Changes in Adipose Tissue and Circulating Concentrations of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Midlife Women.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that bioaccumulate in adipose tissue. We investigated the relationship between change in central adiposity and changes in circulating concentrations of POPs over a 12-year period during the midlife. Serum concentrations of 34 PCBs and 19 OCPs were measured at four time points (1999/2000, 2002/03, 2005/06, 2009/11) in a cohort of midlife women, the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Linear mixed models were used to test the association between a change in waist circumference and a change in serum POP concentrations. Sixty-five women contributed 181 PCB observations. Fifty-nine women contributed 151 OCP observations. After adjustment for covariates (study site, race and ethnicity, age at baseline, parity), a one-inch (2.54 cm) increase in the change in waist circumference between visits was associated with a 4.9% decrease in the change in serum concentration of PCB 194 (95% CI: -8.0%, -1.6%). No associations were observed for other PCB congeners or the presence of OCPs. An increase in the difference in waist circumference over time was not associated with a change in the difference in serum concentrations of PCBs and OCPs except for PCB 194, possibly due to the high lipophilicity.

The impact of prenatal mercury on neurobehavioral functioning longitudinally assessed from a young age to pre-adolescence in a Spanish birth cohort

The objective is to investigate the relation between cord blood mercury concentrations and child neurobehavioural functioning assessed longitudinally during childhood until pre-adolescence. MethodsThe study involves mothers and their offspring engaged in the Spanish INMA birth cohort (n = 1147). Total mercury (THg) was determined in cord blood. Behavioural problems were assessed several times during childhood using the ADHD-DSM-IV at age 4, SDQ at ages 7 and 11, CPRS-R:S and the CBCL at ages 7, 9 and 11. Covariates were obtained through questionnaires during the whole period. Multivariate generalised negative binomial (MGNB) models or mixed-effects MGNB (for those tests with information at one or more time points, respectively) were used to investigate the relation between cord blood THg and the children's punctuations. Models were adjusted for prenatal fish intake. Effect modification by sex, prenatal and postnatal fish intake, prenatal fruit and vegetable intake, and maternal polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations (PCBs) was assessed by interaction terms. ResultsThe geometric mean ± standard deviation of cord blood THg was 8.22 ± 2.19 μg/L. Despite adjusting for fish consumption, our results did not show any statistically significant relationship between prenatal Hg and the children's performance on behavioural tests conducted between the ages of 4 and 11. Upon assessing the impact of various factors, we observed no statistically significant interaction. ConclusionDespite elevated prenatal THg exposure, no association was found with children's behavioural functioning assessed from early childhood to pre-adolescence. The nutrients in fish could offset the potential neurotoxic impact of Hg. Further birth cohort studies with longitudinal data are warranted.

Quantifying 209 Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners in Silicone Wristbands to Evaluate Differences in Exposure among Demolition Workers.

A social housing estate in Denmark was designated for demolition due to exceedance of guidance values for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in indoor air. Here, we deployed precleaned silicone wristbands (n = 46) among demolition workers of these contaminated buildings during single workdays while conducting various work tasks. We established a method to analyze all 209 PCBs in wristbands to identify prominent congeners of exposure and evaluate differences between tasks. Wristbands were extracted using microwave-assisted extraction and then concentrated for gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis. Twenty-nine chromatographic peaks representing 37 congeners were detected in every wristband, and tetra-CBs were the dominant homologue group. PCB-66, -44, and -70 were the most abundant congeners measured in worker wristbands, none of which are included within the typical seven indicator or WHO 12 PCBs. Workers who cut PCB-containing sealants had wristbands with the highest PCB concentrations (geometric mean ∑209PCBs = 1963 ng/g wristband), which were followed by those handling concrete elements on the building roof. Additionally, wristbands captured a broader range of PCBs than has been previously measured in air and serum samples. Taken together, our results highlight the importance of total congener analysis in assessing current PCB exposure in demolition work and the utility of wristbands for assessing these exposures.

