Implementing protocol-based relaparoscopy for severe complications in laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Although laparoscopy has demonstrated growing applications for either primary colorectal resections or reoperations, no standardized criteria for implementing laparoscopy in revisional surgery have been reported. This study analyzes a single-center series of major complications after laparoscopic colorectal surgery, undergoing laparoscopic (LR), or open reoperations in compliance with a hemodynamics-based institutional management. This study retrospectively analyzes a series of consecutive patients who primarily underwent either laparoscopic left colectomy or low anterior resection in a tertiary referral center between 2016 and 2021. Major complications requiring reoperation (MCR) were managed through an interdisciplinary protocol and submitted to reoperation according to patient hemodynamics and intra-abdominal contamination. A cohort analysis primarily assessed treatment failure rates (i.e., 90-day mortality and need for further surgery), while postoperative morbidity was secondarily examined. Out of 1137 laparoscopic colorectal resections, 497 patients met eligibility criteria, while 45 (9.1%) developed MCRs were managed according to the standardized interdisciplinary protocol. Revisional surgery was performed through either LR (66.7%) or (33.3%). Treatment failure was 13.3% overall, including additional surgery (11.1%) and 90-day mortality (6.6%) after reoperation. In both overall and anastomotic leak-specific MCRs, relaparoscopy resulted in minimized length of hospital stay, postoperative morbidity, and intensity of care. Relaparoscopy for MCR preserves clinical benefits related to minimally invasive colorectal surgery. Further studies should investigate applicative determinants and impediments related to the center volume.

Prospective observational study comparing the perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic colectomy with or without epidural anesthesia: the Kanagawa Yokohama Colorectal Cancer Study Group (KYCC) 1806.

There have been no adequate comparisons of the efficacy, safety, and efficiency of analgesia after laparoscopic colorectal resection (LAC), with and without epidural anesthesia (EDA). This was a multicenter prospective observational study of patients undergoing LAC. The primary end point was the mean visual analog scale (VAS) score on postoperative days (PODs) 1-7. The secondary end points were the highest VAS, complication rate, days to first ambulation and fatigue, length of hospital stay, and time to commencement of surgery. We compared an EDA group (Group E, n = 48) and a no-EDA group (Group O, n = 48) after matching. The mean VAS was not significantly different between the groups (28.7 vs. 30.1, p = 0.288). On assessing the secondary end points, the highest VAS was not significantly different between the groups. In fact, the VAS was lower in Group E only on POD 2. There was no difference in the incidence of complications, the time to first postoperative evacuation was shorter in Group E, and postoperative hospitalization was similar. The time to surgery was shorter in Group O. These results suggest that LAC without EDA is a feasible option, but with the early and regular use of adjunctive measures to provide more stable analgesia.

Comparison of early surgical outcomes of robotic and laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection reported by a busy district general hospital in England

Robotic platforms provide a stable tool with high-definition views and improved ergonomics compared to laparoscopic approaches. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the intra- and short-term postoperative results of oncological resections performed robotically (RCR) and laparoscopically (LCR) at a single centre. Between February 2020 and October 2022, retrospective data on RCR were compared to LCR undertaken during the same period. Parameters compared include total operative time, length of stay (LOS), re-admission rates, 30-day morbidity. 100 RCR and 112 LCR satisfied inclusion criteria. There was no difference between the two group’s demographic and tumour characteristics. Overall, median operative time was shorter in LCR group [200 vs. 247.5 min, p < 0.005], but this advantage was not observed with pelvic and muti-quadrant resections. There was no difference in the rate of conversion [5(5%) vs. 5(4.5%), p > 0.95]. With respect to perioperative outcomes, there was no difference in the overall morbidity, or mortality between RCR and LCR, in particular requirement for blood transfusion [3(3%) vs. 5(4.5%), p 0.72], prolonged ileus [9(9%) vs. 15(13.2%), p 0.38], surgical site infections [5(4%) vs. 5(4.4%), p > 0.95], anastomotic leak [7(7%) vs. 5(4.4%), p 0.55], and re-operation rate [9(9%) vs. 7(6.3%), p 0.6]. RCR had shorter LOS by one night, but this did not reach statistical significance. No difference was observed in completeness of resection but there was a statically significant increase in lymph node harvest in the robotic series. Robotic approach to oncological colorectal resections is safe, with comparable intra- and peri-operative morbidity and mortality to laparoscopic surgery.

