Unveiling the CoFe LDH generated by partial in situ conversion strategy: Synergistic effect of modified MXene and cationic vacancies for overall water splitting

It remains a challenge to utilize non-precious metal electrocatalysts to increase intrinsic activity and observe more active sites. Herein, we propose a simple partial in situ transformation strategy to form a novel MOF@CoFe LDH heterostructure by Co-MOF template-directed fabrication using modified MXene as substrate, and introduce metal cation vacancy defects on the as-prepared LDH surface to further enhance the performance of the catalysts. Density-functional theory calculations show that the electron transfer rate of a material can be tuned by modulating the electron diffusion phenomenon, thereby lowering the energy barrier of the catalytic reaction. Consistent with the expected results, the catalysts also showed excellent electrochemical performance with HER and OER reaching current densities of 10 mA cm−2 with overpotentials of only 201 mV and 197 mV, and Faraday efficiencies (FE) close to 100 %. Meanwhile, a cell overpotential of only 1.56 V is required to effectively drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in the two-electrode system, and the superior long-term stability of the material reveals its potential for cost reduction in large-scale industrial applications.

Advances in Two-Dimensional Ion-Selective Membranes: Bridging Nanoscale Insights to Industrial-Scale Salinity Gradient Energy Harvesting.

Salinity gradient energy, often referred to as the Gibbs free energy difference between saltwater and freshwater, is recognized as "blue energy" due to its inherent cleanliness, renewability, and continuous availability. Reverse electrodialysis (RED), relying on ion-selective membranes, stands as one of the most prevalent and promising methods for harnessing salinity gradient energy to generate electricity. Nevertheless, conventional RED membranes face challenges such as insufficient ion selectivity and transport rates and the difficulty of achieving the minimum commercial energy density threshold of 5 W/m2. In contrast, two-dimensional nanostructured materials, featuring nanoscale channels and abundant functional groups, offer a breakthrough by facilitating rapid ion transport and heightened selectivity. This comprehensive review delves into the mechanisms of osmotic power generation within a single nanopore and nanochannel, exploring optimal nanopore dimensions and nanochannel lengths. We subsequently examine the current landscape of power generation using two-dimensional nanostructured materials in laboratory-scale settings across various test areas. Furthermore, we address the notable decline in power density observed as test areas expand and propose essential criteria for the industrialization of two-dimensional ion-selective membranes. The review concludes with a forward-looking perspective, outlining future research directions, including scalable membrane fabrication, enhanced environmental adaptability, and integration into multiple industries. This review aims to bridge the gap between previous laboratory-scale investigations of two-dimensional ion-selective membranes in salinity gradient energy conversion and their potential large-scale industrial applications.

Use of omic heating technology in the process of processing fruits and vegetables. Overview of the subject field

The modern consumer prefers natural products with minimal processing, which allows maximum preservation of the nutritional value of the product and fresh taste and aroma. The purpose of this article is to review the results of studies concerning the effect of ohmic heating on the product in comparison with heat treatment and considering the combined use of this method with non-thermal technologies in the production of canned fruit and vegetables. The material for this study was 105 scientific publications. A search for scientific literature in English and Russian on the use of the ohmic heating technology in the process of processing fruits and vegetables was carried out in the bibliographic databases Scopus, Web of Science, as well as in other sources. The period 2010–2023 was adopted as the time frame for the review of scientific publications. To review the subject field of the study, an algorithm was used in accordance with the PRISMA protocol. A scientific search and review of scientific publications on the research topic showed a limited number of studies assessing the ohmic heating (OH) technology in the processing of fruits and vegetables. In the process of using this technology, electric current is applied, ensuring uniform and rapid release of heat inside the food matrix. OH has a shorter processing time, which helps preserve the organoleptic quality of the product and its nutritional value. Compared to heat treatment, the OH technology not only inactivates microorganisms and food enzymes, but also prevents overheating, which reduces the negative impact of temperature on the chemical composition of the product. Evaporation/concentration, dehydration/drying of fruit juices or purees using OH resulted in higher energy efficiency and reduced processing time compared to traditional processing methods. Despite many advantages, there are limitations to large-scale industrial application of the OH method, including corrosion of the electrodes, which can have a negative impact on the product, as well as uneven heating of some types of fruit and vegetable raw materials during continuous processing. The results of this review can be used in the process of conducting further scientific research, which is advisable to continue in order to determine specific processing parameters and eliminate uneven heating of food raw materials.