Molecular insights into PCB neurotoxicity: Comparing transcriptomic responses across dopaminergic neurons, population blood cells, and Parkinson's disease pathology

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder influenced by genetic factors and environmental exposures. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a group of synthetic organic compounds, have been identified as potential environmental risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases, including PD.We explored PCB-induced neurotoxicity mechanisms using iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons and assessed their transcriptomic responses to varying PCB concentrations (0.01 μM, 0.5 μM, and 10 μM). Specifically, we focused on PCB-180, a congener known for its accumulation in human brains. The exposure durations were 24 h and 74h, allowing us to capture both short-term and more prolonged effects on gene expression patterns. We observed that PCB exposure led to the suppression of oxidative phosphorylation, synaptic function, and neurotransmitter release, implicating these pathways in PCB-induced neurotoxicity.In our comparative analysis, we noted similarities in PCB-induced changes with other PD-related compounds like MPP+ and rotenone. Our findings also aligned with gene expression changes in human blood derived from a population exposed to PCBs, highlighting broader inflammatory responses. Additionally, molecular patterns seen in iPSC-derived neurons were confirmed in postmortem PD brain tissues, validating our in vitro results.In conclusion, our study offers novel insights into the multifaceted impacts of PCB-induced perturbations on various cellular contexts relevant to PD. The use of iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons allowed us to decipher intricate transcriptomic alterations, bridging the gap between in vitro and in vivo findings. This work underscores the potential role of PCB exposure in neurodegenerative diseases like PD, emphasizing the need to consider both systemic and cell specific effects.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments and fish from dredged tributaries and creeks of river Ethiope, South-South, Nigeria: sources, risk assessment and bioaccumulation

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants that are ubiquitous in nature. In this study, the levels of PCBs were evaluated in sediments and fish samples obtained from dredged tributaries and creeks of River Ethiope. The work also assessed the possible relationship between the parameters and risks posed by polychlorinated biphenyls via several pollution indices. The mean concentrations of PPCBs on the sediments spanned from 645 – 3,977 µg/kg (wet season) to 252 – 1,219 µg/kg (dry season) dry weight. The concentrations of PCBs in fishes were 1,688 µg/kg (wet season) and 557 µg/kg (dry season). Higher bioaccumulation factors were observed with lower molecular weight PCBs than the higher ones (9 – Hexa – PCB, 8- Tetra- PCB). The results of the ecological risk (160 \leq Eri < 320), and human health risk (\geq 10-4 to 10-3-\leq 10-6), showed moderately to very high contamination and also moderately to very high cancer risk for children and adults. The strong positive correlation between PCB-114 and PCB-77, PCB-81, PCB-105 (r2 = 1.00, 0.99 & 1.00, p < 0.01) and the risks assessment values which ranged from 6.10 × 10-3 to 1.47 × 10-2 for children and 6.30 × 10-4 to 1.11 × 10-3 for adults (wet season), 1.04 × 10-3 to 2.99 × 10-2 for children and 7.80 × 10-5 to 5.61 × 10-1 for adults (dry season), showed rarely to adversely high potential ecological risk, biological effect and human health risk across the environment. The data show that higher levels of PCBs were observed in sediments and fish samples when compared with available standards. Considering the ILCR, hazard index, toxic equivalent, the sediments and fish obtained from these sites would be considered risky for humans. Dredging activities are majorly responsible for the high levels of PCBs across the sites. These have contributed significantly to the environmental status of the studied area.

Level of polychlorinated biphenyls in tumor and blood serum of breast cancer patients and control subjects from Punjab, Pakistan