Cost-comparison of robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal resections: a mapped systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies.

Robotic colorectal resections (RCR) have been gaining popularity recently due to several advantages in addition to oncological safety. The objective of this review is to evaluate the cost comparison of RCR versus laparoscopic colorectal resections (LCR). All types of comparative studies reporting the cost of RCR versus LCR were retrieved from the search of standard medical electronic databases and analysis was conducted by using the principles of meta-analysis on the statistical software RevMan version 5. The search of medical databases yielded 13 studies (one randomised trial and 12 comparative studies) on 16,082 patients undergoing oncological and non-oncological colorectal resections. Eleven studies reported total cost whereas seven studies reported only operative cost. In the random effects model analysis, LCR was associated with the reduced total cost [standardised mean difference -62.34, 95% confidence interval (CI): -75.14 to -49.54, Z=9.55, P<0.001] as well as reduced operative cost (standardised mean difference -4.60, 95% CI: -5.90 to -3.31, Z=6.96, P<0.001) compared to RCR. However, there was significant heterogeneity [Tau2=346.74, Chi2=29,559.11, df =11 (P<0.001; I2=100%); Tau2=2.73, Chi2=832.21, df =6 (P<0.001; I2=99%)] among included studies. The LCR seems to be more economical as compared to the RCR in terms of operative cost as well as total cost (operative plus in-patient stay). However, due to statistically significant heterogeneity among included studies and paucity of the randomised trials, these findings should be taken cautiously.

Evaluation of Laparoscopic Colorectal Resection Among Elderly Individuals With Colorectal Malignancy: A Single-center Retrospective Analysis.

The purpose of the current study was to statistically clarify the precise risk age in elderly patients undergoing colorectal surgery and to evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic colorectal resection in these patients. Patients' clinical variables were extracted from the database of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Centre, Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, from 2015 to 2019. Logistic regression was conducted to identify independent risk factors of postoperative complications and ORs for each age. Curves of odds ratios (ORs) and CIs for each age were fitted by using a locally weighted scatterplot smoother, and a structural breakpoint was determined by the Chow test to identify a precise cutoff risk age for elderly patients. Comparison and subgroup analysis were conducted between surgical approach groups using the Student ttest and χ2 analysis. Locally weighted scatterplot smoother OR analysis manifested that patients aged 69 years old or older suffered a higher possibility of postoperative complications and should be defined as high-risk age. Comparison according to the high-risk age revealed laparoscopic colorectal surgery is better than laparotomic surgery for elderly individuals in terms of hospital stay (9.46 ± 5.96 vs 15.01 ± 6.34, P< 0.05), the incidence of intensive care unit transfer (4 vs 20, P< 0.05), and incidence of surgical site infection (15 vs 20, P< 0.05). Patients who underwent laparotomic surgery had a greater prevalence of Clavien-Dindo II/III complications (P< 0.05). These findings remained stable even after propensity matching. Furthermore, such superiority was proved especially significant for patients who underwent left-side colorectal resection. In addition, overall survival was improved in the laparoscopic surgery group, whereas no differences were observed in disease-free survival. In our study population, age 69 or older was a cutoff point age suggests a higher possibility of postoperative morbidity after colorectal surgery. Laparoscopic colorectal resection should be regarded as a superior therapeutic choice for these elderly individuals, especially for left-side colorectal surgeries.

