Assessment of Factors Affecting the Safety Performance in Construction Projects

Abstract: This study analyzes the 152 responses of clients, contractors, and consultants within the construction industry in order to investigate safety performance factors within the construction industry. The data for the study were gathered through the use of a structured questionnaire, and statistical analysis, including ANOVA tests, was performed on it in order to evaluate the possibility of differences between the respondents in terms of their experience and designation. The findings highlight significant differences in perceptions among the various groups and suggest that areas of focus for improvement include safety training, availability of equipment, communication, and adherence to safety standards. The study emphasizes the significance of ongoing evaluation and improvement of safety measures and advocates for increased attention to the cultivation of a culture that places an emphasis on safety in construction projects. These findings provide valuable insights for improving overall safety performance and contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of safety in the construction industry, which is a sector that is currently understudied.

Integrated agile facility management model for improving performance in construction projects

Facilities management (FM) has many challenges related to facilities requirements, unique services, and a need for actions to achieve customer/end-user/clients’ expectations. There is poor communication among stakeholders, weaknesses, inflexibility in business realities, and difficulty engaging decision-makers and other key partners. Adopting an agile philosophy in facilities management can improve the value and achieve quality and stakeholder satisfaction. The main objective of this article is to explore a guideline on applying agile philosophy in facilities management to achieve flexibility in management and improve performance. The papers published between 2000 and 2022 had been selected. Content analysis was used.to complement the qualitative findings. This article focuses on academic articles including subject areas: engineering, decision-making, and operations. The conceptual model is supported by current theories, literature and previous empirical studies from facilities management, agile philosophy, service quality, and stakeholder satisfaction. The major finding is the disclosure of a framework for evaluating agile philosophy in organizations by linking the agile mindset to facilities management practices. The results also revealed a conceptual framework for using agile philosophy in facilities management to achieve value and stakeholder satisfaction. This study is a review of theories and empirical studies. However, the previous studies were very limited and affected access to information widely. Therefore, it is preferable to conduct research and experimental studies on the application of agile philosophy in facilities management. Ultimately, using an agile philosophy in facilities management helps to achieve value and stakeholder satisfaction.

Investigating the Factors Impacting the Performance of Small and Medium-Scale Irrigation Construction Projects in Eastern Amhara

Recently due to their economic value, there has been a rapid increment of water work construction projects in Ethiopia. However, there is a problems regarding their performance, like cost overrun, time overrun, low productivity & low quality. The same is true for water work projects that are constructed by Amhara Water Works Construction Enterprise. This research work aims to identify and evaluate the main factors affecting the performance of small & medium-scale irrigation construction projects in eastern Amhara region-Ethiopia. To achieve the objectives of this research study, five irrigation construction projects were targeted as the population of the study and both qualitative & quantitative data were collected by desk study, questioner survey, and interviews. Total 75 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and out of these 75 distributed questionnaires, 70 (93.33%) questionnaires were returned. The data collected were analysed using SPSS version 25 and the significance factors were ranked by using their Relative Importance Index (RII). The results show that the top ten critical factors that affecting performance agreed upon by all parties were an escalation of material prices, unavailability of resources, number of disputes between owner and project parties, quality of equipment or machinery and raw materials, unavailability of competent staff, financial constraints, material and equipment cost, local climate conditions cost of variation orders and leadership skills for project manager.

The relationship between construction workers’ emotional intelligence and safety performance

PurposeConstruction enterprises are achieving the goal of production safety by increasingly focusing on the critical factor of “human” and the impact of individual characteristics on safety performance. Emotional intelligence is categorized into three models: skill-based, trait-based and emotional learning systems. However, the mechanism of action and the internal relationship between emotional intelligence and safety performance must be further studied. This study intends to examine the internal mechanism of emotional intelligence on safety performance in construction projects, which would contribute to the safety management of construction enterprises.Design/methodology/approachA structural equation model exploring the relationship between emotional intelligence and safety performance is developed, with political skill introduced as an independent dimension, situational awareness presented as a mediator, and management safety commitment introduced as a moderator. Data were collected by a random questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 26.0. The structural equation model tested the mediation hypothesis, and the PROCESS macro program tested the moderated mediation hypothesis.FindingsThe results showed that construction workers' emotional intelligence directly correlates with safety performance, and situational awareness plays a mediating role in the relationship between emotional intelligence and the safety performance of construction workers. Management safety commitment weakens the positive predictive relationships between emotional intelligence and situational awareness and between emotional intelligence and safety performance.Originality/valueThis research reveals a possible impact of emotional intelligence on safety performance. Adding political skills to the skill-based model of emotional intelligence received a test pass. Political skill measures the sincere and cooperative skills of construction workers. Using people as a critical element plays a role in the benign mechanism of “Emotional Intelligence – Situational Awareness – Safety Performance.” Improving emotional intelligence skills through training, enhancing situational awareness, understanding, anticipation and coordination and activating management environment factors can improve safety performance. Construction enterprises should evaluate and train workers' emotional intelligence to improve workers' situational awareness and safety performance.