The current study examined the level of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in tumor and blood serum of female breast cancer patients and control individuals recruited from Punjab, Pakistan. Breast tumor and blood serum from 40 patients and only blood serum from ten control subjects were obtained and concentration of 32 PCB congeners was analyzed through Gas chromatography coupled with Mass spectrophotometry. Sociodemographic variables of the patients along with essential clinical and haematological parameters were taken as covariates. Tumor reflects the highest median (min-max) concentration (ng g−1 lw) of ƩPCBs at 115.94 (0.05–17.75) followed by 16.53 (0.09–2.94) and 5.24 (0.01–0.59) in blood serum of cancer patients and control group respectively. Median concentrations (ng g−1 lw) of non-dioxine like ƩPCBs were considerably higher at 83.04, 32.89 and 4.27 compared to 13.03 and 3.50 and 0.97 for dioxin like ƩPCBs in tumor, serum of breast cancer patients and control subjects respectively. PCB-87 was most dominant congeners in tumor followed by PCB-170 and -82 whereas PCB-28 and -52 reflected greatest contribution in serum of breast cancer patients. Blood haemoglobin, potassium and chloride ions showed significant positive whereas body mass index reflect inverse relationship when regressed with ƩPCBs in tumor. This pioneer study depicts elevated concentrations of PCBs in patients compared to control, reflecting potential positive association of PCBs with breast cancer which need further confirmation. We concluded that chronic exposure to PCBs might be associated with an increasing number of breast cancer incidences in developing countries like Pakistan, which should be further elucidated through detail in vitro and in vivo studies.

Exposure of polychlorinated biphenyls via indoor dust particles and their health risks in Dhaka City, Bangladesh

This study is a pioneer evaluation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) within the indoor environment of the megacity Dhaka, Bangladesh. It assessed the occurrence, distribution and associated human health risks of selected 6 PCB congeners in four types of buildings (commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential). Dust samples were collected from the air conditioner filters and subsequently analyzed by Gas Chromatography- Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD). ∑6 PCB concentrations in commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential buildings ranged from 168 ± 59.42 to 3419 ± 1307, 590 ± 217 to 4669 ± 1731, 244 ± 89.08 to 2538 ± 779, and 161 ± 60.54 to 5413 ± 2136 ng/g, respectively. Considering the total PCB loads from each building type, the industrial category revealed the maximum concentration (19176 ± 1141 ng/g), followed by commercial, residential, and institutional, meaning industrial buildings are more susceptible to PCBs exposure. The heavy PCBs (hexa- and hepta-CBs) were dominant over the light PCBs (di-, tri-, and tetra-CBs). All hazard index (HI) values, except PCB-180, were below 1, suggesting a lower risk of non-carcinogenic effect. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (CR) values were below 10−03, indicating no high carcinogenic risk of the human population from PCB-contaminated dust through the exposure routes.

Soil Contamination and Biomarkers in Ucides cordatus in Mangroves from Baía de Todos os Santos, Bahia, Brazil

The aim of the present study was to analyze the response to exposure to pollutants (trace elements and organic pollutants) using biomarkers (micronucleated cells and glutathione S-transferase and catalase activity) in uçá crab Ucides cordatus. The study was carried out at four sites: Cacha Prego (CP) and Ponta Grossa (PG), areas with low anthropic activity; and Ilha de Maré (IM) and Pitinga (PT), areas affected by industrial activity. At each site, soil and crab samples were collected to analyze the contents of potentially toxic elements (total concentration and chemical partitioning of trace elements), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Both total concentrations and geochemical fractions of Cu, Zn, and Ni in soils were significantly higher in IM. Likewise, higher reactive Pb contents were observed in mangroves both in IM and in PG. Values above quality limits were observed for organic pollutants (PAHs) in soils from CP and PT, while PCB contents were below the maximum permissible levels. Metals in crabs also showed spatial variations, with higher Cu concentrations in all tissues in IM and PT and higher Ni concentrations in hepatopancreas in PT during the dry season. PAH values in crabs did not show spatial variations; however, crustaceans with contents above maximum limits in their muscle tissue were found in CP. Crabs from the Baia de Todos Santos showed different responses in biomarker expression, with higher enzymatic activity and greater numbers of micronucleated cells in crabs from IM, suggesting oxidative stress and genotoxicity in this mangrove forest.