Experimental Study of Magnetron’s Power-Pulled Characteristic to Realize a Quasi-Dual-Frequency Microwave Output

This article presents experimental evidence demonstrating the feasibility of implementing a quasi-dual-frequency microwave signal generator using a 1 kW commercial magnetron. The injection-pulled magnetron may generate quasi-dual-frequency output with nearly identical amplitudes by injecting signal at specific powers and frequencies out of the Adler locking band. This generator offers the advantage of developing a large-power and tunable quasi-dual-frequency signal at low cost and with simple implementation. In the present study, a tunable quasi-dual-frequency signal with a frequency interval ranging from 0.48 MHz to 13.74 MHz is generated experimentally. Furthermore, the effects of anode voltage ripples on the dual-frequency outputs are experimentally investigated. An empirical relationship between the frequency interval and injection ratio is obtained and presented. In addition, neither the output power nor the efficiency of the magnetron in the dual-frequency mode decreases. This research is promising for improving microwave heating uniformity in large-scale industrial applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of SiO2-Based Graphene Nanoballs Using Copper-Vapor-Assisted APCVD for Thermoelectric Application.

This study describes a method by which to synthesize SiO2-based graphene nanoballs (SGB) using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) with copper vapor assistance. This method should solve the contamination, damage, and high costs associated with silica-based indirect graphene synthesis. The SGB was synthesized using APCVD, which was optimized using the Taguchi method. Multiple synthesis factors were optimized and investigated to find the ideal synthesis condition to grow SGB for thermoelectric (TE) applications. Raman spectra and FESEM-EDX reveal that the graphene formed on the silicon nanoparticles (SNP) is free from copper. The prepared SGB has excellent electrical conductivity (75.0 S/cm), which shows better results than the previous report. Furthermore, the SGB nanofillers in bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) nanocomposites as TE materials exhibit a significant increment in Seebeck coefficients (S) compared to the pure Bi2Te3 sample from 109 to 170 μV/K at 400 K, as well as electrical resistivity decrement. This approach would offer a simple strategy to improve the TE performance of commercially available TE materials, which is critical for large-scale industrial applications.

Revealing the mechanism of structure-electron effect in mechanochemistry-driven CuS-coupled layered g-C3N4 Schottky-junction for enhanced demercuration

The development of cost-effective heterojunctions with heightened affinity for mercury (Hg0) presents a promising approach for mercury abatement from stationary source emissions. In this study, one novel hierarchical porous Schottky heterojunction composed of CuS-coupled layered g-C3N4 (CuS-CN) was synthesised via a mechanochemistry-driven acetate route. The prepared CuS-CN heterojunction exhibited a considerable Hg0 accommodation capacity of 33.04 mg/g at 70 °C and a breakthrough threshold of 60 %, which was 40 % higher than that of CuS-CN(mix) prepared by simply mixing CuS and CN without forming a heterojunction interface. Additionally, the CuS-CN heterojunction demonstrated satisfactory applicability against various simulated stationary source exhausts. Furthermore, the reason for the unparalleled and enhanced demercuration performance of the CuS-CN heterojunction was systematically deduced via experimental studies and first-principles calculations. Under-coordinated disulfides (S22−) on the CuS-CN surface served as the primary active centre for the oxidation of Hg0 to Hg2+ and simultaneous bonding site for Hg2+ to form HgS. The well-developed electron transport network and narrow bandgap energy of the CuS-CN heterojunction enhanced charge separation and transfer from Hg0 and CN to CuS, accelerating Hg0 oxidation reaction, which resulted in an enhanced adsorption energy of −344.52 kJ/mol. Additionally, the CuS-CN heterojunction exhibited stronger Hg0 oxidation and weaker HgS adsorption properties, attributed to the lower bond strength of HgS on the CuS-CN surface and lower energy barrier for HgS desorption. Thus, this study highlighted the effectiveness of the CuS-CN heterojunction in Hg0 abatement and presented a promising strategy for the mechanochemical synthesis of mercury removal agents for large-scale industrial applications.