Understanding the effects of variation orders on construction project success: insights from the Jordanian context

The construction industry is renowned for its complexity, involving multiple variables, stakeholders, and uncertainties. Variation Orders (VOs) have emerged as crucial factors affecting construction projects, yet their implications extend beyond time and cost. This study delves into the significance of VOs impacts on construction project performance and success, particularly within the context of Jordan. 97 construction professionals from different Jordanian organizations participated to determine the prevalent VOs impacts and those severely affecting project performance and success. The results indicated that the most significant effects of VOs are time overrun, cost overrun, extra money paid for contractors, productivity degradation, quality decrease, and stakeholder dissatisfaction. The factor analysis emphasized the interdependencies among the investigated impacts. The current study holds significant importance for practitioners and researchers in construction and project management. It empowers practitioners with tools to manage projects more effectively by defining the critical importance of schedule, cost, productivity, quality, and stakeholder management. It emphasizes their role as foundational elements for project success and supports researchers in advancing knowledge and practical solutions for the challenges faced in the dynamic construction environment. This study recommends investigating other project types and VO attributes to reach a comprehensive understanding, and then develop an integrated solution.

Development of a Performance Assessment Model for Contractors in Saudi Arabian Construction Projects

Saudi Arabia leads the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in the construction industry, with 63% of the region’s future projects and $1.4 trillion in building and transportation projects. Previous studies have shown that 60% of construction projects are behind the schedule. One of the reasons behind this delay is the inappropriate selection of contractors for construction projects; therefore, the development of a contractor performance assessment model is needed for construction projects in Saudi Arabia. The proposed model includes the major key performance indicators (KPIs) used to measure contractors’ performance in construction projects. Afterward, a questionnaire is conducted with construction professionals to recommend the important KPIs to consider while developing the model. The analytic hierarchy process decision-making technique is applied for assessing relative priorities among the identified KPIs based on expert or decision-maker consensus. The results show that the time category is the most important in selecting the best contractor, emphasizing the significance of timely project completion.

Cost Management Practices and Performance of Ministry of Education Funded School Construction Projects in Marigat Sub County

Cost approaches to management are necessary for a construction project to operate more efficiently. This study looks at the intricate relationships that exist between cost-control strategies and the success of initiatives to develop the county of Marigat's educational infrastructure. This research attempts to determine the critical connections between cost management strategies and construction project results in light of the challenges associated with successfully completing projects within budgetary limits. The Marigat Sub County Ministry of Education Office reports that 23 out of 32 school construction projects—or 71% of the total are either stopped or falling short of expectations. Therefore, the problem addressed in this study is the significant of cost management practices employed in school construction projects and their influence on construction project performance within Marigat Sub County. The study's overall goal was to examine how cost management practices affect the performance of ministry of education-funded school construction projects in Marigat Sub County. Its specific goals are to evaluate the impact of project resource planning, project cost estimation, and project schedule planning on these construction projects, as well as the impact of each on the ministry of education-funded school construction projects in Marigat Sub County. The findings of the study contributed to existing research by giving insight and evidence-based knowledge regarding cost management practices on school construction projects and how this involvement influences the successful completion and performance school projects. The scope of this research was focused on 132 school projects funded by the Ministry of Education in Marigat Sub County, Baringo. The research adopted a descriptive survey design. The 132 educational programmes in Marigat Sub County that are financed by the ministry of education was the target population. The Yamane formula was used to determine the sample size of the respondents given the total population and the desired level of confidence to get 99 school projects, then a random sampling technique was used to select those 99 school projects from the target population. The study used a questionnaire as data collection tool that was administered to project managers who are school principals. Analysis of data was both descriptive and inferential statistics. The mean score of key performance indicators of project resource planning, cost estimation, cost budgeting, and cost control were above 3.5 out of a maximum of 5 respectively indicating that there was involvement of cost management practices in public school construction projects. The regression model predicts that project resource planning, project cost budgeting and project cost control leads to a .154, .208 and .225 increase in project performance respectfully while project cost estimation leads to .116 decrease. In conclusion, the researcher found that cost management practices influence the performance of ministry of education-funded school construction projects in Marigat Sub County. It is therefore recommended that managers of public-school projects to ensure there is proper cost management practices in undertaking of school construction projects.