Centurial deposition records of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in sediment cores from a plateau deep-water lake of China: Significance of anthropogenic impacts, transformation signals and ecological risks revealed by full congener analysis

Lake Fuxian, the largest deep freshwater lake in China, has been suffering from increasing ecological and environmental issues along with the rapid urbanization and industrialization in the past 40 years. To better understand the historical pollution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Lake Fuxian, comprehensive analyses of 209 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were conducted in two intact sediment cores (Core V1 and Core V2). The total mass concentrations of PCBs ranged from 7.60 to 31.47 ng/g (dry weight basis) and 5.55 to 28.90 ng/g during the period of 1908–2019 in Core V1 and 1924–2019 in Core V2, respectively. PCBs exhibited a consecutive increasing trend from 1940s to 2019 in Core V1. The temporal trend of PCBs in Core V2 basically matched to the history of PCB usage and prohibition in China (increasing from 1940s to mid-1960s, a remarkable drop in mid-1970s, and then increasing until 2019). Moreover, low-chlorinated PCBs were dominant among PCB homologues. Mono-CBs, di-CBs, tri-CBs and tetra-CBs accounted for 86.71 %–98.57 % in sediment segments. The PCB sources included unintentional emission and atmospheric deposition, as well as biological transformation. The total mass concentrations of OCPs ranged from 0.74 to 3.82 ng/g in Core V1 and 0.35 to 2.23 ng/g in Core V2, respectively. Similar trend was observed in the two sediment cores with peaks in the early 1990s. The predominant OCPs were γ-hexachlorohexane (γ-HCHs), dieldrin and p,p′-DDD. The ecological risks posed by PCBs and p-p′-DDD in Lake Fuxian were relatively low. In contrast, dieldrin might pose a potential threat to exposed organisms and apparently adverse ecological effects were caused by γ-HCH. This study will provide important baseline information on historical POPs contamination of Lake Fuxian.

Modeled Pathways and Fluxes of PCB Dechlorination by Redox Potentials.

Dechlorination is one of the main processes for the natural degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in an anaerobic environment. However, PCB dechlorination pathways and products vary with PCB congeners, types of functional dechlorinating bacteria, and environmental conditions. The present study develops a novel model for determining dechlorination pathways and fluxes by tracking redox potential variability, transforming the complex dechlorination process into a stepwise sequence. The redox potential is calculated via the Gibbs free energy of formation, PCB concentrations in reactants and products, and environmental conditions. Thus, the continuous change in the PCB congener composition can be tracked during dechlorination processes. The new model is assessed against four measurements from several published studies on PCB dechlorination. The simulation errors in all four measurements are calculated between 2.67 and 35.1% under minimum (n = 0) and maximum (n = 34) numbers of co-eluters, respectively. The dechlorination fluxes for para-dechlorination pathways dominate PCB dechlorination in all measurements. Furthermore, the model also considers multiple-step dechlorination pathways containing intermediate PCB congeners absent in both the reactants and the products. The present study indicates that redox potential might be an appropriate indicator for predicting PCB dechlorination pathways and fluxes even without prior knowledge of the functional dechlorinating bacteria.

Organic Micropollutants in the Agricultural Chain of Production of Strawberries by Irrigation with Treated Wastewater and Assessment of Human Health Implications

Treated water reuse is vital for sustainable water management and reducing the strain on freshwater resources, particularly in agriculture, which has a great impact on freshwater withdrawal. Despite the benefits, the reuse of treated wastewater carries risks due to residual chemical and microbiological contaminants, such as the organic micropollutants polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are not fully removed by current treatment processes and can affect plant growth and human health when used for irrigation. This study focuses on monitoring the PAHs and PCBs in wastewater used for irrigating strawberries, assessing their transfer to crops and potential health risks. The effluents of four wastewater treatment plants were monitored for two years (2017 and 2018) and used to irrigate strawberries grown in plot installations. Effective and robust analytical methodologies (60–99% recoveries, optimal reproducibility) were developed for wastewater and strawberry analysis. The analysis of the treated wastewaters showed the presence of residual PAH and PCB concentrations at hundreds of ng/L. The strawberry crops were further analyzed to measure the PAHs and PCBs. Since two PAHs were present in strawberries, a risk assessment was performed (EPA methodology), finding that the residual contamination of treated waters does not pose a significant health risk, for both adults and children, through the consumption of fruits.