Demographic characteristics and short-term outcomes of laparoscopic colon cancer surgeries at a newly developed cancer center in Peshawar, Pakistan

Objective: In Pakistan, colon cancer ranks fourth in incidence, exhibiting survival rates of 90% to 14%, contingent on TNM staging and early detection. This research focuses on the demographic involvement and short-term outcomes of elective colon cancer resections at a newly established tertiary care cancer center utilizing laparoscopic procedures.&#x0D; Method: A retrospective analysis of elective laparoscopic colorectal resections at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Peshawar, from April 2021 to February 2022 was conducted. Out of 157 cases, 79 had colon cancer. Criteria included patients &gt;18 years old with positive biopsies; consent non-providers were excluded. Statistical analysis employed descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations using SPSS-22.&#x0D; Results: The study encompassed biopsy-confirmed colon cancers in patients &gt;18 years. 157 colorectal cases were performed, including 79 colon cancers. The sample comprised 61 males (77.2%) and 18 females (22.7%), mean age 42 years. Most patients (33%) were in the 36-45 age group. Majority were from KPK (69.6%), followed by Afghanistan (24%). Tumors were predominantly in the ascending colon (30.3%). Most were moderately differentiated (70.8%). Mean lymph node yield was 19.0, with 1.2% requiring open laparotomy. Post-discharge, one readmission occurred within 30 days. Mortality within 90 days was 2%, attributed to aspiration pneumonia and chemotherapy-related effects.&#x0D; Conclusions: Elective laparoscopic colonic surgery exhibits safety and efficacy in treating colon cancer. The study provides evidence of minimal morbidity and mortality, low readmission rates, and absence of anastomotic leaks. Hence, elective laparoscopic colonic surgery should be favored due to fewer post-operative complications and superior short-term outcomes. The Impact of a Short Hospital Stay on Readmission Rate after Laparoscopic Colorectal Cancer Surgery under the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Protocol

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the safety of discharge after a one or two day hospital stay following laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery under the enhanced recovery after surgery protocol. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at the colorectal unit in the King Hussein Military Hospital. All patients who underwent laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer between January 2020 and December 2023 were included and grouped according to their hospital stay: Group A had a short stay of one to two days, and Group B a stay of more than two days. Demographic information, type of surgery performed, postoperative complications, and readmission data were collected from the colorectal unit and hakeem data base. Results: Two hundred and eighty patients were included in this study: 104 patients in Group A and 176 patients in Group B. The mean age in Group A was 57.7 ± 12.82 years and in Group B 58.42 ± 13.04 years. In Group A, 46.1% were female, compared to 39.2% in Group B. The mean body mass index was similar in both groups. In Group A, 34.6% of patients were smokers, compared to 29% in Group B. The readmission rate was 9.6% in Group A and 11.4% in Group B. Conclusion: Early discharge of patient within two days following laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection is safe and was not associated with increased rates of readmission.

Minimally invasive surgery for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of robotic versus laparoscopic surgical techniques.

To evaluate outcomes of robotic versus conventional laparoscopic colorectal resections in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Comparative studies of robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal resections in patients with IBD were included. Primary outcome was total post-operative complication rate. Secondary outcomes included operative time, conversion to open surgery, anastomotic leaks, intra-abdominal abscess formation, ileus occurrence, surgical site infection, re-operation, re-admission rate, length of hospital stay, and 30-day mortality. Combined overall effect sizes were calculated using random-effects model and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess risk of bias. Eleven non-randomised studies (n=5,566 patients) divided between those undergoing robotic (n=365) and conventional laparoscopic (n=5,201) surgery were included. Robotic platforms were associated with a significantly lower overall post-operative complication rate compared with laparoscopic surgery (P=0.03).Laparoscopic surgery was associated with a significantly shorter operative time (P=0.00001). No difference was found in conversion rates to open surgery (P=0.15), anastomotic leaks (P=0.84), abscess formation (P=0.21), paralytic ileus (P=0.06), surgical site infections (P=0.78), re-operation (P=0.26), re-admission rate (P=0.48), and 30-day mortality (P=1.00) between the groups.Length of hospital stay was shorter following a robotic sub-total colectomy compared with conventional laparoscopy (P=0.03). Outcomes in the surgical management of IBD are comparable between traditional laparoscopic techniques and robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery demonstrating the safety and feasibility of robotic platforms. Larger studies investigating the use of robotic technology in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis separately may be of benefit with specific focus on important IBD-related metrics.