Does owners’ leadership matter to relational behavior in mega construction projects? A role orientation perspective

PurposeAlthough researchers have long recognized the importance of participating organizations’ (POs) relational behavior for mega construction projects (MCPs) performance, relational behavior may not be executed by POs without effective leadership from project owners. However, little is known about the mechanisms linking owners’ leadership styles to POs’ relational behavior. This study draws on full range leadership theory and role theory to examine the relationships between owners’ leadership styles (i.e. transformational and transactional) and relational behavior. POs’ role orientations (i.e. normative and economic) are considered as potential mediators.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 175 managers deeply involved in MCPs. Hierarchical regression model and bootstrapping methods were performed on the data to examine the direct effects of owners’ leadership on POs’ relational behavior and the mediating effects of POs’ role orientations.FindingsThe results revealed that both owners’ transformational and transactional leadership positively affect POs’ relational behavior, despite the former being higher than the latter, and indirectly influence relational behavior via POs’ normative and economic role orientation, respectively.Practical implicationsThis study provides a clear picture of how owners’ leadership can motivate POs’ relational behavior to achieve high-quality inter-organizational relationships in MCPs. The findings can guide owners’ top manager selection by prioritizing those with transformational leadership, which is beneficial to achieving high-level relational behavior of POs. The results also imply that owners should pay greater attention to cultivating POs’ normative role orientation by encouraging teamwork and open communication to enhance their implementation of relational behavior.Originality/valueUnlike previous research focusing more on intra-organizational leader–follower relationship within one PO, this study is one of the first to empirically confirm owners’ leadership as a critical antecedent of POs’ relational behavior, thus enhancing the theoretical understanding of inter-organizational relationship management in MCPs. Based on role theory, this study considers a novel organizational psychology mechanism, i.e. POs’ role orientations, as the mediator to unravel how owners’ leadership affects POs’ relational behavior, which was rarely invoked in MCP leadership literature.

In recent years, China has actively and steadily expanded the effective investment in rural transportation infrastructure, actively guided social capital to participate in rural development, promoted the combination of PPP model and all aspects of rural areas, and implemented a new round of rural road construction and transformation. Rural highway construction is an important measure to promote rural economic development. Because of the wide range of rural construction in China and the huge capital investment and demand, it is necessary to build a scientific and comprehensive evaluation index system to evaluate the performance of rural highway construction projects, analyze the evaluation results, and put forward feasible suggestions to help decision makers grasp the benefits and effects of construction, and take targeted measures to guide and promote the positive development of rural highways. Taking the northern extension project of XL highway as an example, this paper constructs a performance evaluation index system, which can provide reference for the project management of XL highway and other highway projects.

Importance and Performance Analysis of Construction Management Activities in Construction Projects in Pulang Pisau Regency Based on Contractor Perceptions

Construction is a system that always involves many parties from the planning, implementation (doing), until controlling which in the process can cause problems that will affect project performance. In the implementation of construction projects, problems often occur, including the extension of work execution time, delays, additional project costs and work results that are not in accordance with the planned quality. This study aims to identify and make instruments measuring the effect of management activities on the performance of construction projects in Pulang Pisau Regency. There are 120 variables used to measure project management performance from two viewpoints of the level of satisfaction/perception and interests/expectations. Then an evaluation using the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method is performed. From the results of the analysis by the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method it can be seen that project management activity variables are the top priority that need to be improved in order to improve construction project performance, including 12 variables which are divided into 4 variables each at the planning stage, 3 variables at the implementation stage, and 5 variables at the control stage.

Abstract: The primary goal of this study is to assess and explore time, cost, and quality management within the construction industry. The purpose of the study is to identify factors that impact time, cost, and quality management in construction projects. Quality stands out as a crucial aspect of all projects, and the success of construction projects hinges significantly on the performance of quality. However, accomplishing this objective is undeniably a challenging task. This study specifically investigates the factors that influence the control of cost and time in construction projects. The aim is to propose recommendations that can assist stakeholders in achieving enhanced cost and time performance in construction projects. The study acknowledges the intricate nature of balancing these key elements and strives to contribute valuable insights for improving overall project outcomes in the construction industry. This study is limited to the perspective of an appropriate sample of professionals in the construction industry. The data collection method involves the use of questionnaires and interviews, which will be subject to descriptive statistical analysis utilizing percentages, mean scores, and frequency of collected data. The primary factors influencing time, cost, and quality in a construction project were identified as planned and scheduled deficiencies, fraudulent methods, kickbacks, and the absence of clear evaluation standards. The research aims to scrutinize the factors that have both positive and adverse effects on construction projects. The study recommends that the construction team work diligently to ensure effective management of time, cost, and quality in construction projects. The objective of this study is to analyze how those involved in project teams perceive time, cost, and quality management on construction projects. Conclusions are drawn, and recommendations are made regarding time, cost, and quality management estimates for construction projects. In the construction industry, the concept of risk management is a less popular technique. There are three main stages in the systematic approach to risk management in the construction industry. A questionnaire, developed based on identified factors, was used to gather the opinions of construction experts. Quality is a critical aspect of any project, especially in construction. The success of construction projects is largely determined by the quality of work. Unfortunately, the construction industry is facing quality issues that result in ineffective and inefficient projects, leading to cost overruns, delays, and excessive rework. To address this issue, a research study was conducted to examine the factors that have positive and negative impacts on construction projects. A questionnaire was developed to gather feedback from construction experts, and statistical analysis tools such as chisquare and weighted mean method (WMM) were used to rank the significance of these factors. The definition of quality can vary depending on the perspective of those defining it. Some see it as meeting specific requirements, while others view it as delivering value for the price paid. For construction companies, quality is about satisfying customers and fulfilling their needs while staying within budget. Quality is an important factor in construction projects, as it can lead to cost overruns and delays. Quality control (QC) and quality assurance systems are established to meet specific requirements. In the construction industry, QC can be seen as achieving client satisfaction, managing costs, and allowing enough time to achieve the desired level of quality. An international standard organization (ISO) has developed a quality assurance system to improve quality and address quality-related issues. The ISO 9001 series has been created to apply to all types of organizations.