Cu-based bubble and ion sieve for ampere-level hydrogen evolution

Designing cheap, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under ampere-level current density is essential for the industrial water electrolysis technique. However, the large H2 bubbles produced at high current density decrease the activity and stability of the catalyst. Here, a self-supported electrode with porous yolk-shell CuNi@Cu electrocatalyst is obtained via an alternant electrodeposition and replacement reaction during the pulse electrodeposition process. The porous Cu shell can boost electrolyte diffusion and serve as an H2 bubble fining sieve to enhance the activity and stability of alkaline HER at high current density with the low overpotential of 326 mV @1 A cm−2. The CuNi@Cu electrocatalyst can work steadily for 1000 h at 1 A cm−2 with negligible attenuation. The porous Cu shell can also repel cations in natural seawater owing to the positively charged surface. The spontaneous alternant reaction paves an avenue to design electrocatalysts with porous yolk-shell structures for large-scale industrial applications.

Hierarchical electroactive ion permselective membrane with electrochemical switched ion pump effect for continuous lithium-ion recovery

Highly selective extraction of lithium ions (Li+) from salt-lake brines is crucial to mitigate lithium supply shortages. In this work, a novel electrochemically switched lithium ion permselective membrane (ESLPM) was rationally designed through an ingenious tactic with an electroactive layer of lithium manganate (LiMn2O4) as the active radical and a dense and positively charged polyamide (PA) on each side of polyethersulfone (PES) substrate for the rapid and selective separation of Li+ from salt-lake brines with high Mg/Li ratios. Here, the reversible uptake/release and enhancement electro-sorption selectivity of Li+ are controlled by changing the electrochemical potential of the membrane with an ion-pump effect coupling with the electric field to achieve the continuous recovery of Li+. As a result, the flux of Li+ in the optimum hierarchical ESLPM-240 of the electrochemically switched ion permselective (ESIP) membrane separation system reached 0.032 mol m−2 h−1 for the separation of Li+ from the salt lake brine with a high Mg/Li ratio (Mg2+/Li+ = 20), which is 25% higher than in electrodialysis (ED) system. Meanwhile, by constructing a hierarchical structure, the separation factor of Li+/Mg2+ was increased to 7.8 under the ESIP system, which is about 3.5 times higher that of PA layer, and about 2.2 times higher than that of the electroactive layer. In addition, theoretical calculation confirmed that electroactive LiMn2O4 and positively charged PA layers are more favorable for Li+ transport when compared to Mg2+. Besides, the ESLPM-240 exhibited excellent long-term stability, indicating that the proposed strategy is promising for large-scale industrial applications in the Li+ extraction from salt lakes.

Robust Superhydrophobic Composite Fabric with Self-Healing and Chemical Durability.

Superhydrophobic fabrics with multiple functions have become a research hotspot. However, it is challenging to make self-healing mechanically robust and eco-friendly superhydrophobic fabrics, which are limited by complex fabrication processes and excessive use of environmentally unfriendly solvents during fabrication. Herein, inspired by the secretion of a waxy substance from the surface of lotus leaves to restore water repellency, self-healing superhydrophobic composite fabrics (as-synthesized PA66/6-PET@Tico) are obtained by constructing a papillary TiO2 and tentacle-like fluorinated acrylate polymer (FCB015) coating on polyester-nylon composite fabrics using two-step hydrothermal method. The result indicates that PA66/6-PET@Tico with hierarchical micro/nanostructure exhibits excellent superhydrophobic and self-healing properties. Compared with FCB015 coated fabric, the contact angles (CA) of water and soybean oil rise to 172.2° and 166.8° from 137.4° and 98.8°, respectively. After mechanical abrasion, PA66/6-PET@Tico recovers a water contact angle (WCA) of 165.6° at room temperature. The WCA remains higher than 155° after 18h of chemical corrosion. Furthermore, the bacterial inhibition rates of PA66/6-PET@Tico for Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli are 99.90 and 98.38%, respectively. In this work, a new idea is proposed for designing a simple and effective self-healing superhydrophobic coating, expecting to promote the large-scale industrial production and application of functional surfaces.