Efficacy of intraoperative systemic lidocaine on quality of recovery after laparoscopic colorectal surgery: a randomized controlled trial

Introduction Many clinical trials have demonstrated the benefits of intraoperative systemic lidocaine administration in major abdominal surgeries. We tested the hypothesis that systemic lidocaine is associated with an enhanced early quality of recovery in patients following laparoscopic colorectal resection. Patients and Methods We randomly allocated 126 patients scheduled for laparoscopic colorectal surgery in a 1:1 ratio to receive either lidocaine (1.5 mg kg−1 bolus over 10 min, followed by continuous infusion at 2 mg kg−1 h−1 until the end of surgery) or identical volumes and rates of saline. The primary outcome was the Quality of Recovery-15 score assessed 24 h after surgery. Secondary outcomes were areas under the pain numeric rating scale curve over time, 48-h morphine consumption, and adverse events. Results Compared with saline, systemic lidocaine improved the Quality of Recovery-15 score 24 h postoperatively, with a median difference of 4 (95% confidence interval: 1–6; p = 0.015). Similarly, the area under the pain numeric rating scale curve over 48 h at rest and on movement was reduced in the lidocaine group (p = 0.004 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, these differences were not clinically meaningful. Lidocaine infusion reduced the intraoperative remifentanil requirements but not postoperative 48-h morphine consumption (p < 0.001 and p = 0.34, respectively). Additionally, patients receiving lidocaine had a quicker and earlier return of bowel function, as indicated by a shorter time to first flatus (log-rank p < 0.001), yet ambulation time was similar between groups (log-rank test, p = 0.11). Conclusions In patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery, intraoperative systemic lidocaine resulted in statistically but not clinically significant improvements in quality of recovery (see Graphical ). Laparoscopic Portal Vein Ligation and Embolization During First-Stage Hepatectomy for Initially Unresectable Colorectal Liver Metastases.

Two-stage hepatectomy (TSH) is the only treatment for the patients with multiple bilobar colorectal liver metastases (CRMs) who are not candidates for one-step hepatectomy because of insufficient future remnant liver volume and/or impaired liver function.1-5 Although laparoscopic approaches have been introduced for TSH,6-8 the postoperative morbidity and mortality remains high because of the technical difficulties during second-stage hepatectomy.9,10 The authors present a video of laparoscopic TSH with portal vein (PV) ligation and embolization, which minimizes adhesions and PV thrombosis risk in the remnant liver, thereby facilitating second-stage hepatectomy. Three patients with initially unresectable bilateral CRMs received a median of chemotherapy 12 cycles, followed by conversion TSH. After right PV ligation, laproscopic PV embolization was performed by injection of 100% ethanol into the hepatic side of the right PV using a 23-gauge winged needle. After PV embolization, a spray adhesion barrier (AdSpray, Terumo, Tokyo, Japan)11 was applied. During the first stage of hepatectomy, two patients underwent simultaneous laparoscopic colorectal resection (left hemicolectomy and high anterior resection). In the initial hepatectomy, two patients underwent two limited hepatectomies each, and one patient underwent six hepatectomies in the left lobe. After hepatectomy, all the patients underwent right PV embolization. During the second stage, two patients underwent open extended right hepatectomy (right adrenalectomy was performed because of adrenal invasion in one patient), and one patient underwent laparoscopic extended right hepatectomy. No postoperative complications occurred in the six surgeries. Laparoscopic TSH with PV embolization is recommended for safe completion of the second hepatectomy.

Lessons following implementation of a colorectal enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol in a rural hospital setting.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs have become increasingly popular in the management of patients undergoing colorectal resection. However, the validity of ERAS in rural hospital settings without intensive care facilities has not been primarily evaluated. This study aimed to assess an ERAS protocol in a rural surgical department based in Invercargill New Zealand. Ten years of prospectively collected data were analysed retrospectively from an ERAS database of all patients undergoing open, converted, or laparoscopic colorectal resections. Data were collected between two time periods: before the implementation of an ERAS protocol, from January 2011 to December 2013; as well as after the implementation of an ERAS protocol, from January 2014 to December 2020. The primary outcome measures were hospital length of stay (LOS) and LOS in the critical care unit (LOS-CCU). Secondary outcomes were compliance with ERAS protocol, mortality, readmission, and reoperation rates. A total of 118 and 558 colorectal resections were performed in the pre-ERAS and ERAS groups respectively. A statistically significant reduction in hospital LOS was achieved from a median of 8 to 7 days (P = 0.038) when comparing pre-ERAS to ERAS groups respectively. Furthermore, a significant reduction in re-operation rates was observed (7.6% vs. 3% in the ERAS group, P = 0.033) which was seen without a rise in readmission rates (13.6% vs. 13.6% in the ERAS group). The implementation of ERAS in a rural surgical setting is feasible, and these initial findings suggest ERAS adds value in optimizing the colorectal patient's surgical journey.