Investigation of organic contaminants in the blubber of a blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) first stranded on the coast of Taiwan.

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the blubber of a stranded blue whale found on the coast of Taiwan. The analysis included polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The whale exhibited evident signs of emaciation, including low body weight, reduced blubber fat content, and thin blubber thickness. The dominant fatty acid type detected in the blubber was short-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (SC-MUFA), known to aid in thermoregulation. Stable isotope ratios indicated that the blue whale occupied a lower trophic position compared to a fin whale, suggesting its proximity to krill habitats in the Southern Ocean for feeding. The average concentrations of DDTs (1089.2 ± 4.7ng/g lw; ΣDDT) and PCBs (1057.1 ± 49.8ng/g lw) in the blubber were almost one order of magnitude higher than PAHs (41.7 ± 10.0ng/g lw), HCB (70.6 ± 2. ng/g lw), and PBDEs (7.2 ± 1.2ng/g lw). Pollutant concentrations in this individual blue whale were comparable to levels found in Norway, higher than those found in Chile, and notably lower than those found in Canada and Mexico. Calculating the biomagnification factor (BMF) for the POPs from krill (Euphausia superba) to the blue whale revealed significant bioaccumulation of pollutants in this particular whale. Additional research is imperative to achieve a thorough comprehension of bioaccumulation of POPs and their potential toxicological impacts on whale health.

Characterization of persistent organic contaminants in the atmosphere of Gadani's ship breaking yards and its surrounding: Implications for sustainable ship recycling practices

Gadani is internationally renowned for its extensive ship-breaking operations, positioning it as one of the globe's primary ship-breaking hubs. A comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the presence of organic contaminants in the air within Gadani, encompassing the areas surrounding ship-breaking facilities, proximate residential settlements, and adjacent roadways. Passive air samplers were employed to collect a total of 30 air samples. The analytical results unveiled a notably elevated concentration of specific organic compounds, with a pronounced prevalence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at the ship-breaking yard. Notably, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and DDE were detected at substantially lower levels. In particular, sites in close proximity to ship-breaking activities exhibited elevated concentrations of PCBs (Σ7PCB 0.065429 to 7.345714 ng/sample), PAHs (Σ8PAH 2.44 to 134.23 ng/sample), and SCCPs (0.18 to 25.6 ng/sample). Conversely, DDTs and DDE demonstrated higher concentrations near residential settlements. The evaluation of Molecular Diagnostic Ratios for PAHs revealed anthracene/anthracene + phenanthrene ratios of 0.88, 0.69, and 0.5 for ship-breaking areas, roadside locations, and community surroundings, respectively. Furthermore, the benz[a]anthracene/benz-[a]anthracene + chrysene molecular ratios were measured at 0.77 (ship-breaking sites), 0.82 (roadside), and 0.83 (community), respectively. The molecular ratio of fluoranthene/fluoranthene + pyrene at ship-breaking sites was 0.23, while roadside and community ratios were 0.36 and 0.89, respectively. These findings underscore the significant contribution of ship-recycling activities to the atmospheric release of SCCPs, PCBs, and PAHs, emphasizing the global imperative for responsible ship recycling practices.

Occurrence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Fogwater at Urban, Suburban, and Rural Sites in Northeast France between 2015 and 2021

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exist in the atmosphere in the vapor and particulate phases, as well as in solubilized form in fog/rain/cloud waters. In the current paper, fogwater samples are collected during 42 events between 2015 and 2021 at four different sites (Strasbourg, Geispolsheim, Erstein, Cronenbourg) in the Alsace region. Organics are extracted using liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) supported on a solid cartridge (XTR Chromabond), and then analyzed by gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The total PAHs and PCBs concentrations in fog samples vary between 0.58 and 6.7 µg L−1 (average of 2.70 µg L−1), and 0.14 and 15.5 µg L−1 (average of 2.75 µg L−1). Low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs are predominant and highly detectable compared to high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs, while pentachloro-biphenyls are the dominant PCB congener. The PAHs and PCBs concentrations have increased over the sampling years at all sites, except for a slight decrease in PCBs level at Geispolsheim. A diagnostic ratio (DR) and principal component analysis (PCA) are applied to suggest potential contamination sources at Strasbourg metropolitan. Their results reveal that PAHs derive from a mixture of pyrogenic activities, while PCBs mainly come from industrial activities. The results also reveal, in some cases, inter-site variability for simultaneous and successive fog events.

Accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls in the ovaries of deep-sea chemosynthetic clam Phreagena okutanii

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) persistently pollute marine ecosystems even though their production has been discontinued decades ago. Deep-sea organisms have been shown to accumulate PCBs and other persistent organic compounds; however, the extent of contamination and its effects remain poorly understood. Here, we measured PCB concentrations in separated organs of non-feeding bivalve clams belonging to Phreagena, a taxon representative of deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems. The highest concentrations of PCBs were detected in the ovaries. We also examined surface sediments of the clam habitat and observed concentrations comparable to those in the sediments of the seas around Japan, including shallow waters. The results showed that PCBs from the environment penetrate Phreagena clams through the body surface and accumulate in the female reproductive system. This raises concerns about a potentially severe direct impact on the survival of vulnerable and highly endemic deep-sea chemosynthetic bivalves.

Distribution of Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Food of Animal Origin in Croatia.

Pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental pollutants. When entering the food chain, they can represent a public health problem due to their negative effects on health. In this study, concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), pyrethroids, carbamates, and PCBs-a total 73 compounds-were determined in a total of 2268 samples of fat tissues (beef, pork, sheep, goat, poultry, game, horse, rabbit) and processed fat, meat, and processed meat products collected in Croatia during an 8-year period. In fatty tissues, 787 results exceeded the limits of quantification (LOQ): 16 OCPs, eight OPPs, six pyrethroids, one carbamate, and seven PCBs. The most positive results in fat samples were found for OCPs, with a frequency of quantification in the range of 57.5-87.5%. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) were quantified in the highest percentages, in the ranges of 5.5-66.7% and 5.4-55.8%. Concentrations above the MRL values were determined for chlorpyrifos in pork fat and for resmethrin in six fat samples and one pâté. In 984 samples of meat and meat products, only 62 results exceeded the LOQ values. The highest frequency of quantification was determined for OCPs (25 samples), of which 40% were DDT isomers (60% DDE). Frequency quantifications of PCBs in fat samples were between 7.23 and 36.7%. An evaluation of the health risk assessment showed that the consumption of fat, meat, and meat products does not pose a threat to consumer health, since all EDI values were well below the respective toxicological reference values.

Health risk assessment and development of human health ambient water quality criteria for PCBs in Taihu Basin, China

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with carcinogenicity and extensively found in diverse environmental mediums. The Taihu Basin is one of the most economically developed regions in China, and it has also caused a lot of historical legacy and unconscious emissions of PCBs, posing a threat to the health of people in the region. This study counted the concentrations of PCBs in five environmental media (water, soil, air, dust, and food) in the Taihu Basin from 2000 to 2020 and used Monte Carlo simulation to simulate the multi-channel exposure of PCBs in people of different ages (children, teenagers, and adults), and evaluated their noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. Finally, the human health ambient water quality standards (AWQC) for PCBs were obtained using regional exposure parameters and bioaccumulation factors. The results showed that the pollution of PCBs in the Taihu Basin was relatively serious in China. The concentration of PCBs in dust is higher than other environmental media. And exposure to water and food is the main exposure pathway for PCBs in the population of the region. Besides, PCBs pose no noncarcinogenic risk to people in this region, but their carcinogenic risk to residents exceeds the safety threshold. Among the three population groups, adults have the highest risk of cancer, and prevention measures need to be taken by controlling the intake of related foods and the concentration of PCBs in water. The following human health AWQC values of the PCBs in Taihu Basin is 3.2 × 10−9 mg/L.