Excelzyme: A Swiss University-Industry Collaboration for Accelerated Biocatalyst Development.

Excelzyme, an enzyme engineering platform located at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, is dedicated to accelerating the development of tailored biocatalysts for large-scale industrial applications. Leveraging automation and advanced computational techniques, including machine learning, efficient biocatalysts can be generated in short timeframes. Toward this goal, Excelzyme systematically selects suitable protein scaffolds as the foundation for constructing complex enzyme libraries, thereby enhancing sequence and structural biocatalyst diversity. Here, we describe applied workflows and technologies as well as an industrial case study that exemplifies the successful application of the workflow.

Advancements and challenges of digital twins in industry.

Digital twins, which are considered an effective approach to realize the fusion between virtual and physical spaces, have attracted a substantial amount of attention in the past decade. With their rapid development in recent years, digital twins have been applied in various fields, particularly in industry. However, there are still some gaps to be filled and some limitations to be addressed. Here we provide a brief overview of digital twin advancements in industry and highlight the main pitfalls to avoid and challenges to overcome, to improve the maturity of digital twins and facilitate large-scale industrial applications in the future.

In-Situ Cross-linked F- and P-Containing Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Long-Cycling and High-Safety Lithium Metal Batteries with Various Cathode Materials.

The practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) has been hindered by limited cycle-life and safety concerns. To solve these problems, we develop a novel fluorinated phosphate cross-linker for gel polymer electrolyte in high-voltage LMBs, achieving superior electrochemical performance and high safety simultaneously. The fluorinated phosphate cross-linked gel polymer electrolyte (FP-GPE) by in-situ polymerization method not only demonstrates high oxidation stability but also exhibits excellent compatibility with lithium metal anode. LMBs utilizing FP-GPE realize stable cycling even at a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V (vs Li/Li+) with various high-voltage cathode materials. The LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2|FP-GPE|Li battery exhibits an ultralong cycle-life of 1200 cycles with an impressive capacity retention of 80.1%. Furthermore, the FP-GPE-based batteries display excellent electrochemical performance even at practical conditions, such as high cathode mass loading (20.84 mg cm-2), ultrathin Li (20 μm), and a wide temperature range of -25 to 80 ℃. Moreover, the first reported solid-state 18650 cylindrical LMBs have been successfully fabricated and demonstrate exceptional safety under mechanical abuse. Additionally, the industry-level 18650 cylindrical LiMn2O4|FP-GPE|Li4Ti5O12 cells demonstrate a remarkable cycle-life of 1400 cycles. Therefore, the impressive electrochemical performance and high safety in practical batteries demonstrate a substantial potential of well-designed FP-GPE for large-scale industrial applications.

Preparation and thermal properties of zeolite 13X/MgSO4-LiCl binary-salt composite material for sorption heat storage

Thermal energy storage can play a pivotal role in waste heat recovery and solar energy thermal utilization by balancing the time and space-mismatch between supply and demand of energy. Thermochemical sorption heat storage technology has gained the enormous interest for its ability to make use of the low-grade thermal energy. However, the slow sorption reaction kinetics of sorbents remains an obstacle for the large-scale industrial applications of thermochemical sorption heat storage technology. In this study, a new type of zeolite 13X/MgSO4-LiCl composite sorbent material has been fabricated by impregnating zeolite 13X with the mixed solution of MgSO4 and LiCl. The structural characteristics and sorption heat storage performance of composite adsorbents with different mass ratios of MgSO4 and LiCl were studied experimentally by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), full-automatic specific surface area and pore analyzer (ASAP), and thermogravimetry analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC). The results indicate that binary-salt sorbents show the faster sorption kinetics and higher water sorption capacity compared to single salt sorbents. When the mass ratio of MgSO4 and LiCl is 2:1, the zeolite 13X/MgSO4-LiCl composite sorbent (XML-2/1) has the best sorption heat storage performance. Under the sorption temperature of 25 °C and relative humidity (RH) of 60 %, the maximum sorption capacity is 0.24 g/g, and the corresponding heat storage density of 458.3 kJ/kg can be achieved. The results indicate that the zeolite 13X/MgSO4-LiCl composite adsorbent can improve the sorption rate and heat storage density. Compared with pure zeolite 13X and zeolite 13X/MgSO4 composite sorbents, the addition of LiCl can effectively improve the sorption rate and sorption heat storage capacity. The findings of this investigation could promote the growing body of research on the mixed salt (binary-salt or multiple-salt) composite materials and new insights can be offered by broadening the application of zeolite-based composite materials in low-grade thermal energy storage for space heating, which can guide further research and development in this field and ultimately help facilitate the transition toward the clean energy.