THE EFFECT OF PROJECT MANAGER COMPETENCE ON THE ACHIEVEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECT PERFORMANCE

The development of the construction services sector in Indonesia continues to experience rapid growth, encouraging construction industry players to have quality human resources. This research aims to identify project manager competency factors on construction projects in Banda Aceh City, analyse the relationship between these and project performance achievements, and evaluate their influence on construction project performance achievements in Banda Aceh City. The object of this research is the competency factors of project managers that influence construction project performance. This research was conducted at contractor companies domiciled in the Banda Aceh City area. The data sources used in this research are primary data and secondary data. The population of contractors at small, medium and large qualification levels is 71 contractors. The total sample was 42 contractors. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The variables used in this research include the independent variable (X) and the dependent variable (Y). The data analysis used in this research is descriptive, simple correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The research results show that knowledge, skills, and attitudes have a solid relationship. In contrast, management has a high relationship with project performance achievement. Overall, the project manager's competency factor significantly affects project performance, reaching 94.9%. Management is the most dominant competency factor influencing the achievement of project performance in Banda Aceh City. Thus, increasing the competence of project managers, especially in management, is expected to improve the quality of construction project implementation in the region.

Effects of Individual Client’s Competencies on Construction Project Performance: Mediating Participation Attitude and Partnership

Within a construction project, the clients are categorized as private individuals, private companies, public institutions, etc. In this research, the private client is identified as a non-professional individual building owner and is involved in making decisions and solving problems for successful construction project performance. However, irrational decision-making and conflicts frequently occur with project delay and poor performance because the individual clients are normally non-professionals and lack the capacity to lead various stakeholders on the project. This study analyzes the effects of the project managerial competencies of the private individual clients on the construction performance. The client’s competencies were defined as ‘personal’, ‘social’, and ‘professional’ factors, and participation attitude and partnership were used as the mediating factors. The offline survey was conducted with 241 building owners in South Korea. The result indicates that personal and professional competencies had a positive effect on project performance, whereas social competency did not have an effect. Personal competency had the greatest effect on participation attitude and partnership. Social and professional competencies had a positive effect on partnership, not participation attitude. Hence, this shows that the personal competencies of the building owner as the end user of the project related to cognition, planning, and decision-making are important for project success.

This research is pivotal for decoding the changing dynamics of construction management, where digital tools and platforms play a crucial role in achieving project success. The anticipated outcomes are poised to provide significant implications for construction industry professionals, guiding them in harnessing social media for enhanced project management and team cooperation.

Team commitment and performance of construction project in Nigerian construction industry

<p>Project success requires team commitment, which is a product of an encouraging culture of cooperation and teamwork among project team members. The research work aims to ascertain which components of team commitment affect the performance of construction projects in Nigeria. The research adopted a quantitative design where questionnaires were used for data collection. Out of 1233 questionnaires distributed, 975 were received with valid responses and used for data analysis. Data were analysed descriptively using percentage, mean score, and relative agreement index. The study showed the factors of team commitment having an effect on project performance, as rated by the respondents, to be: Normative component: “Project team members owe a great deal to this organisation”; “Members of the project team do not feel it is right to quit the project before completion”; “This organisation has a great deal of personal meaning for project team members”. Affective component: “This organisation deserves the loyalty of project team members”; “The project team considers the team’s problems as their own. Then, “One of the few negative consequences of leaving this organisation will be the scarcity of available alternatives” is for continuance. In conclusion, the emotional attachment of the team members and sense of obligation to the project team and construction organisation are the driving forces behind pushing for the successful outcome of projects within the Nigerian construction industry.</p>
