta, which may have an important implication for the puzzle of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters.