Attaining translucency in binder/additive-free, nanograined, tetragonal 1.5 mol.% yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics

In the quest of minimum yttria content to stabilize tetragonal zirconia system, we report the synthesis of ultrafine (∼9 nm), near-spherical, phase-pure tetragonal 1.5 mol.% yttria-stabilized zirconia (1.5YSZ) nanoparticles. The pressureless sintering process (at 1100 °C) involved of 1.5YSZ nanopowders (without any slurry processing) and did not need any binders, additives, or sintering aid to attain high-density (>98.5%) and refined grain size (∼50 nm) for the consolidated fully tetragonal 1.5YSZ nanoceramics. A promising transmittance value of 46% (at 630 nm) was obtained, making it comparable/higher in optical properties with respect to the transmittance values of existing 3 mol.% yttria-doped ZrO2 compositions. This result is credited to our synthesized phase-pure (validated via X-ray Diffraction and Raman analysis) near-spherical nanoparticles with improved tetragonality (c/a ratio = 1.439, obtained via Rietveld analysis) that paved the way for low-temperature conventional sintering for possible large-scale industrial applications.

Study on the Co-combustion characteristics and synergistic effect of semi-coke and dust coal produced from biomass briquette in fluidized bed gasification

Biomass briquette semi-coke (BFSC) is one of the byproducts of biomass gasification. It is difficult to reuse due to its inadequate carbonization, unsatisfactory pore structure, and surface properties. Co-combustion of BFSC with coal-fired boilers can be a cost-effective usage of biomass gasification semi-coke while also improving dust coal's combustion characteristics. However, research on the optimal blending ratio, co-combustion properties, and synergistic effects of BFSC and dust coal is lacking. This study conducted experimental and theoretical research on the co-combustion and reaction kinetic characteristics of BFSC and dust coal with a 0.3 MW pilot experimental system. The findings indicate that during co-combustion, sawdust semi-coke (SC), eucalyptus bark semi-coke (EBC), rice husk semi-coke (RHC), and corn straw semi-coke (CSC) exhibit favorable synergistic effects. At a 25 % blending ratio, the corresponding synergistic parameter indexes (SPIs) were 1.313, 1.053, 1.001, and 1.042. Adding EBC and SC may significantly promote the combustion of dust coal and make it enter the combustion stage sooner, improving combustion stability. When 25 % RHC or CSC is co-combusted, the activation energy predicted by the kinetic control equations is 17 kJ/mol and 5 kJ/mol lower than theoretical values, with a relative error of less than 3 %. The annual EBC output from a 1-ton biomass boiler may replace roughly 706 tons of normal coal, lowering CO2 emissions by approximately 634 tons and producing a direct economic gain of $33300. Therefore, BFSC is a low-carbon and low-cost coal boiler fuel with great potential for large-scale industrial applications.

Zeolite Properties, Methods of Synthesis, and Selected Applications.

Zeolites, a group of minerals with unique properties, have been known for more than 250 years. However, it was the development of methods for hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites and their large-scale industrial applications (oil processing, agriculture, production of detergents and building materials, water treatment processes, etc.) that made them one of the most important materials of the 20th century, with great practical and research significance. The orderly, homogeneous crystalline and porous structure of zeolites, their susceptibility to various modifications, and their useful physicochemical properties contribute to the continuous expansion of their practical applications in both large-volume processes (ion exchange, adsorption, separation of mixture components, catalysis) and specialized ones (sensors). The following review of the knowledge available in the literature on zeolites aims to present the most important information on the properties, synthesis methods, and selected applications of this group of aluminosilicates. Special attention is given to the use of zeolites in agriculture and environmental protection.