Polychlorinated Naphthalenes in Foods from the French Market: Occurrence, Dietary Exposure, and Evaluation of Relative Contributions to Dioxin-like Contaminants.

Despite the growing interest in PCNs and the dioxin-like toxicity exhibited by a number of congeners, a comprehensive assessment of their contribution to the cocktail of dioxin-like contaminants is still lacking. To address such a shortcoming, this study investigated the PCN contamination in foodstuffs recently acquired in France, together with that of the regulatory polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCNs were ubiquitous at levels (∑70 PCNs = 2.5-150 pg g-1 wet weight) similar to those reported in other countries, with maximum concentrations observed in fish and fishery products from the North-East Atlantic Ocean. Their congener patterns further suggested unintentional releases of PCNs, while those of the other foodstuffs were correlated to the historical PCN profiles. Low risk from dietary exposure was estimated (∑70 PCNs-EDIs of 60-360 pg kg-1 bw d-1, ∑24 PCNs-TEQ-EDIs of 8 × 10-3-2.2 × 10-2 pg TEQ kg-1 bw d-1), with milk and dairy products being the highest contributors, followed by meat and meat products. Finally, the rather high contributions of PCNs to the total PCNs+PCDD/Fs+PCBs concentrations (0.9-50%, average of 9%) and the toxic equivalents (0.2-24%, average of 5%) show that these substances are not minor components of the PCNs+PCDD/Fs+PCBs cocktail.

Quantitative thermodynamic exposure assessment of PCBs available to sandworms (Alitta virens) in activated carbon remediated sediment during ongoing sediment deposition.

Marine mesoscale studies with sandworms (Alitta virens) were conducted to isolate important processes governing the exposure and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at contaminated sediment sites. Ex situ equilibrium sampling with silicone-coated jars, and in situ passive sampling with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were used to determine the performance of an activated carbon (AC) amendment remedy applied to the bed sediment. A quantitative thermodynamic exposure assessment ('QTEA') was performed, showing that PCB concentrations in polymers at equilibrium with the surficial sediment were suited to measure and assess the remedy effectiveness with regard to PCB bioaccumulation in worms. In practice, monitoring the performance of sediment remedies should utilize a consistent and predictive form of polymeric sampling of the sediment. The present study found that ex situ equilibrium sampling of the surficial sediment was the most useful for understanding changes in bioaccumulation potential as a result of the applied remedy, during bioturbation and ongoing sediment and contaminant influx processes. The ultrathin silicone coatings of the ex situ sampling provided fast equilibration of PCBs between the sediment interstitial water and the polymer, and the multiple coating thicknesses were applied to confirm equilibrium and the absence of surface sorption artifacts. Overall, ex situ equilibrium sampling of surficial sediment could fit into existing frameworks as a robust and cost-effective tool for contaminated sediment site assessment.

Screening and optimization of interpolation methods for mapping soil-borne polychlorinated biphenyls

There is yet no scientific consensus, and for now, on how to choose the optimal interpolation method and its parameters for mapping soil-borne organic pollutants. Take the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for instance, we present the comparison of some classic interpolation methods using a high-resolution soil monitoring database. The results showed that empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK) has the highest accuracy for predicting the total PCB concentration, while root mean squared error (RMSE) in inverse distance weighting (IDW) is among the highest in these interpolation methods. The logarithmic transformation of non-normally distributed data contributed to enhance considerably the semivariogram for modeling in kriging interpolation. The increasing of search neighborhood reduced IDW's RMSE, but slightly affected in ordinary kriging (OK), while both of them resulted in over smooth of prediction map. The existence of outliers made the difference between two points increase sharply, and thereby weakening spatial autocorrelation and decreasing the accuracy. As predicted error increased continuously, the prediction accuracy of different interpolation methods reached unanimity gradually. The attempt of the assisted interpolation algorithm did not significantly improve the prediction accuracy of the IDW method. This study constructed a standardized workflow for interpolation, which could reduce human error to reach higher interpolation accuracy for mapping soil-borne PCBs.