Short-term outcomes after laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery in patients over 90 years old: a Japanese multicenter study.

The effect of laparoscopic surgery on short-term outcomes in colorectal cancer patients over 90 years old has remained unclear. We reviewed 87 colorectal cancer patients aged over 90 years who underwent surgery between 2016 and 2022. Patients were divided into an open surgery group (n = 22) and a laparoscopic surgery group (n = 65). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of laparoscopic surgery on postoperative outcome in elderly colorectal cancer patients, as compared to open surgery. Seventy-eight patients (89.7%) had comorbidities. Frequency of advanced T stage was lower with laparoscopic surgery (p = 0.021). Operation time was longer (open surgery 146min vs. laparoscopic surgery 203min; p = 0.002) and blood loss was less (105 mL vs. 20 mL, respectively; p < 0.001) with laparoscopic surgery. Length of hospitalization was longer with open surgery (22 days vs. 18 days, respectively; p = 0.007). Frequency of infectious complications was lower with laparoscopic surgery (18.5%) than with open surgery (45.5%; p = 0.021). Multivariate analysis revealed open surgery (p = 0.026; odds ratio, 3.535; 95% confidence interval, 1.159-10.781) as an independent predictor of postoperative infectious complications. Laparoscopic colorectal resection for patients over 90 years old is a useful procedure that reduces postoperative infectious complications.

Laparoscopic Colectomy Via Distance Mentoring: A Model to Develop Laparoscopic Surgery in Developing Caribbean Nations

Although laparoscopic colectomy is the standard of care for colorectal carcinoma, the skill sets to complete colectomy laparoscopically is not universally available in developing nations such as those in the Caribbean. We encountered this situation in Jamaica, where with limited experience in laparoscopic colorectal resections completed a laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy via remote mentoring. This may be, in select cases, a method to increase the availability of laparoscopic colorectal operations in developing countries.

[Prospects of qualitative and quantitative assessment of bowel perfusion by fluorescent angiography with indocyanine green in colorectal surgery. First experience].

To assess the possibilities of fluorescent detection system in qualitative and quantitative assessment of bowel perfusion in colorectal resections. From May to August 2023, a single-center pilot cross-sectional unblinded study with inclusion of 18 patients with colon cancer (of left-sided - 12, of right-sided - 6, mean age - 72.9 years, m/w - 61/39%) was conducted. All patients underwent laparoscopic colorectal resections with extracorporeal stage of bowel transection. The evaluation of the bowel's ICG perfusion was conducted to assist in decision making about the level of its resection. Qualitative (visual) assessment was carried out in all 18 patients, in one patient twice, quantitative assessment of perfusion was conducted in 8 patients (left-sided resections - 6, right-sided hemicolectomy - 2). The qualitative evaluation was performed in real time on the analysis of the color gradient. The time parameters and fluorescence intensity at different level proximally and distally from the resection line were quantitatively estimated: Tstart - time of occurrence of minimal fluorescence in the areas of interest after the ICG injection (sec); Tmax - time to achieve maximum fluorescence intensity after the ICG injection (sec); Tmax-start - time interval between Tstart and Tmax, Imax - level of maximum fluorescence intensity (I). Visual qualitative analysis of fluorescence revealed unsatisfactory perfusion characteristics (black, dark-gray color) in the area planned by the surgeon to anastomose the bowel in 3 of 18 patients (16.6%). When analyzing the quantitative data of this group of patients, there was a 2-6-fold decrease in Imax level, and one patient had an increase in Tmax-start at the level of intended resection compared to the bowel's sections in the favorable zone. In all cases, the final bowel transection was conducted in the area of good perfusion. There was no clinical evidence of anastomotic dehiscence in the study group. Intraoperative evaluation of bowel perfusion is an important component of safe anastomosis formation in colorectal surgery. The use of ICG-FA allows to conduct qualitative and quantitative assessment of tissue perfusion of the bowel in order to assist in making intraoperative decisions. Quantitative evaluation of fluorescence provides more objective information about perfusion parameters. Imax and Tmax-start are the most promising quantitative indicators of local bowel's perfusion. Nevertheless, the precise interpretation of the quantitative indicators of ICG perfusion needs to be clarified.