Study on Thin Lamination of Carbon Fiber Based on Mechanical Broadening.

Carbon fiber has excellent mechanical properties and plays an important role in modern industry. However, due to the complexity of the carbon fiber widening process, the industrial application of carbon fiber is limited. By designing the carbon fiber widening equipment of automaton, the relationship between the widening width of carbon fiber and the process parameters is studied, and the optimum developing process parameters are obtained, to improve the performance of carbon fiber composites to a certain extent. In this study, the widening process of carbon fiber was studied based on the mechanical broadening method. Firstly, an automatic broadening equipment was designed, and the effects of the initial tension, the number of straight rods, the number of convex rods, and the drawing speed on the widened width during the broadening process were discussed. The widening effect was evaluated by SEM imaging and mechanical testing. At the same time, the factors affecting the broadening width and broadening defects during the broadening process were analyzed, and the optimal broadening process parameters were obtained. The results showed that within a specific range, a higher initial tension, a greater number of convex rods, and an appropriate speed resulted in relatively smaller damage to the broadening of carbon fibers. Through the design of automatic broadening, this experiment explores optimal broadening process parameters, provides a reference for the improvement of the carbon fiber broadening process and further promotes large-scale industrial applications of carbon fiber.

Biochemical characterization, structure-guided mutagenesis, and application of a recombinant D-allulose 3-epimerase from Christensenellaceae bacterium for the biocatalytic production of D-allulose.

D-Allulose has become a promising alternative sweetener due to its unique properties of low caloric content, moderate sweetness, and physiological effects. D-Allulose 3-epimerase (DAEase) is a promising enzyme for D-Allulose production. However, the low catalytic efficiency limited its large-scale industrial applications. To obtain a more effective biocatalyst, a putative DAEase from Christensenellaceae bacterium (CbDAE) was identified and characterized. The recombinant CbDAE exhibited optimum activity at pH 7.5°C and 55°C, retaining more than 60% relative activity from 40°C to 70°C, and the catalytic activity could be significantly increased by Co2+ supplementation. These enzymatic properties of purified CbDAE were compared with other DAEases. CbDAE was also found to possess desirable thermal stability at 55°C with a half-life of 12.4h. CbDAE performed the highest relative activity towards D-allulose and strong affinity for D-fructose but relatively low catalytic efficiency towards D-fructose. Based on the structure-guided design, the best double-mutation variant G36N/W112E was obtained which reached up to 4.21-fold enhancement of catalytic activity compared with wild-type (WT) CbDAE. The catalytic production of G36N/W112E with 500g/L D-fructose was at a medium to a higher level among the DAEases in 3.5h, reducing 40% catalytic reaction time compared to the WT CbDAE. In addition, the G36N/W112E variant was also applied in honey and apple juice for D-allulose conversion. Our research offers an extra biocatalyst for D-allulose production, and the comprehensive report of this enzyme makes it potentially interesting for industrial applications and will aid the development of industrial biocatalysts for D-allulose.

A universal and scalable transformation of bulk metals into single-atom catalysts in ionic liquids

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with maximized metal atom utilization and intriguing properties are of utmost importance for energy conversion and catalysis science. However, the lack of a straightforward and scalable synthesis strategy of SACs on diverse support materials remains the bottleneck for their large-scale industrial applications. Herein, we report a general approach to directly transform bulk metals into single atoms through the precise control of the electrodissolution-electrodeposition kinetics in ionic liquids and demonstrate the successful applicability of up to twenty different monometallic SACs and one multimetallic SAC with five distinct elements. As a case study, the atomically dispersed Pt was electrodeposited onto Ni3N/Ni-Co-graphene oxide heterostructures in varied scales (up to 5 cm × 5 cm) as bifunctional catalysts with the electronic metal-support interaction, which exhibits low overpotentials at 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 30 mV) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER, 263 mV) with a relatively low Pt loading (0.98 wt%). This work provides a simple and practical route for large-scale synthesis of various SACs with favorable catalytic properties on diversified supports using alternative ionic liquids and inspires the methodology on precise synthesis of multimetallic single-atom materials with tunable compositions.