Three-dimensional laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer: A 2-year follow-up study at Hue Central Hospital

BackgroundLaparoscopic surgery has brought about a revolution in clinical practice since its inception. Using a new generation three-dimensional (3D) HD laparoscopic system can be seen as a beneficial “hybrid” created by fusing two different elements: increased vision quality and the viability and diffusion of laparoscopy. This study aims to determine the surgical outcomes and two-year survival of colorectal cancer patients after 3D laparoscopic surgery. MethodsA prospective study was conducted on 60 patients with a definitive diagnosis of primary colorectal cancer. All patients underwent 3D laparoscopic colorectal resection from January 2020 to December 2021 by a single surgical team. Data were prospectively collected from Hue Central Hospital, including operative parameters and survival time. ResultsThe mean age was 62.0 ± 10.6 years old. D3 lymphadenectomy accounted for most cases (96.7 %). There were no intraoperative complications or conversion to open surgery. The mean operation time was 162.3 ± 25.8 min. Postoperative complications included incisional fluid collection (5 %), wound infection (3.3 %), and drainage site bleeding (1.7 %). The average length of hospital stay was 10.4 ± 4.6 days. Overall survival rate after two years was 93 %. Conclusions3D laparoscopic surgery for radical treatment of colorectal cancer is feasible, effective, and safe. This surgical technique offers a positive prognosis for patients.

Preventive strategies are very important to working on this problem. In a multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) published in Annals of Surgery(2016;263:1085-1091), we reported the efficacy of oral antimicrobial prophylaxis in preventing SSI before colorectal surgery. Since the end of the RCT in 2012, we have applied this prophylaxis in our clinical practice and have experienced a large number of cases. Here, we report the incidence of SSIs when this prophylactic measure is applied in real-world clinical practice. Methods We retrospectively evaluated the incidence of SSI in 1192 patients who underwent elective laparoscopic colorectal resection for colorectal tumors between January 2013 and June 2022. We excluded 24 patients who were unable to receive oral prophylaxis. Antimicrobial prophylaxis consisted of oral kanamycin (1 g) and metronidazole (750 mg) twice on the day before surgery and intravenous cefmetazole (1 g) just before and every 3 hours during surgery. The diagnosis of SSI follows the CDC/NHSN definition. Results Our study included 647 males and 545 females, with a mean age of 69.3 years (IQR 63-77) and BMI of 22.6 kg/m2 (IQR 20.2-24.7). The incidence of SSI in all surgical cases was 61/1192 (5.1%; 95% CI 4.0-6.5). The incidence of SSIs in colon surgery was 16/769 (2.1%; 95% CI 1.3-3.4), and in rectal surgery, 45/400 (11.3%; 95% CI 8.5-14.7). The incidence of Clostridioides difficile colitis, which is regarded as a side effect of oral antimicrobial agents, was low at 6/1192 cases (0.5%; 05%CI 0.2-1.1). In our previous RCT, the incidence of SSI was 21/289 (7.26%) in patients treated with oral antibiotics. In a subanalysis of this trial published in the International Journal of Colorectal Disease(2016;31:1775-1784), the incidence of SSI was 9/188 (4.8%) in colon surgery and 13/103 (13%) in rectal surgery. The incidence of SSIs in the present data was similar to or lower than the incidence of SSIs in well-conditioned patients selected in the RCT. Conclusion Our results suggest that preoperative oral antibiotic prophylaxis in colorectal surgery is an effective method to reduce SSIs in a wide variety of patients in real-world clinical practice.
